This is my final CEO message before signing off at PBS Hawai‘i after the best 14 years of a Hawai‘i multimedia career spanning 48 years. I have the privilege of welcoming the new leader chosen by our Board of Directors after a national search.

And he’s none other than the man who sat beside me for literally thousands of hours, anchoring news coverage on KHON2.

Ron Mizutani is set to begin his tenure here next month, after serving as President and CEO of the Hawaii Food Bank for nearly three years. He is credited with adding operational efficiencies, building capacity and increasing revenues. He has thrown himself into the job of feeding hungry people during this pandemic.

Ron, a graduate of Kamehameha Schools and UH Mānoa, spent 33 years at KHON2, first in the sports department and later in the newsroom, winning multiple journalism awards. He gained corporate and strategic planning experience in stints as a top communications executive at Hawaiian Telcom and Communications Pacific.

“We value Ron’s Hawai‘i sensibilities, experience and his global perspectives,” said PBS Hawai‘i Board Chair Joanne Lo Grimes.

Says Ron: “I truly believe it is our responsibility to make a difference in people’s lives, open minds and strengthen our diverse communities.”

I know that he will hit the ground running, because I’ve seen the way he works.

As an example and a metaphor, not all news anchors enjoy field reporting, but it was the best part of the work day for both of us. It was important to us to get out and get to know the people, places and processes of the Islands.

Remember Hawai‘i’s torrential 40 days and 40 nights of rain in the spring of 2006? Ron and I were on the road almost every day covering the community impacts of the rainfall. We would return to the newsroom, looking bedraggled and facing tight deadlines for our video reports, while needing to prepare to anchor our own evening newscast. We often joked that in the few extra minutes we could muster, we had to choose whether to apply facial powder, dry our hair, eat something after having missed lunch, or use the restroom. (The bladder usually won this contest.)

I saw almost every day that Ron was driven by public service, the accuracy and value of information, the quality of storytelling and love for Hawai‘i. He’ll bring these priorities to a strong like-minded team.

A warm welcome, Ron. Home is here.

January 2021 marks the 50th anniversary of MASTERPIECE, the iconic PBS drama series that sparked America’s infatuation with British television. Renowned for consistently high-quality productions, MASTERPIECE has amassed an impressive 83 Primetime Emmys, 18 Peabody Awards and seven Golden Globes. Mega hits such as Upstairs Downstairs, Sherlock and Downton Abbey found pop culture status. But it’s the literary classics such as

Bleak House and The Forsyte Saga, as well as detective-led mysteries like Foyle’s War, Inspector Morse and Grantchester that have consistently drawn an audience of millions each week to the series.

To celebrate five decades of award-winning television, MASTERPIECE premieres four new unforgettable dramas this month that viewers won’t want to miss.

HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE MASTERSTuesday, January 26 at 7:30 pm

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS JANUARY 2021

Larry Kimura

Sarah Keahi

Puakea Nogelmeier

Amy Kalili

The Hawaiian language nearly went extinct following the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy. For decades it was mostly spoken in homes by kūpuna. In the 1960s and 70s, the Hawaiian Renaissance movement helped save the native tongue from disappearing. This month on Long Story Short with Leslie Wilcox, we hear from four people who have dedicated their lives to perpetuating the Hawaiian language.

Educator Larry Kimura grew up in Waimea on Hawai‘i Island listening to his grandmother and her friends speak Hawaiian. His interest grew further after he took a class at Kamehameha Schools, and from there, it flourished. “I just knew this is what my passion is, and this is what I’m gonna be working in, whatever it’s gonna be called,” said Kimura.

Hawaii Kai’s Sarah Keahi was the only Hawaiian Language teacher at Kamehameha Schools when she started working there in 1966. Her interest in ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i was also sparked by the older generation. “My grandmother spoke Hawaiian with my mom sometimes and I was fascinated,” Keahi said.

Born and raised in Minnesota, Puakea Nogelmeier, PhD moved to West O‘ahu in 1970 and was invited to join a hālau shortly thereafter. He says he would memorize hula chants, but realized he needed to better understand them. “Why would I engage if I’m not trying to learn what this is about? So then I started to try and learn Hawaiian language,” said Nogelmeier.

Amy Kalili of Kailua, Windward O‘ahu, hosted the first Hawaiian language segment on a local morning news program. While that was groundbreaking, Kalili says there’s more ground to be broken: “Having content that covers that gamut – from news, drama, comedy, documentaries – having all of these things being done in the Hawaiian language, from a Hawaiian perspective, I don’t see any reason why we can’t get there.”
