Dear Neil: When should I apply pre-emergent weedkill-ers in the fall and spring?
The fall application should be made the fi rst week of September. Use a Gallery product for broadleafed weeds and Balan, Betasan, Team or Dimension for grassy weeds. You’ll want two applications in spring and summer. Both spring treatments should be of the products for grassy weeds. The fi rst should come in very early March, and the other should be 90 days later, in early June.
Dear Neil: We have sown
wildfl ower seeds in our old vegetable garden plot for the past several years. This year we’ve had two plants with a strange growth form (sample of clasping cone-fl ower and photo of Indian blanket enclosed). What is it? These plants were about 5 feet apart.
It’s purely coincidental that you had two plants with this same growth ab-normality. It is known bo-tanically as “fasciation,” and it happens when tissues di-vide in two planes but not the third. The most familiar example is with celosia, in which case we call the plant “cockscomb,” but you’ll also see it with Texas mountain laurel, euonymus and many species of succulent plants, especially in the euphorbia family, also cacti. It will not spread from plant to plant, nor does it pose any danger to affected plants. If you fi nd it and do not care for its look, merely trim it out.
Dear Neil: We have large
live oaks in our yard. They are dropping many leaves. There is new growth, but the lawn is littered. Is this a con-cern?
Probably not. As long as you are seeing good new growth, your trees are healthy. You’re seeing a re-action to the hot, dry weath-er this summer. Many of our shade trees are doing the very same thing. Use a soaker hose to water them deeply.
Dear Neil: I used Round-
Up to kill poison ivy growing between two parallel fences that are about 2 feet apart. It’s been dead for several weeks. Can I safely dispose of all the vines without wor-rying about getting a rash? Someone told me I needed to wait three months. Is that true?
It’s the oil in poison ivy tis-sues that causes the allergic reactions. It’s in all parts of the plants, so you can never really assume you’re in the clear. However, given those several months, the oils volatize as the tissues dry. If you can reach the area with a hoe, that would be the best way to get rid of the stubble. Do not use a line trimmer, as it would spew the dust all over you. Wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt and gloves, and take a hot, soapy shower as soon as you’re fi n-ished.
Dear Neil: We have a large Asian jasmine bed that is completely brown de-
spite regular watering. We sprayed it with a fungicide, but that didn’t help. What causes this?
I have grown Asian jas-mine for more than 45 years, and I’ve observed it daily for almost all of that time, and I’ve never seen any insect or disease on it. What I have seen many times is drought damage. People think they have watered it properly, but they fail to recognize the slight change in color it shows when it’s dry. It turns a dull metallic green shade and the leaves fold down-ward ever so gently. Once those symptoms show up, you have only a few days to water it before the dam-
age will be permanent. That would be my best guess.
Dear Neil: We have plant-
ed mandevillas for several years. They have always entwined our trellises, and we’ve enjoyed their outra-geous blooms all summer. This year we purchased fresh mandevilla plants and set them, large pots and all, into the ground beside the trellises. They have bloomed beautifully, but they contin-ue to fail to climb. What is the cause?
The most likely reason would be that you may have gotten one of the selections that is more shrubby. The stems themselves will tell
the tale. If they twine around one another, you have the standard type, but if they’re straight and seem uninter-ested in wrapping, you don’t have the same type you had in prior years. Next time, buy plants that are growing on stakes so you’ll know.
Dear Neil: I bought a 10-
foot weeping willow late last summer. It was doing well until mid-summer when I noticed a lot of yellowing and leaf drop. I’ve been wa-tering it twice a week. Is that too much? What type of fer-tilizer should I be using?
This isn’t about fertilizer, and, it’s not about over-wa-tering, either. Willows can
grow in standing wateralong a lakeshore. This iseither transplant shock, oryou may have let the treeget too dry for a short periodof time (once is all it takes).Weeping willows’ life expec-tancy in Texas landscapesis somewhere between fourand eight years. Yours maybe reducing that average.

For people with diabetes, maintaining healthy blood glucose levels is a matter of life and death. One way for people to better control their glucose levels is to eat healthful meals and snacks at regular times each day.
To help local residents learn how to plan and pre-pare meals that can be en-joyed by people with and without diabetes, Texas AgriLife Extension is plan-ning a four-part series of cooking classes called Cook-ing Well with Diabetes. The classes will be held from 6-8 p.m. Sept. 2 and through Sept. 9, 16 and Oct. 7. Cost for the 4 week series is $20 per person or $30 per cou-ple. Space is limited, so pre-registration is a must. The Extension offi ce is located at 206 S. State St. in Decatur.
The series will include cooking demonstrations as well as discussions of re-search fi ndings on diabetes. For in-stance, recent re-search has shown that people with di-abetes can enjoy a wide range of foods including sugars – in moderation. Years ago, the term “sugar diabetes” was in common us-age because it was thought that eating too much sugar causes dia-betes. Research has shown that moderate consumption of sugars and fats can still be part of a healthy diet for people with diabetes, as long as they keep their blood glu-cose at healthy levels.
Carbohydrates are found in grains, pasta, cereals, dairy products and vegeta-bles, particularly starchy vegetables such as beans,
corn, peas, potatoes and winter squash. Protein foods such as meat, fi sh and poul-
try do not contain carbohydrates, un-less other ingredi-ents such as bread-ing are added to those dishes. Many c a r b o h y d r a t e foods also contain fi ber, which can help reduce blood cholesterol and blood glucose lev-els. Carbohydrate foods that contain
high levels of dietary fi ber include whole grains, fruits and vegetables.
Because the body quickly absorbs the glucose from sugary and high-starch foods, eating large amounts of them can cause blood sugar levels to skyrocket. Instead of abstaining from sugars and starches alto-gether, they should consume a balance of different kinds of carbohydrates, such as more whole grains, non-starchy vegetables and whole fruits, and less starchy and sugary foods.
To reserve your spot for the Cooking Well with Dia-betes series, contact the Wise County Extension of-fi ce at (940) 627-3341.

Most of us have dreams and goals that we once thought were keys to our happiness, but that, for whatever reasons, we just never quite achieved.
This doesn’t necessarily mean we’re not happy with our lives, but we still may feel frustrated or disap-pointed about those unful-fi lled dreams.
While there’s no magic way to make all your dreams come true, you can take ac-tion to get closer to your life’s goals and to lessen those feelings of frustration.
A starting point is to put the past behind you. Hold-ing on to unresolved anger
and old resentments uses up energy and accomplishes nothing. Forget past hurts or abandonments and in-stead begin managing your daily life so that it refl ects who you are and what you value.
It also helps to be realistic in evaluating your goals. In romance, for example, there is no “ideal” relationship or “perfect” mate. But there can be someone who can accept and care about the real you, and who is able to get things right more often than wrong. Similarly, there is no perfect job, but there are work situations that can challenge you and provide a real sense of accomplish-ment.
Knowing yourself is vi-tal to feeling more fulfi lled.
What are your personal strengths and interests? Once identifi ed, put time and energy into nourishing them. Rather than trying to be someone you’re not, en-hance who you already are. Whatever you do well, do it frequently and proudly and you’ll fi nd that rewards will follow.
If you want to achieve spe-cifi c goals, it’s vital to take action toward them, rather than simply dreaming about them and waiting for things to happen. Even small steps in the right direction make a difference. Maybe it’s a fi rst phone call, rewriting your
resume, or taking a class. While we usually know the end result we want, we often fail to take the fi rst step to get to it.
You also want balance in your life. Saying “no” to ex-cessive demands on your time, talent or goodwill will allow you time for the things you really want to do with-out the resentment and an-ger that comes from agree-ing to things you really don’t want to do.
Reaching your life’s goals means that you stop letting old beliefs and other’s ideas defi ne who you are and what you have to do. Instead, ac-
cept that you, and only you, can take action to reach the dreams and goals that re-ally matter to you.

EAR INFECTIONS
The ear is made up of three parts—
the outer, middle, and inner ear. The
middle and outer ear must be at the
same pressure. This is because the
Eustachian tube, a small passage that
connects the middle ear to the back
of the throat, allows air to reach the
middle ear and equalize pressure
there. When a child has a cold or al-
lergy affecting the nasal passages, the
Eustachian tube may become blocked.
This blockage may allow fl uid to build
up within the normally air-fi lled middle
ear. Bacteria or viruses that enter the
middle ear in this way can get trapped.
These germs can breed in the trapped
fl uid, eventually leading to an ear in-
fection.
Ear aches, though a common illness,
can nonetheless be painful for your
child. If you have any questions, please

By LUKE CLAYTON
Sunrise was still a promise in the eastern sky. A thin vale of silvery clouds appeared over the Palo Pinto Mountains as Guide John Bryan eased his boat into the gently fl ow-ing waters of the Brazos River, adjacent the Holt River Ranch near Graford.
Our mutual friend, Bob Hood, had joined us for a couple hours of early morn-ing bass fi shing. Our trip co-incided perfectly with the fi rst cool front this part of the state had seen in months. The tem-perature was near 70 degrees, down right cold weather for August in Texas! As we motored to our fi rst fi sh-ing hotspot, a slight mist made it even cooler. We were hoping the cloud cover and cooling temperatures had put the bass, already on a dependable bite, on a big time feed.
Bryan and his clients had been en-joying good bass fi shing during early morning – the previous trip produced a 4.5 pounder, which might not raise too many eyebrows among bass chasers on reservoirs stacked with Florida strain bass, but for native Texas black bass, especially those caught in rivers such
as the Brazos, fi sh over 4 pounds don’t come on every cast.
“We’ve been keying on gravel and rocks along shore, crevices in the larger rock formations and of course, lay down
logs and trees that have fall-en into the river,” Bryan said as we begin working Senkos, Texas rigged worms and shal-low diving crank baits around some shallow rock situated in close proximity to water 12 feet deep.
“During the evening hours and just after sunup, bass pull into water as shallow as a foot deep to feed on river minnows and crawfi sh. They especially
like areas close to deeper water – like we’re fi shing here,” he said.
His instructions ended in mid sen-tence, a chunky little 1.5 pounder had hammered his orange colored Senko and was heading for the Possum Kingdom Dam with it! Hood and I also pulled sev-eral feisty bass, bream and even a couple of white bass from around the struc-ture. Some of the better fi shing came a bit later in the morning around the cut banks where crawfi sh mounds were vis-ible along the river bank. Unlike bass in larger impoundments, river bass feed heavily on crawfi sh and locating areas
with soft muddy banks and a profusion of crawfi sh mounds is a good way to fi nd concentrations of actively feeding fi sh.
On to the dovesAfter a couple hours of bass fi shing,
we decided to head to the upper reaches of the ranch and conduct an impromptu dove survey. The Holt River Ranch con-sists of around 5,000 acres, including 700 acres of prime dove habitat that in-cludes several fi elds with ripe sunfl ow-ers and water in the form of stock tanks. The thick vegetation along the river provides excellent nesting conditions for dove and in late summer and fall, plenti-ful sunfl owers insure they stick around and entice migrating birds to stop and stay a while.
We drove along the perimeter of a cou-ple of the larger fi elds and watched lit-erally hundreds of birds take to the air and settle back down in the cover of the standing sunfl owers to resume feeding.
It’s been said that only foolish hunt-ers predict dove numbers before the season begins but the stage is set here on the Holt River Ranch for an excellent opener. As Bryan said, “The birds have been here all summer and even more poured in after that little cool front came through last week. I expect there will be

In designing his custom home, Robert Evans was very specifi c about his wants and needs.
But his priorities had noth-ing to do with tile or granite colors, or even the carpet or walk-in closets.
Energy effi ciency was his main concern.
“I’m not behind the times, I’m ahead of the times,” Ev-ans said as he stood in his un-landscaped front yard and looked at his almost completed three-bedroom, two-bath home located in the Silver Lakes Ranches sub-di-vision in Sunset. “I’m looking at success.”
As a cross-country driver, Evans will only spend one weekend a month in his new home. But, he can rest as-sured that while he’s gone, his home is operating more effi ciently than the average home.
Evans’ home has achieved Energy Star certifi cation with a Home Energy Raters (HERS) Index of 76. Basi-cally, the index score means that Evans’ home is 24 per-cent more effi cient than a home built to the 2004 In-ternational Residential Code (IRC).
In 2007, 120,000 homes nationwide were built to meet Energy Star qualifi ca-tions, bringing the total up to 840,000 qualifi ed homes.
Some local builders are beginning to pay attention to those guidelines set forth by Energy Star. Along with labeling energy effi cient ap-pliances, lighting, home elec-tronics and other products, homeowners can now get an
Energy Star label applied to their new home. A new home must meet a HERS index of 85 or less, which means the home is 15 percent more ef-fi cient than homes built to the IRC.
Evans hired Bill Donald with Bill Donald Custom Homes based in Bridgeport to construct his home with Evans’ home being the fi rst Energy Star labeled home of Donald’s. He said that Evans’
would pay a $30 electric bill on his house.
“If there was a couple liv-ing here, I predict their bill would run $100 a month,” he said.
Donald became a partner with Energy Star in 2007, but has committed his busi-ness to building effi ciently for 15 years, he said. And now that he’s an Energy Star partner, he looks to exceed Energy Star’s requirement
with every house he builds. “Instead of meeting the
minimum at 85, we’re build-ing at 75 and 70,” he said. “I want to be able to say that I’m twice as good as Energy Star.”
In being ahead of the curve, Donald is preparing for a time when meeting Energy Star standards is mandatory, and not voluntary.
How far he goes depends on the customer, he said, as
there are several variables that add up to energy ef-fi ciency. A big part of mak-ing a house energy effi cient is attempting to make it as air-tight as possible through proper installation of insu-lation, ducts and ventilation systems, windows and doors.
Barry Stone with Barry Stone Custom Homes, based in Wise County, has been a partner with Energy Star since 2006.
“Proper sealing around windows and exterior doors – sealing is very important,”
Stone said. “Those are areas that are going to cause you problems forever. The wall systems are very important. There’s several different ways to seal them – we use a lot of insulation on the out-side to create a thermal blan-ket around the whole house.”
“You have to look at the house like a sealed envelope,” Donald said. “In this area you can’t make it tight enough.”

TESTING, TESTING — To earn an Energy Star label, a home must pass a few tests. Above,

meet Energy Star standards. “Working on air leakage
is a big thing,” he said. “You want to make sure the atmo-sphere outside is not affect-ing the inside of the home.”
That’s exactly what Rob Piasecki, general manager of Build for Comfort, measured on a sultry summer day in Evans’ home. After making sure all windows and doors were closed, Piasecki sealed the backdoor and depressur-ized the house.
“With the blower door, you make sure everything is closed up and then depres-surize the house,” he said. “By doing so, it draws air from the outside. That’s what you measure – how many cu-bic feet per minute leak into the house.”
In testing Evans’ home, Piasecki said that a total air change in the home would oc-cur every fi ve hours.
“Normally, a house chang-es over every hour, hour and a half,” Piasecki said. “It’s one of the better scores I’ve seen on a house this size.”
Piasecki also performed a duct-blaster test, which tests the leakiness of the duct sys-tem.
Tests such as these must be done by a third-party in-spector in order to achieve an Energy Star label.
Piasecki, who is based in Fort Worth, has been testing homes for Energy Star labels for about six years now and says that he has started to see an increase in builders seeking the label.
“It seems like a lot of build-ers are doing it,” he said. “It’s easier to sell the house be-cause your bills will be less. A lot of mortgage companies require it on any new con-struction.”
While Stone lets the hom-
eowner make the decision on whether the home is tested for the Energy Star label or not, he strives to build to En-ergy Star standards on all his homes.
“All of my houses meet or exceed Energy Star standard requirements. Not all of them are tested. When I build a cus-tom house, I let the owners make the decision. Some peo-ple want to pay for their label and some don’t. We know the requirements of Energy Star
and we’re meeting or exceed-ing them,” he said. “We’ve been building to those stan-dards a lot longer than we’ve been a partner with Energy Star. These days, it’s impor-tant to have energy effi cient housing or green housing. I saw a need in my own house and in anybody’s house to cut down maintenance costs forever. You can do things to make the house cost less when you’re building it, and that helps you now. But you
can build an energy effi cient house and that can help you for years to come. We try to fi nd the least expensive ways as possible to make a home energy effi cient.”
Donald said that on aver-age, building an Energy Star house increases costs from $100 per square foot to $102 per square foot.
“Building has become a science,” Donald said, saying that he can look at the ma-terials and appliances going into the house and fi gure an estimate of the HERS index. In offering an effi cient light-ing package, that rating im-proves.
“You can buy Energy Star fans and lights. I think peo-ple want something energy effi cient. Through Energy Star, they have something to hang their hat on.”
Rowdy Lisby, owner and president of Double L Home Construction in Wise County, said the next home he builds will meet Energy Star re-quirements. He became an Energy Star partner this year.
“I think that with the cost of fuel and everything, ev-eryone is going to be more energy conscious. This looks like one way to cut down on energy bills. And we want to remain competitive,” Lisby said, saying the home will be built in Reatta Estates.
In Lisby’s opinion, he doesn’t see building Energy Star homes as a priority on the majority of builders’ minds in Wise County.
“I think some will (build to Energy Star specifi cations), some I don’t think will,” he said. “I think they’ll think it’s too big of a hassle. But I’m not one of those people. I want to do it right.”

About Energy Star: En-
ergy Star was introduced in 1992 by the U.S. Environ-mental Protection Agency as a voluntary labeling program promoting energy-effi cient products. The label fi rst ap-peared on computers and monitors and is now seen on major appliances, offi ce equipment, lighting, home electronics, homes and com-
mercial and industrial build-ings.

Dear Savvy SeniorWhat fi nancial education
resources can you recom-mend to help an unsavvy woman prepare for retire-ment? I am divorced, living on a tight budget, approach-ing retirement age and need some help.
Nervous NellyDear Nelly,While most Americans
could stand to brush up on their fi nancial knowledge, it’s vital for unmarried wom-en. Here’s what you should know.
Retirement strugglesIt’s an unfortunate real-
ity that unmarried women – whether they’re divorced, widowed or never married – face far greater fi nancial challenges than men in re-tirement. Why? Because women tend to make less money (77 cents for every dollar a man makes) and have shorter working ca-reers (due to raising chil-dren and/or caring for aging parents) than men. And less money earned usually trans-lates into less money saved and a lower Social Security benefi t when you retire.
On top of that, women live an average of fi ve years lon-ger than men which requires their retirement income to stretch farther. And, accord-ing to studies, women also tend to be less knowledge-able and more intimidated about fi nancial issues than men, which means they don’t always handle their money as well as they should.
Because of these issues and more, it’s very impor-
tant that you, and women like you, become educated about fi nancial matters. Here are some resources and tools that offer fi nancial education that will help you better manage your money now and prepare for retire-ment.
Resources for women A good place to start is
with the Women’s Institute for a Secure Retirement. A savvy resource that offers easy-to-understand infor-mation on topics like money management, retirement planning, saving and invest-ing, as well as Social Secu-rity, health care and more. It also provides a retirement calculator and checklists of things you need to know if you become divorced, wid-owed or a caregiver. You can fi nd this information at www.wiserwomen.org or you can call (202) 393-5452 and order their publications for a few dollars. Two other Web sites worth a look are www.msmoney.com and www.wife.org.
More helpGo to MyMoney.gov, the
U.S. government’s Web site dedicated to fi nancial edu-cation where you can get their free “My Money” tool kit that includes a variety of publications on saving, investing, protecting and getting the most for your money. You can order the kit online or call 888-696-6639.
The Employee Benefi ts Security Administration, part of the U.S. Department of Labor is another smart resource that offers a vari-ety of free publications in-cluding the 62-page booklet
“Taking the Mystery Out of Retirement Planning,” and “Women and Retirement Savings” brochure. You can see them online at www.dol.gov/ebsa/publications, or call (866) 444-3272 and have them mailed to you.
Also visit ChoosetoSave.org, a handy Web site that offers the Ballpark Estimate retirement planning work-sheet, more than 100 online calculators, brochures, sav-ings tips and links to re-sources to help you manage your fi nances.
Social SecurityWhile Social Security
serves both genders, it can be a fi nancial lifeline for unmarried women. To help you get a better grip on your options, the Social Security Administration offers an on-line resource specifi cally de-signed for women that covers how marriage, widowhood, divorce, self-employment, government jobs and other life or career events can af-fect your Social Security. It also offers information on SSI, Medicare benefi ts and provides calculators to help you fi gure out your future earnings at different retire-ment ages. You can access this information at www.socialsecurity.gov/women or call (800) 772-1213 and order their free booklet en-titled “What Every Woman Should Know.”
Money managementThere are also a variety of
new Web-based services that can help you better manage your money at no cost. Sites like Geezeo.com, Mint.com and Wesabe.com provide
secure online tools that can help you automatically keep track of spending, set up budgets and goals and swap tips with other users on how to save money.
Savvy Tips: If you need some hands-on help, con-sider getting a fi nancial as-sessment or tune-up with a fee-only certifi ed fi nancial planner. Costs will vary from $100 to several hun-dred dollars but it can be very benefi cial and can help you make a plan. See www.napfa.org, www.garrettplan-ningnetwork.com or www.cfp.net to locate a profes-sional in your area. Also visit www.benefi tscheckup.org to see if you’re eligible for any government and/or private benefi ts like lower energy bills, tax relief, dis-counts on prescription drugs and more.

Deciding to fi nd your birth family can be a life chang-ing decision.
It’s a personal journey that could alter your per-ceptions of your family and yourself.
“Many adoptees want to know who their biological parents are and their an-cestry,” said Patricia Mo-lina, the Texas Department of State Health Services coordinator for the Central Adoption Registry.
“Many people are inter-ested in fi nding out more about their family back-ground, where they get their talents, or about their family medical history.”
The Texas Vital Statistics Central Adoption Registry reunites adult adoptees with birth parents or sib-lings who register looking for them.
This registry is unique because it has the author-ity to access sealed fi les or confi dential records without a court order.
Information may be re-leased when an adopted person and his or her birth parent or a biological sibling
both register voluntarily. The registry releases
identifying information af-ter the adopted person and the biological relative com-plete the following:■ A consent form to re-
lease personal information with their name, address, phone number and e-mail address.■ A one-hour post-adop-
tion counseling session that educates and prepares each person for the reunion.■ A written biography or
history about the person’s life.■ Copies of pictures from
infancy to adulthood, school pictures, their current fam-ily or other visual items.
Once these conditions are met, the registry sends each participant the registry in-formation and the biogra-phy of the other person.
Then it’s up to both par-ties to decide on when and where to meet.
“Meeting your birth fam-ily may be very healing,” Molina said.
“However, it’s important to be prepared for all types of scenarios because there
are no guarantees what will happen or what you may fi nd.”
The Offi ce of Vital Statis-tics keeps the original birth certifi cate so it’s easy to au-thenticate a match between two biologically related peo-ple.
This saves a lot of time without going through the court system or searching through other sources.
There are more than 30 child-placing agencies in Texas that operate their own voluntary adoption registry.
The Central Adoption Registry maintains a list of these child-placing agen-cies.
If an agency was involved in the adoption, the registry will identify that agency so that you can request servic-es from them.
Basic requirements for the Central Adoption Regis-try include:■ A person must be ad-
opted in Texas or be born in Texas and adopted in an-other state.■ Be the birth parent or
sibling of the adoptee.
■ Be 18 years of age or older.■ Provide proof of age and
identity (a copy of your birth certifi cate and a valid gov-ernment-issued photo ID)■ Make a check or mon-
ey order for $30 payable to DSHS.
To receive an application and learn how to apply, call the Central Adoption Regis-try at 888-963-7111, exten-sion 7388.

some red hot shooting come the fi rst of September.”
Hood and I picked a couple of Mesquite trees situated precisely between the food and a water source for the opening day hunt. Our little unoffi cial dove survey re-sulted in great anticipation for a barrel burning shoot in a couple weeks. Bryan is an excellent camp cook and he’s planning an opening day bar-becue for his dove hunting guests. It seems a long time since the close of our hunt-ing seasons and hunters from across the state are anxious to break out their shotguns and get into the dove fi elds.
I’m planning to open bow season on the ranch and af-ter scouting for doves, we headed to a remote section of the ranch and I set my ladder stand in close proximity to a feeder that has been throw-ing high protein deer chow for over a year. A trail camera positioned nearby evidenced the passing of some might big whitetail bucks, including a 10 pointer that I am willing to devote the time to hunt, come late September!
We chopped a hole into the side of a big cedar and posi-tioned Hood’s crossbow tripod stand inside the heavy cover, about 20 yards east of his feeder. As we drove into the area Bob is planning to hunt,
Bryan pointed out a couple of very respectable bucks cross-ing the ranch road. By now, I’m sure they have found Bob’s feeder and are helping themselves to the high pro-tein feed! We are approach-ing my favorite time of year, there are many good things to look forward to in the next few months. I’m positive all of you that enjoy the outdoors are feeling the same way about now!
For more information on the hunting at the Holt River Ranch, go online to www.hol-triverranch.com or call Bryan

As it now stands, conventional wisdom holds that a woman will undergo menopause at about the same age that her mother did. However, there are variations. While it is not too diffi cult to tell that a women over age 45 with hot fl ashes or erratic periods is about to reach menopause, women under age 45 have fewer clues to go on. Recently, Dutch researchers found an accurate, non-age-related way to predict menopause. It involves an ovarian hormone called anti-Mullerian hormone, or AMH. After tracking AMH in healthy, fertile women ages 25 to 46, researchers created a model that they say can predict when a woman will go through
menopause within a few years.
At our offi ce, we provide the highest quality of ob/gyn care to women of all ages. From general gynecologic care, pregnancy, birth control, treatment for menopause, to wellness care, we will provide you with the most up-to-date health care. For further information about anything discussed in today’s topic, call WISE OBSTETRICS & GYNECOLOGY P.A. at 940-626-8008. Our offi ce is conveniently located at 1713 South FM 51, Ste. 201, Decatur. New patients are
welcome.
Hormone tests such as the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) test may be used for predicting menopause when women under age 45 experience
erratic periods and hot fl ashes.

Pickles and ice cream may sound like a mouth-water-ing meal for your pregnant Aunt Peggy, but when your pooch is expecting a litter, nix the pickles and pack on the protein.
Pregnant and nursing ca-nines require an increased supply of nutrients, espe-cially calcium and protein, to support multiple growing fetuses, says Teresa Shisk, a veterinary technician in the College of Veterinary Medi-cine & Biomedical Sciences at Texas A&M University.
“Pregnant dogs not only have to support their grow-ing puppies, but themselves as well,” said Shisk. “This is especially true if the mother is two years or younger, be-cause younger dogs are still growing themselves and cannot afford to exhaust their nutrient reserves.”
During the pregnancy, which typically lasts 58 to 65 days, the fetuses will use calcium in the mother’s body to form strong bones, says Shisk. Once the puppies are born, the mother’s calcium will be used to produce milk to feed her litter. But if she hasn’t been on a calcium-rich diet, she may not have enough calcium to support
herself, resulting in a poten-tially life-threatening condi-tion called eclampsia.
Shisk says to keep your dog from experiencing any defi ciencies, a quality diet goes a long way.
“If your dog is on a good diet, it can stay on that diet until the last two weeks of pregnancy,” Shisk said. “Much of the puppies’ devel-opment will occur in the two weeks before the mother gives birth. Because they’re using more nutrients, the mother will need to ingest more nutrients. Then you’ll need to put her on a quality puppy formula.”
But why would an adult dog need food designed for pups?
Typically, puppy formulas are high in energy, easily digestible, contain a larger quantity of body-building protein and provide an ad-equate supply of calcium, says Shisk. She advises con-tinuing puppy food after the dog gives birth and through-out her lactating period. An added bonus is that the pup-pies, once ready to try solid food, will be able to nibble from their mother’s bowl and receive the right mix of nutrients.
Vitamins are available for pregnant and nursing dogs but there is no substitute for a quality diet, says Shisk. “You can’t fi x a bad diet with vitamins,” she believes.
Because her stomach is under more pressure than usual, your dog will prob-ably eat smaller meals on a more frequent basis, she notes.
“As long as the dog doesn’t have any medical problems and is basically healthy, it will consume enough to maintain itself and not over-eat,” Shisk said. “A complete loss of appetite is usually a good indication that she will go into labor soon.”
Even though it may look like Fifi isn’t getting her fi ll, pregnancy is no time to tempt her with table food.
“You want to be careful not to upset her balance,” said Shisk.
Table scraps like your un-wanted meatloaf can con-tribute to excessive weight gain and digestive problems in your pregnant dog.
Once your dog has given birth and nursed all of her puppies, it’s time to return her to a normal mainte-nance diet.
“Any time you change
your dog’s diet, you want to do it gradually over a period of about two weeks,” Shisk said.
Abruptly changing formu-las can upset your dog’s sys-tem and give her the “moth-er” of all stomach aches, she adds. Each time you feed your dog, add a slightly higher percentage of the food you want to change to until a complete transition is made.
Having raised many dogs herself, Shisk knows the im-portance of a healthy diet and proper care for a preg-nant dog.
“It wasn’t easy,” she re-called, “but I ended up with a healthy mother dog and some beautiful grandpup-pies.”

For the second year in a row, Hendershot Equipment, with locations in Stephen-ville and Decatur, has been chosen as the “Best-in-Class Farm Equipment Dealership of the Year” in the “one- or two-store” category by Farm Equipment magazine. More than 60 dealerships across North America were nomi-nated for the 2008 award.
Farm Equipment presents its “Dealership of the Year” awards annually to farm equipment dealerships in two categories: one for those operating one or two store locations and one for deal-ers operating more than two store locations. Hender-shot Equipment earned the distinction this year for its excellent fi nancial results, customer care, employee training and retention and creative management.
The dealership was chosen for the award by a panel of renowned farm equipment experts. In their selection of Hendershot Equipment, they specifi cally noted the dealership’s “strong sales per employee of $755,000;” “excellent profi tability;” “high customer-satisfaction ratings of 90 percent;” “high growth rate of 95 percent in fi ve years;” and “its focus on employee recruitment, hir-ing and retention.”
Founded in 1990, Hender-shot Equipment is a relative newcomer compared with the other dealerships nomi-nated for the award this year. Nonetheless, the deal-ership has become one of the
largest retailers of Case IH JX series tractors in North America.
In addition to carrying the complete Case IH brand of farm machinery, Hendershot also handles a wide range of specialty line equipment including Gehl, Polaris, Ver-meer, Rhino, Stihl, Great Bend, Aerway, Hustler and Dixon.
The judging panel in-cluded Dr. W. David Downey, director, Center for Agricul-tural Business, Purdue Uni-versity, West Lafayette, Ind.; David L. Kahler, Retired CEO of the Ohio-Michigan
Equipment Dealers Assn., Dublin, Ohio; and David R. Parker, vice president, Agri-business Group, Indianapo-lis, Ind.
Farm Equipment maga-zine profi led the winners of its Dealerships of the Year in the cover story of its July/August 2008 edition. The complete article can be seen at www.farm-equipment.com.
Farm Equipment maga-zine, based in Brookfi eld, Wis., serves more than 11,000 farm equipment dealers, wholesalers and distributors throughout North America. It is also the publisher of Rural Lifestyle Dealer, Ag Equipment Intel-ligence, No-Till Farmer and the Conservation Tillage Product Guide.
