To do that, Scott decided to sacrifice a chance to add more goals to her resume. She switched from striker to sweeper to help bolster a defense that had lost most of its starters. As a result, regional semifinalist South Fork (18-2-1) allowed just 0.57 goals a game. Not only was she the “glue to the defense,” according to coach Tony Iannitti, but she also brought value to the team’s of- fense. In tight games, Scott moved up and often came through with a clutch goal or two, finishing with 12 goals. For her contributions, Scott joins Vero Beach’s record- setting goal scorer, Alana Hockenhull, as the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers All- Area Girls Soccer Co-Players of the Year. “This season definitely was one of my biggest accomplish- ments,” Scott said. “I relied on my teammates a lot, but I think me moving back there made them more confident and that allowed us to go far. “We all worked well to- gether and had great communication.” The two goals Scott remem- bers best is a game-winner against Jupiter and one that sent South Fork to overtime in an eventual regional quarterfinal win over Viera. Hockenhull always came through in the clutch this season, scoring a school-record 48 goals, including nine game-winners, and 14 assists. For her contributions to Vero Beach’s perfect regular-season, 21-1 record and regional finalist finish, Hockenhull joins South Fork converted sweeper Laurie Scott as the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers All-Area Girls Soccer Co-Players of the Year. “I tried to push myself every game to get better and make a dif- ference,” Hockenhull said. To do that, Scott decided to sacrifice a chance to add more goals to her resume.
