Celebrating our cultural diversity The AEL Way!On Heritage Day South Africans across the spectrum celebrate their cultural traditions. Celebrations take place all over South Africa where everyone looks beyond their differences

and share common ground in celebration of our nation. AEL employees celebrated Heritage Day through sharing knowledge about their cultural heritage by showcasing their cultural

attire ranging from Indian and African to German and Dutch. To add to the spirit of Ubuntu felt throughout the day, management and the HR team awarded gift packs to all employees.

Thank you to all employees who submitted photographs from various sites across South Africa. The winning team was the beautifully dressed Skymark employees (above) who amidst

their busy work schedule managed to wear

elaborate traditional outfits and still perform

their duties for the day. We extend our

gratitude and appreciation to them for always

keeping our office spaces meticulously clean.

The celebrations were an indication that all

our employees make up one happy, close-

knit AEL family.

AEL invests 3% of its annual revenue into research and development (R&D) in order to remain on the cutting edge of technological development and add value to our customers’ operations. All Aboard chatted to one of the members of the R&D team, Chief Technologist, George Lubuschagne, who has been in the employ of AEL for over six years and has contributed to AEL’s success in the industry.

Give us a brief background of your career path?

After completion of my studies I was awarded a B.Sc (Technical) degree from the University of Potchefstroom.

I joined the work force with Armscor in 1988 where I was introduced to various aspects of the explosives industry. My field of expertise was shaped over the next 19 years. I devoted my time to detonic element design, large calibre and naval ammunition development. I also did explosives design with respect to primary explosives and pyrotechnics. Subsequently I was given the opportunity to venture into the field of project management and focused on explosives manufacturing plant design and installation. This gave me the opportunity to gain experience in various management-related aspects

AEL Hall of Fame

including marketing and customer relationship management.

What does your portfolio entail?

As Chief Technologist in the Research and Development department, my key responsibilities lie within the Initiating Systems Group where I focus mainly on initiating systems design, pyrotechnic development and related problem-solving and continued product and process improvements across the board.

What is your modus operandi? Is it aligned to The AEL Way (confidence, courage and care)?

I believe that one must manage one’s planning, problem-solving and decision-making with confidence, courage and care - as if the company belongs to you. Thereafter, quality, productivity and expenditure falls into place within the bigger picture.

What major projects are you currently engaged in?

We are currently busy with the development of all the rigid elemented delay detonators for the rest of the shock tube product range to enable the ISAP plant to produce the entire range of delay detonators. The following benefits are expected from this project:

• Standardisation of manufacturing techniques and safety advantages

• Full utilisation of installed ISAP detonator capacity

• Superior timing accuracy from pyrotechnic delay detonators

• Reduced lead content in final product• New element designs that are also

production-friendly• Upgrading of the existing out-hole and in-

hole detonator designs• Track-and-Trace of final assembled product

• Development of a range of spray dried pyrotechnic compositions which burn from 2ms/mm up to 245 ms/mm

The latest modified spray dried compositions have now been introduced at ISAP with great success.

What are we doing to stay relevant and on the cutting edge?

We do appropriate planning that is in line with the AEL long term strategic goals. Therefore we have various blue sky projects in the pipeline and short term research projects to remain aligned with The AEL Way of doing things. Thinking out-of-the-box is essential to maintain our position on the cutting edge of mining technology. We patent original ideas to prevent our competitors from using the technology. We also study our competitors to know their weak and strong points in the industry.

What is your vision for the future within AEL?

We are living and working in exciting times, new technology is constantly being developed and new trends are set in the ever-changing corporate world. Surely AEL will be affected by these changes and therefore it is my vision to be the best in my field of expertise to be able to adapt to the challenges coming our way.

Tell us something interesting about yourself?

I am a postgraduate student at the University of Pretoria busy with studies towards a Master’s degree in Chemical Technology from the Faculty of Chemical Engineering.

What are your interests away from the office?

Away from the office, I am 100% a family man. I spend all my free time with my wife and two sons. We love the outdoors and often venture onto the less beaten tracks.

Keeping our safety switches on at all times!

AEL’s annual Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) conference hosted in August advocated for ‘Zero Harm’ in the workplace. The conference is a platform for AEL safety personnel to adopt leading practices and to learn about the management and reporting of safety and health issues.

AEL’s activities are widespread, and because of this, the Group’s exposure is diverse, examples of which include mining-related and road safety issues, manufacturing of initiating systems, bulk explosives, chemicals and explosives, as well as general engineering activities. Across all businesses in the group, there is a strong focus on standardisation and an overall alignment of best safety and health practices.

The conference heightened awareness and encouraged employees and the organisation as a whole to always ensure that our safety and environment switches are on.

The main driver for the Safety Day at this conference was hazard identification. Delegates were introduced to the idea of snakes and how they can be likened to hazards and risks that we face in our business. The cardinal idea was the ability to identify possible risks we face and how these can be mitigated.

“Safety, Health and Environment issues within the Group remain the highest priority. We should afford these our undivided attention and ensure we have no injuries, anywhere under any circumstances,” commented Schalk Venter, Group Managing Director.

Astounding Safety Achievement Congratulations from Executive Director: Commercial, Trevor Roberts to the Commercial Team (formerly Global Business Services) for setting a sterling example to the organisation by reaching several safety milestones.

• Commercial Team - 1 year (369 days) without an “Impact / Contact Injury” (October 2014)• Commercial Team - 1 million recordable injury free man hours ( August 2014 )• Global Supply Chain - 2 million recordable injury free man hours ( April 2014 )• Procurement - 8 years without a recordable injury ( March 2014 )

These achievements are the result of the commitment of every member of the Commercial Team including their contractors, to health and safety. Trevor Roberts and the senior management of the team encourage the use of TAKE 5’s, focussing on the job-at-hand and safe driving among other focus areas and hold all team members accountable for any deviations from the norm. With continued commitment to keeping their safety switches on at all times, the Commercial Team will certainly go on to achieve many more milestones.

The

AEL

Way

Delivering Quality The AEL Way

In this issue’s Quality book review, All Aboard engages with Global Quality Manager, Linnea Cloete, who reviews Influencer by Joseph Grenny, Kerry Patterson, David Maxfield, Ron McMillan and Al Switzler.

Most people are faced with challenges when it comes to influencing people, whether it is at work or at home, it can be difficult. Influencer is an inspiring book that shares a simple technique on how to shift a culture from its current state to a new desired state. In essence the book is about identifying vital behaviours for solving problems.

It shares stories of how great influencers were able to make radical changes to the way things are done to eliminate serious problems such as disease and poverty. The examples of problems in the book are of such a magnitude that it makes one realise that if the technique can solve such huge issues then we must be able to apply it in business and our own Wildly Important Goals.

Influencer is not just a book for managers and senior executives, we can all learn from it. Although the process is not easy, the technique is simple and uncomplicated. It provides an understanding as to why many changes or solutions are not effective and just never deliver the results we know are possible. This teaches us how to get people to change the way things are done. It also got me to take a good look at myself and helped me to understand what I contribute to making a solution work or not work.

The best parts of the book are the stories of how some of the most difficult problems that affect millions of people were reduced or eradicated. An example is the story of Dr Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel Prize winner, who helped over 100 million poverty-stricken citizens of India become entrepreneurs and lift themselves out of poverty. That is almost double the number of people in South Africa!

The technique in the book is going to play a

role in how I approach Quality at AEL, making AEL’s Quality products and services something we can be proud of locally and internationally. By combining this technique with the Franklin Covey “4 Disciplines of Execution” (reviewed in the previous issue of All Aboard) – these two techniques will form a formidable tool in moving AEL to Excellence.

There are many areas of our organisation that can benefit from Influencer as there is a need to improve our approach to compliance areas like Safety, Quality and Environment. We tend to view compliance as “another thing to add to our list of things to do”. Changing our attitudes to “compliance in the way we work” will help ensure that we are always compliant.

I highly recommend picking up Influencer. In summary, you will learn:

• How to identify a handful of high-leverage behaviours that lead to rapid and profound change

• How to apply strategies for changing both thoughts and actions

• How to marshal the six sources of influence — such as finding strength in numbers, changing the environment and harnessing peer pressure — to make change inevitable

• What steps you need to take in order to become an opinion leader

• How to reward vital behaviours and not just good results

• Why studying positive deviance can help you identify vital behaviours and how to do it

Quality The A

EL Way

Quality Game Changers - Getting to know some of our Quality Champions

What is your role at AEL?I am the AEL EGYPT Site Manager at Sukari Gold Mine. What do you value about working at AEL?Personally AEL helps to build my career. Working for AEL has given me the courage and confidence to make the correct decisions in my work life and personal life, growing me in the right manner.

What is your role at AEL?I am presently employed as the Quality Coordinator (Quality Champion) of the FMS Workshop and I am responsible for maintaining and continually improving the Quality Management System as required by Group Quality.

What do you value about working at AEL?I value the work ethic and support I receive

from my colleagues. I value the great team work which inspires me to achieve greater heights as there is always a challenge placed in our path to do better and be better at what we do.

Why is Quality important to you?Quality is of utmost importance to me because I believe that the quality of work produced by a person reflects their values,

and their attitude.

Who is your role model in life and why?My dad, because of the simple and humble life he lived.

How is Quality important to you? At AEL I have learnt that quality should be my way of life. Quality is a single word with a massive meaning, which includes everything in human life. Personally I believe quality is following the best possible path in life. Who is your role model in life and why?My role model in life is Prophet Mohamed (peace and blessings be upon him); I have had a life long association with his life, his

words, actions and behaviour; which has touched my heart like no other personality or Hero in the world. What is the most exciting thing to ever happen to you?The most exciting thing to happen to me was the birth of my first daughter 10 months ago, making me a proud father.

What is your role at AEL?

My role at AEL is to provide an export order dossier that certifies:

• All exported products’ quality and quantity (IS)

• Adherence to all relevant product specifications.

Through these actions, I highlight existing inadequacies and impediments with regards to present systems functionality of traceability, labelling, data capturing, missing testing data and duplications.

What do you value about working at AEL?AEL cares for me! AEL provides a vast number of opportunities for growth. AEL evokes the courage in me to confront change, and become stronger through it all.

Why is Quality important to you?To me quality represents ATTITUDE. Without the right attitude towards anything you cannot strive towards or achieve quality. It is far more than providing good service and excellent products to a customer.

Quality should be in everything we do, every day. Quality time, quality work, quality actions and to strive to add quality to other

people’s lives.

Who is your role model in life and why?Lambert Vos, my dad, was my role model. Sadly he passed on last August after a brave battle with cancer. The enthusiasm with which he executed his daily tasks always amazed me. He showed me how to live life to the fullest. He unconditionally loved me and always helped me through good and bad times.

My dad was passionate about people and life. His motto was that anything that is worth doing, it is worth doing exceptionally! Chrisjolet Vos Muller
