Editor’s Note

Welcome to the final edition of All Aboard magazine for 2014.

To end the year, we have put together a jam-packed issue that is informative and entertaining.

Read about our colleagues’ great accomplishments in the business realm and harm-warming personal achievements in the private arena.

Our lead story, Partnering for Success highlights how AEL collaborates and builds relationships with its suppliers. In our Hall of Fame section we announce the imminent arrival of AEL’s 100th locally built mobile manufacturing unit (MMU). On the Movers and Shakers front, we meet newly appointed SF2 Plant Manager, Arnold Khumalo who is set to take SF2 plant to new heights.

AEL in the Field gives us a bird’s eye view of our participation at international events in Indonesia and Dubai. The AEL Knowledge Sharing section reports on our colleagues in Steelpoort who are imparting knowledge and offering career guidance to future engineers.

On a lighter note, we further our fitness and health drive by inviting employees to join the movement and register with the newly established AEL Running Club. In the interest of safety we provide you with useful road safety tips for the holidays. We round off this issue with the delightful bundle of babies who have joined the ranks of the AEL family.

AEL KNOWLEDGE SHARING

AEL participated in the annual Eastern Limb

Career Expo hosted by Samancor Eastern

Chrome Mines, Winterveld, Steelpoort from 21 -

23 October 2014.

The expo, aimed at grade 9 learners from various

the schools in the region, is sponsored by all

the mining companies in the area. With more

than 3500 learners in attendance, the expo

showcased products and services of several

experts offered advice to leaners guiding them

on subject choices for grade 10. Participants

included schools from Stofberg, Burgersfort and

what a development-end and a narrow reef stope

looks like. In addition, learners were shown video

footage of AEL’s surface and underground blasts.

On 31 October 2014 AEL hosted the annual Suppliers’ Day event themed “Collaboration for business growth and sustainability”. Suppliers in attendance have been collaborating with AEL enabling us to be on the cutting edge of new product development, product application and innovation. These suppliers have fully aligned their way of thinking with AEL’s ethos of quality and supplier collaboration enabling the formation of sustainable value-adding partnerships.

Over two hundred suppliers attended the event where Group Managing Director, Schalk Venter shared insights on AEL’s growth strategy. Thereafter delegates were informed about AEL’s sourcing strategy of the future by Executive Director Commercial, Trevor Roberts before finally being addressed about AEL’s technology showcase: “Energy of the future” by Executive Director Technology, Liesel De Villiers. Delegates had the opportunity to explore the impressive technology showcase whilst interacting with subject matter experts. Motivational speaker, author and CEO of the Granger Media Group, Alex Granger enthralled the delegates with a dynamic and entertaining presentation on championship thinking.

The conference session was followed by AEL’s Suppliers’ Awards Ceremony where accolades were presented to top suppliers in recognition for their dedication and superlative service to AEL over the past year. Our supplier award selection followed a stringent evaluation process based upon the AEL Supplier Quality Management programme i.e. the suppliers who have been selected and subjected to 2014 SQM audits. The awards comprised eight categories.

The following awards were accepted on behalf of two category winners who were unable to attend the awards.

Category A: Local Raw Material Supplier. Silcom (PTY) Ltd. is a supplier who demonstrates a strong commitment to research and development on a continual basis to improve the material offerings and performance.

Category B: Import Raw Materials/ Goods Supplier. Drahtwerk Elisental understands the conditions under which AEL operates and the volatility of the exchange rates; and strives to offer AEL cost effective solutions.

Category E: Engineering Services. Sheetlag Construction has a proven safety record in all its dealings with AEL; exceeds expectations and goes beyond the call of duty to deliver services to AEL with unquestionable workmanship, professionalism and reliability.

Category F: Engineering Goods SupplierT.L.T Industrial Supplies cc has displayed an awareness of all the latest technology in the market segment and shares learnings with AEL while continually supplying goods that conform to requirements.

Supplier of the year award: The overall supplier of the year award was presented to Silcom (Pty) Ltd. Silcom has been a strategic partner who has demonstrated an appetite and drive to improving the quality of materials or services rendered to AEL. They have been a proactive advisor to AEL in terms of future material and service supply constraints and have shown a proven track record in managing input costs thus ensuring material prices are contained. Congratulations to Sander Silvis and his team!

Farewell Baba Duma!

On a very emotional note, AEL bade farewell to

Global Procurement Manager, Sylvester Duma who

retired after a 41 year tenure at AEL. In an address

at the Suppliers’ Day event, Sylvester expressed his

gratitude to employees and suppliers for the many

years of relationship building. He was touched by the

heartfelt farewell messages delivered by his team.

Sylvester, affectionately known by his colleagues

as “Baba Duma”, will be remembered as one of the

remarkable sons of AEL who is a sterling example

of our company values of Confidence, Courage and

Care.

We wish Sylvester immense blessings and happiness

on his retirement.

MOVERS AND SHAKERS

All Aboard (AA) chatted to family man and football fanatic, Arnold Khumalo (AK) who recently joined the AEL family as Plant Manager SF2.

AA: Give us a brief background of your career path.

AK: My qualifications include a National Diploma: Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current) from Vaal Triangle Technikon, a one year Diploma in Production Management with the Production Management Institute of South Africa and a Management Development Programme qualification with Manchester University. I am currently studying towards a BCom degree in Quantitative Management through the University of South Africa (UNISA).

I began my career at Nampak DivFood (Metals Division) in August 2001 as a Trainee Technician where I completed my Experiential Training in August 2002. After a successful training period, I was appointed as Maintenance Scheduler in the diversified packaging plant in September 2002.

In 2003, I was appointed as Trainee Production Manager and progressed to Production Manager in June 2004. I held other manufacturing positions in Nampak Tubes & Tubs, Nampak Liquids (Rigid Plastics Division) and Nampak DivFood (Metals Division) until the end of July 2014.

AA: How long have you been employed by AEL Mining Services?

AK: It was three months at the end of October 2014, this means the honeymoon is over.

AA: What does your portfolio entail?

AK: As the Plant Manager, my portfolio entails managing the five manufacturing objectives - Safety,

Quality, Delivery, Costs and People.My key responsibilities are:

• Ensuring compliance with SHE standards, policies and procedures

• Plant management• To develop, track and manage the budget• People management and development• Business planning and improvement

AA: What is your modus operandi?

AK: Any business with no customers is only waiting for the official shutdown date. We are here because of and for our customers; therefore customer focus is vital to any business’ success and survival.

Over the years in manufacturing, I grew to become a firm believer that one can accurately predict the behaviour of equipment and raw material but not people. People are the difference between achieving and not achieving goals. I believe in building meaningful relationships.

I am an old-fashioned type of person who still values basic principles like respect, humility, hard work, commitment and dedication. I am positively energetic and optimistic.

AA: What are we doing to stay relevant and on the cutting edge?

AK: I think leading and managing in South Africa in the 21st century is no easy task and calls for a different approach. We are not only impacted by what happens in our country but we now contend with countries we never thought could compete with us. It is important for me to be ten times better than my competitor and to always stay ahead of the pack.

I recently read three books: “You Were Born Rich” by Bob Proctor, “The Greatest Sales Man In The

World” by Og Mandino and “The Richest Man In Babylon “ by George S. Clason. Reading leadership and management books and journals helps me to stay relevant. Reading is important because therein lies a lot of knowledge, wisdom and some answers to the problems we are facing. Furthermore, I am blessed to have mentors and coaches.

On the business front, I am still an infant at AEL but I’m keeping myself relevant by learning as much as I can about the business, our products and customers. I also think a lot about how we can improve productivity to help the business to be more competitive and thus sustain our future.

I see myself a leader who plays a particular role in a team,

contributing positively. As my daughter likes reminding me, “there

is no “I” in T.E.A.M – Together Everyone Achieves More.”

AA: What is your vision/ goal for the future within AEL?

AK: My immediate/medium-term goals are to keep SF2 TRIR & FAIR actuals below the limit, reduce customer complaints, ensure employees receive the required training and implement production plans to enable us to achieve the desired 30% productivity improvement.

AA: Tell us something interesting about yourself?

AK: I am married to Kelebogile and God has blessed us with two wonderful daughters, Aobakwe and Siphesihle.

loving family. My late father was Joseph “Press” Khumalo who managed the then Witbank Black Aces. I support Mamelodi Sundowns (SA), Arsenal (England) and Real Madrid (Spain).

I also enjoy Rugby. Brian Habana, Victor Matfield & Bakkies Botha remain my all-time favourites.Whenever possible, I compere functions and do motivational speaking especially to encourage and nurture young men.

AA: What are your interests away from the office?

AK: I enjoy reading leadership books by successful business leaders. My favourite leader is Jack Welch (former CEO of General Electric). I read and loved two of his books, “Winning” and “Straight From The Gut.”

I love taking walks with my wife, I find this therapeutic and relaxing. Nothing comes close to spending time with my family. God is central to my life and keeping spiritually fit is vital for me.

I also try to fix things around the house. It frees my mind and that’s where I get my “me time.”

AEL HALL OF FAME

AEL’s 100th locally built MMU will be ready for production

very soon. The local MMU building has come a long way

from the early beginnings in 2007 when two units per year

were produced. In recent years the number produced has

risen to 20 or more units per year. The first South African

designed and built MMU was the E15. The latest model is

named E115.

AEL proudly announces the imminent reveal of its 100th locally built Mobile Manufacturing Unit (MMU)

AEL’s Project Engineer, Happy Sethosa is responsible

for all the AEL MMU new builds and rebuilds. Happy has

recently designed and built a new heavy duty 16 ton MMU

for the more demanding off-road conditions in Central

Africa. The chassis of this unit is the new Astra 6x6 and is

set to be a real winner with a combination of “beauty and

the beast” features.

All the new MMUs are currently commissioned and

built by Happy and his small but dedicated team.

These team members provide world class support to

all locally built MMUs operating worldwide.

Join the movement! AEL’s Running Club was established in June 2014 by ISAP office manager, Merinda de Jager, and Process Engineer, Siyabonga Ngcongo, who both participated at this year’s Two Oceans Marathon.

The objective of the club is to promote a culture of wellbeing and fitness in the workplace. Membership numbers have increased substantially since the club’s inception as employees continue to express their interest in

networking with colleagues in a fun and engaging environment.

The running club aspires not only to grow in membership but to represent AEL at nationally recognised marathon events.

“We are proud to be involved in a social initiative that encourages friendship and athletics. We are even more excited to have runners at Senior Management level who recognise and support our cause. ” said Siyabonga.

The running club meets every Wednesday and Thursday afternoon at 16h15 outside Noble Gate, in Modderfontein.

AEL PASSION

Hands-on teaching and a relevant and industry-responsive curriculum is ensuring that the Cape Peninsula University if Technology (CPUT) develops female engineers who are playing key roles in the development of our society, The Faculty of Engineering covers a broad range of engineering disciplines, which are currently being reformed to respond to the demands of regional, national and global industry priorities in engineering education.

AEL has closely collaborated with the Cape Peninsula University of Technology’s (CPUT) Engineering department for almost last 15 years with several research and development projects. Recently four amazing accomplished academics from the university’s Faculty of Engineering were acknowledged in the latest issue of TOP WOMEN magazine.

“AEL congratulates these remarkable women and is very proud of our association with women of this calibre who strive to grow interest in students

in the science and engineering fields,” said AEL’s Senior Technologist, Dr Ellina Kharatyan, who works closely with the university.

The Faculty of Engineering is proud of its quota of 26% of highly qualified female academics. This number is equivalent to the number of female students enrolled at the Faculty of Engineering. These academics are leaders in their respective fields, having published extensively, clinched millions of rands in research grants and are recipients of national and international accolades.

Thanks to these hard-working, dedicated academics, the Faculty of Engineering leads innovation and research activities at the institution which is spearheaded by the Dean, Dr Nawaz Mahomed, the two assistant Deans, Prof Marshall Sheldon (Academic) and Prof Veruscha Fester (Research and Innovation) and Prof Raynitchka Tzoneva.

AEL QUALITY

Delivering Quality The AEL Way

In this issue’s Quality book review, All Aboard engages with Group Quality and Capability Manager, Linnea Cloete, who reviews Simple by Alan Siegel and Irene Etzkorn.

The book Simple by Alan Siegel and Irene Etzkorn

urges people to make business practices as simple

as possible, this is important because the world we

live in today is becoming increasingly complex. This

complexity hampers the smooth flow of business and

costs people and businesses huge sums of money.

The book employs three core principles for

simplifying almost anything: the need to empathise,

distil, and then clarify. Of course, this is easier said

than done as Da Vinci once stated, “simplicity is

the ultimate sophistication”, but companies such

as Apple have managed to turn simplicity into a

competitive advantage and look where they stand

today!

Simple is for anyone that is faced with complicated

business practices that are in need of review. A key

point about simplicity is that it is about shortening

the distance between company and customer;

between management and workforce. It begins

with understanding the circumstances and needs of

others and how to empathise. This is no longer being

viewed as a ‘soft’ emotion, but business practice.

Once there is a better understanding of what is

needed, you are in a better position to make decisions

on behalf of others. It is at this point that you lessen

the options and choices that are often overwhelming

– to distill. But remember, “Simplicity is that exact

medium between too much and too little” (Joshua

Reynolds). Once information is distilled, it is crucial

to clarify the message you want to get across in order

for it to take hold.

The best part of Simple is that the authors practice

what they preach; it is short and concisely written.

They give anecdotal evidence of the overlap between

companies that have simplified and experienced

major success through it. Unsurprisingly, Apple and

Google play a prominent role. That being said, the

book would have been even better if they included

bullet point summaries at the end of each chapter to

really drive their points home.

To benefit properly from the book, I recommend

giving it a read and applying its principles when it

comes to year-end reviews in an effort to streamline

processes and eliminate unnecessary complexity.

In summary, you will learn the following:

• How companies both large and small have

benefitted from simplifying practices

• How to apply three core principles:

1. Empathise: Perceive others’ needs and

expectations

2. Distil: Boil down and customise what is being

offered to meet needs

3. Clarify: Make the offering easier to

understand, use, and benefit

• Top down, bottom up approach to simplifying an

organisation

AEL IN THE FIELD

AEL represented at key international industry events

MENA (Middle East and North Africa) Mining Show 2014The MENA Mining Show which took place from 21-22 October at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, UAE. brings together the region’s mining community to promote investment, optimise operations and build relationships.

The conference, an international gathering for mining industry delegates from all over the world saw delegates in attendance from countries as far afield as Ghana, Niger, Ethiopia, Eretria, Sweden, USA and Far East. The event presented great networking opportunities for delegates who also were able to gain valuable information on the future of mining in the Middle East.

One of the most note-worthy presentations at the conference was by David Hale, renowned world economist and CEO of the “David Hale Global Economist”. David delivered an overview and prediction of the performance of the world economy over the next few years which enabled delegates to gain great insights.

AEL representatives at the conference were Executive Director: Africa, Europe & Middle East , Thinus Bierman; Divisional Director: North East Africa, Mark Benning; Product Manager International Channels, Christa Esterhuizen; Field Electronic Technician, Sandile Ngubo and Regional Manager – Burkina Faso, Mohammed Elgharraz. AEL will be present at the 2015 event.

Mining & Engineering (M&E) Expo Indonesia AEL Indonesia participated in the Mining & Engineering (M&E) Expo which was held at the Jakarta International Expo (JIE), Kemayoran from 29-31 October 2014.

AEL’s Carlos Paz, Simon Tose, Rudianto Sitanggang, Radja Nove Putra and Achmad Annama Chayat were present at the exhibition with the objective of networking with potential customers while showcasing AEL’s product and service offerings.

The impressive exhibition stand was shared between Experse and AEL (both part of the AECI group of companies). The exhibition highlighted the importance and value of various kinds of products and services related to the mining and minerals processing industry.

Employees may receive gifts at any time in the year. The principle adopted within AECI for receiving and giving of gifts is that:“an employee should only accept gifts and entertainment that are for business purposes only, and which are not too frequent”

An employee must therefore do the following to avoid any potential conflict of interests with respect to receiving gifts:> Gifts worth R0 - R500: No need to declare> Gifts worth R500 – R2000: Must be declared using Form 001> Gift over R2000 in value: Line manager/supervisor must authorise the acceptance of such gift. Once permission has been

granted, the recipient employee must complete and sign Form 001 declaring such gift. The immediate manager/supervisor must also sign Form 001 as an indication that they authorise the acceptance of such gift.

For road travellers, the December holiday period can be the most dangerous time of year. A total of 1 376 people were killed on South Africa's roads during the 2013 festive season. For the period under review, 1 December 2013 to 7 January 2014, there were 1 147 crashes nationally with 1 376 fatalities. These alarming statistics must drive us as responsible citizens to keep our safety switches on at all times. The following road trip tips will help you stay safe and a little less anxious on your next road trip.

Have your car examined before you leave. This is one of the most crucial driving tips. The last thing you want to worry about is your car breaking down, leaving you stranded far away from home. Take it to your service centre for a quick once over, and make sure your tyres are in excellent condition and properly inflated.

Be prepared for a change in course. Before you depart, become confident in knowing your route especially if you do not have a GPS system. It is very important that you’re ready for anything on the road that could slightly change your plans, including construction, road closures and traffic hurdles. Remember to keep the directions as well as appropriate route map handy, in case you need to reroute your trip.

Stay hydrated for the journey. It probably seems like dehydration is not very likely, but a recent study shows that dehydration is a common occurrence. Your body also requires fuel so rely on high-energy food including sandwiches, fruit and thermos flasks filled with soup.

Pack a safety kit for the car. Don’t leave without the essentials for a safe road trip — emergency services contact details, your spare tyre, water, a cell phone (don’t forget the car charger), tow rope, jumper cables, flashlight and first aid kit.

Make frequent rest stops. Driving is much more fatiguing than you think. Make time to stop and stretch your legs. Just a few minutes off the road will make all the difference in improving your alertness when you’re back behind the wheel.
