Program Notes

The Alec Wilder Sonata is one of most musically and technically challenging pieces in the repertoire of the bass trombone. It is made up of five distinctly contrasting movements. These movements in many ways describe several different directions of American chamber music in the middle of the twentieth century. The composition shows wide usage of chromatic harmony, and the final movement is characterized by what many music scholars call third stream music or music which combines elements of the western classical tradition with the more modern elements of jazz.

The famous piano virtuoso and composer of the nineteenth century, Franz Liszt, used the chorale melody “Heilig ist Gott der Vater” as the basis for his composition “Hosannah." In this performance, the chorale melody “Heilig ist Gott der Vater” is used as a prelude to Franz Liszt’s “Hosannah.”

The composition “Hosannah” for bass trombone and organ was originally performed in a setting of a worship service. This is the only known work by Liszt that was written specifically for this instrumentation.

Henri Tomasi composed “Etre Ou Ne Pas Etre” in 1957 for the trombone quartet of the National French Orchestra. It is based directly on Hamlet’s “To be or not to be” soliloquy from William Shakespeare's Hamlet. The listener will notice the torment of Hamlet in the voice of the solo bass trombone. The three accompanying trombones symbolize Hamlet’s painful environment, including the pain brought onto Hamlet by the ghost of his father. At the end of the musical soliloquy, the listener might also notice the bass trombonist almost pronouncing the words “To be or not to be.”

“Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen” is the first of Gustav Mahler’s three song cycles for voice and orchestra. Although it was composed as a vocal piece, it is today also commonly performed on the bass trombone and has become part of the bass trombonist’s major repertoire. It is performed today perhaps as much by instrumentalists as it is by vocalists.

The text of this song cycle describes the torment and lament of a lost love. This composition describes both the pain that the wayfarer now feels without his love and his former joy. I have included a copy of the text.

Clay Smith was originally a cornet prodigy who later added playing trombone and saxophone to his list of instruments. His career spanned the period of the great American concert bands of John Phillip Sousa, Herbert Clarke, and Arthur Pryor. This piece is very much composed in that late 19th century virtuoso soloist-with-band idiom.

The edition of Fancy Free that will be performed today was arranged by Blair Bollinger, a noted soloist and bass trombonist of the Philadelphia Philharmonic Orchestra. Many octaves have been changed, and an extended cadenza has been included to showcase the bass trombone rather than the tenor trombone for which the piece was originally composed.

Program Notes

Katamiya is dedicated to the winners of the “International Percussion Competition Luxembourg” 1995: Momoko Kamiya and Katarzyna Mycka. It is a lyrical and melodic theme on an ever-pulsating rhythm. “I think that any piece of music, whether popular or modern contemporary, features a kind of “groove to be found and/or reinvented by the performer” - Emmanuel Sejourne.

Illuminations was written in 1976 to fulfill a request for a work to demonstrate the melodious, sonorous quality of the trombone in a new color combination. The result is a lush, neo-romantic duet where the slow movement’s long, chromatic melodies are balanced by the baroque-like faster sections. Technically, Illuminations is not difficult, but is challenging musically. Adherence to dynamics and balance in parts, sustaining the long lines, shaping notes, and the impact of the performers’ personalities will make the work successful. The title is a double entrendre. It refers to a certain esthetic and even metaphysical nature inherent in the music itself - a certain luminescence of meaning in an impressionistic sense. It also is meant to indicate and elicit a certain type of sound- the music should glow, gleam, and glitter with an internal, as well as exterior, radiance.
