National Symbol

The silver fern is becoming increasingly recognised overseas as the national symbol of New Zealand.

It was originally adopted by the New Zealand Native Rugby Team which visited England in 1888 and has since formed part of the uniform (or badge) of successive representative sporting teams. From the early 1900s, the fern leaf has been used as a trademark for meat and dairy exports. On 18 May 1908 to mark the attainment of Dominion status, the Secretary of State for Colonies approved the New Zealand Government's proposal to substitute a wreath of fern leaves for the laurel wreath on the Governor's Ensign. This usage also continued until about 1935.

The fern leaf has been used as a distinguishing badge for New Zealand military formations, particularly during the Second World War, and was also used to mark the graves of New Zealand servicemen in overseas countries. In the most recent revision (1963) of the New Zealand Coat of Arms, two fern leaves provide a base for the supporters to stand upon.

There is no question that the Silver Fern is the most recognised symbol of New Zealand. For over a century, the Silver Fern has been the emblem of our sports men and women. The Silver Fern is used extensively as a symbol by Government, tourism, trade organisations and commercial brands.

The Silver Fern says "New Zealand".

We can organize any branding if required. For further information, see the Services Page – “Branding” from the Home page on this site or email [email protected].

WAKA HUIA

The Waka Huia (Feather Box) was the treasure box of a chief or a family group.

Waka Huia were originally used for holding ceremonial items or valued treasures and the long tail feathers of the Huia bird. The tail feathers were used to adorn the hair of Maori chiefs - hence this is where the name is derived from.

Combs for the hair, tiki, greenstone and bone ornaments, valued feathers and other small treasures were all retained in the papahou under a very special tapu. The box was suspended from a rafter of a chief's sleeping hut or kept in one of those small whatu rangi upheld by a single pole of considerable length.

MANUKA PORCELAIN DIPPING BOWLS

Commonly known as "Tea Tree". Found abundantly throughout both the North and South Islands, Manuka is probably the commonest and best known of all New Zealand plants. In flower, Manuka is a most beautiful plant and a stand of the flowering shrub clothing a hillside looks from a distance like snow. The flowers, when freshly opened, are full of nectar and much sought after by the honey-bee.

"In partaking of this rich, dark honey, you are entering into the healing world of Tane - mysterious, regenerative and infinitely powerful". Tane Mahuta is the god of the New Zealand forest and the Manuka plays an important role in his domain, and is his special child.

The plant is treasured by the Maori people and has traditionally been used to treat a wide variety of ailments.

CERAMIC WALL ART – NIKAU

The Nikau (Maori: nīkau; Rhopalostylis sapida) is a palm tree endemic to New Zealand, and the only palm native to New Zealand.

Nïkau palms have always had importance in Maori life. The leaves were used to thatch houses, to wrap food before cooking, and to weave into hats, mats, baskets, and leggings for travelling through undergrowth.

CERAMIC WALL ART – KORU

In Maori design, the Koru has a dual meaning. It is commonly used in Maori art as a symbol of creation. It is also said to represent new life and in business, new beginnings and the strengthening of existing relationships.

Literally speaking, the baby fern frond slowly unwinds over its adolescent life as it grows into a mature frond. It then opens into a brand-new leaf on the silver fern plant where it ages and then dies. This is the fern fronds life cycle.

OAMARU STONE KORU SCULPTURE

This Oamaru Stone sculpture is carved in one of the traditional Koru designs representing the coiled spring of the emerging fern leaf, symbolising new life, new growth and new beginnings.

Oamaru Stone is known to Geologists as Totara Limestone and was formed some 35 - 40 million years ago. Over millions of years, the soft sediment became lithified (hardened into rock) and was eventually lifted above sea level.
