What is a Stray Dog?
• A dog that lives on the street• That looks for food• A dog that is normally untidy and
dirty• Not domestic• Some are once loved• Begs for food• Usually puppies don’t survive
Why are there so many stray dogs?
•Dogs kicked out of homes•Wild dogs•Multiply - people can’t sterilize all stray dogs•Used to Moscow’s environment•Very skilled• A lot of trash-food
Problems Arising From Stray Dogs
Dangerous diseases More and more bites and attacks 70 bites per day 20,000 people bitten last year Mostly bitten in parks Streets of Moscow dirty 81 stray dogs per 8 square miles
Solutions from Management of Stray Dogs
city budget was $30,000,000 to build 15 shelters last year – not enough
thousands of strays rounded up every year some private shelters-ok, conditions in
some government shelters – bad environment police trying hard to get dogs
off streets after many attacks strays caught and killed sometimes
dogs removed, others come
many rats if dogs removed
made policy on counting, catching, sterilizing – last year
strays put in pounds – small effect
“It’s not really easy to completely move the dogs off the streets, I guess we just have to… learn how to live with them.” - Alexei Vereshchagin
B.I.M.
As a field trip we visited a shelter called B.I.M. There we were able to see how bad conditions were for some strays before they were rescued. After going to B.I.M., we realized that people need to help minimize the population of strays. Some shelters, unlike B.I.M., don’t help strays in need, and conditions are terrible. Stray dogs in Moscow is a huge problem that needs attention.
Stray dogs right near the elementary field
Below you will find a letter we sent to B.I.M. after our visit
March 26, 2010Dear Sir,
Thank you for letting us visit your shelter. The shelter is very clean and tidy. It doesn’t really smell a lot which is good. We think all the dogs were in good condition. It’s good that all dogs are sterilized. It’s very good that you let the dogs walk outside even though the space was not that big.
You gave us a lot of helpful information that we will use during our exhibition. Most of the dogs were nice and friendly. If we could have an opportunity to come back we would love to.
Sincerely, Julia, Marlene,
and Rebecca
Action Plan
Our action plan was to make a fictional diary of a stray dog to share the information we have learned and to raise awareness of the problem of strays in Moscow.
The main character in the diary is a dog named Maxim. In the story Maxim is the one who is “writing” the diary. It talks about his everyday life. During the diary he meets a couple friends (stray dogs). After we wrote the book we made our very own illustrations.
Steps We Have Taken
1st grade assembly- We read Diary of a Stray Dog at the first grade
assembly. The first graders had a lot of questions and were very interested in what we had to say.
2nd and 3rd grade assembly-We also read the Diary of a Stray Dog at the 2nd and 3rd
grade assembly. We had a huge impact on them and someone even wrote a poem about it and another student continued the dog diary in his personal writing journal. One other student even wanted to purchase a copy of the book.
Steps We Will Take
After exhibition is over we will continue to work on publishing the book. We will create book order forms for:
personal student orders each elementary classroom the library
The company we are using to publish our book is called Nationwide Learning.
The cost to pre-order the book will be $15. 95 to cover the cost of publishing and shipping.
