Hymn to Freedom Audience Sing-Along

When every heart joins every heart and together yearns for liberty,

that’s when we’ll be free.

When every hand joins every hand and together molds our destiny,

that’s when we’ll be free.

Any hour, any day, the time soon will come when all will live in dignity,

that’s when we’ll be free.

When everyone joins in our song and together singing harmony,

that’s when we’ll be free.

a new ChaPter

In 1980 a group of choral music lovers decided that Guelph needed a new choir dedicated to singing the finest works of the repertoire with skill and musical sensitivity. Our first performance, on December 7, 1980, featured twenty-six singers in front of an audience of nearly two hundred at Harcourt Memorial United Church. Conductor Gerald Neufeld has led the choir for all but two years of its history when Kathryn Laurin ably took the baton.

After Gerald Neufeld’s retirement in 2018, an extensive search process was conducted during the 2019 season and Charlene Pauls was named Artistic Director and Conductor starting with the 2019/2020 season.

Over the years our ranks have swelled and our talents deepened. Now at forty voices strong we still hold close to the ideals of chamber singing: lightness and clarity of tone, subtle blending of developed voices, and clear communication of the meaning and spirit of both text and music.

Singers in the Guelph Chamber Choir represent various walks of life; their common bond is to foster community enjoyment and appreciation of choral music through performances, outreach, artistic collaboration, and community partnerships.

We remain an integral part of the strong musical heritage of Guelph. Our performances include repertoire from Renaissance masters to contemporary composers, from classical styles to Broadway and vocal jazz, and from unaccompanied choral gems to masterworks with full orchestra.

We often collaborate with other choirs from across Canada and within our own community. We have participated in festivals throughout Ontario and have toured Great Britain, Ireland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and the Czech Republic. Our success has been recognized through a number of broadcasts on national radio and prizes in the National Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs.

In a world that increasingly seems to highlight so much of what is negative about the human spirit, today we have created a program that does the opposite. We tend to hear so much about the problems in our world, however, throughout time there have always been those around us who have made an impact through positive change, who have created innovations that have improved society, and who have made the world a better place. Fundamentally, I believe that the foundation of society must be relationships, humanity connecting with each other, because it is only then that we can have empathy and create positive change.

This concert is all about that.

Chilcott’s Five Days that Changed the World is the cornerstone of the program. In this work UK composer Bob Chilcott highlights five moments in time that have connected people: the invention of the printing press, the abolition of slavery, the invention of flight, the discovery of penicillin, and the first human in space. Musically, Chilcott connects different groups of singers as well; it is written for SATB choir with a treble obbligato, and in our concert we will have the Guelph Collegiate and Vocational Institute (GCVI) Chamber Choir join us to perform the piece. The music is wonderfully varied, with threads of humour, poignancy, and wonder woven throughout the various movements.

The remaining works in the concert celebrate connections between us, such as Winnipeg composer Andrew Balfour’s welcoming song Ambe (sung in Ojibway), American composer Joan Szymko’s It Takes A Village, French composer Maurice Duruflé’s Ubi Caritas, Canadian composer Sarah Quartel’s Sing My Child, and a great gospel arrangement of Paul Simon’s Bridge Over Troubled Water by Kirby Shaw. Other pieces on the program include works that challenge us to action, such as Eric Whitacre’s Cloudburst that urges us to ‘dream with our hands,’ Kingston composer Benjamin Bolden’s Tread Softly (a setting of Yeats’ famous poem that ends with the line, ‘Tread softly because you tread on my dreams’), and Oscar Peterson’s famous Hymn to Freedom.

It is a pleasure to work together this afternoon with Lane Osborne and the GCVI Chamber Choir, Richard Moore on an array of percussion instruments, and of course, we are always fortunate to have Alison MacNeill making music with us on the piano. Welcome to the first concert of our season. We look forward to having you join us for the remaining as we launch this new chapter of the Guelph Chamber Choir.

Dr. Charlene Pauls has been an active choral conductor, vocal soloist, adjudicator, and pedagogue for over 25 years. Drawing on this extensive experience, Dr. Pauls’ approach focuses on developing a beautiful choral sound through a deep understanding of healthy vocal technique.

Over the course of her career, she has directed a wide range of adult, university and youth choirs. She is Associate Artistic Director of the 250-voice strong Oakville Choir for Children and Youth where she directs Raise Her Voice Chamber, an ambassadorial ensemble selected from within the organization’s senior singers. In July 2018, Raise Her Voice was featured at the national choral conference Podium, and was one of five choirs in Float, a special Canada Council multi-media project that took place in St. John’s. On July 1, 2019, Raise Her Voice was awarded first place in the National Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs.

From 2016 to 2018 Dr. Pauls was the Artistic Director of London’s Pro Musica Choir, and this past season she was pleased to guest conduct London’s Chor Amica choir and the Guelph Chamber Choir. In 2018 Dr. Pauls also founded the Mosaic Music Collective, a project-based choir bringing together newcomers to Canada with other residents of the community to explore music from around the world and to create cultural bridges.

Dr. Pauls has appeared as a soprano soloist on concert stages across Canada and internationally in Germany, England, France and Spain, under the baton of conductors such as Robert Shaw, Bramwell Tovey, and Helmuth Rilling. Academic studies include undergraduate degrees from the Universities of Winnipeg and Manitoba in theology, piano and voice, a Master’s from McGill, specializing in Early Music, and a Doctorate from the University of Toronto in Vocal Performance, with a dissertation on Bach’s Cantata BWV 210.

In addition to her active performing and teaching career, Dr. Pauls frequently presents at academic conferences and is in demand as an adjudicator for Voice and Choral festivals across the country.

This past season, Dr. Pauls was thrilled to be awarded the Leslie Bell Prize for Choral Conducting from the Ontario Arts Council.

The GCVI Chamber Choir welcomes dedicated singers from grades 9-12 with varying levels of choral experience who are motivated to learn challenging repertoire from diverse genres, countries, and cultural traditions. The choir has been humbled by their successes in Musicfest Canada’s regional competitions across the province, and subsequently their six consecutive invitations to Musicfest Nationals. On the international stage, the choir has enjoyed receptive audiences in England at the Harrogate International Youth Festival of the Arts, where where they will be returning in April 2020 to be featured performers at several UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Canadian Choral Series. In addition to their annual participation in local and international festivals, the choir has garnered widespread recognition for their work from David Crosby (of The Byrds and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young) and for their multiple appearances on the 40th Anniversary Tour for international best selling rock band, Foreigner.

Caught somewhere in the cosmos between Stravinsky and The Sugarhill Gang, Lane Osborne has become a known name in the progressive world of music education in Southern Ontario. As a passionate educator trained at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto, she was recently granted admission on full scholarship to the University of Michigan’s PhD program in music education at its renowned School of Music, Theatre and Dance. In Guelph, Lane teaches all levels of guitar, vocal music as well as music theatre. She is the thrilled director of the nationally recognized GCVI Chamber Choir.
