STRATEEGY REPORT

ASSESSMENT

Karachi is the biggest city of Pakistan and comes on the 7th rank in the biggest City of the world, Karachi is located in the Sindh state, it is a biggest city of the country and much populated, there are few very active community based organization working for the betterment of the society like EDHI welfare, AGHA KHAN, and many more but no one is very active for providing food specially for the homeless people, these organizations provide food for one day or occasionally like if rich people have party or birthdays, marriage so the food which was left after the party they send it to these organization and they serve food to the people but sometimes they serve food only to those people who live in there orphanages or in the other charitable organization but they hardly serve food to the people who are homeless and forced to live on the street because of the poverty,

I would like to develop an organization in Karachi which distribute food and clothes in the most needed people of the community especially for the homeless people of Karachi who don’t have food to eat, clothes to wear, shelter to live.

During my research I found three charities organizations that are doing great job of providing food and clothes, two organizations are in India and one is in Australia, i am very much impressed with these organizations and these organizations influenced me to developed a new organization which provide food and clothes for the homeless people who don’t have food to eat, clothes to wear, and shelter to live...

1, PROFILE OF COMMUNITY BASED ORGANIZATION

Akshaya trust

Narayanan Krishnan, a former gourmet chef, founded the non-profit Akshaya Trust to serve meals to Madurai, India's homeless population.

In 2002, Narayanan Krishnan, a gifted young chef from Madurai, India, was working for an exclusive hotel group preparing haute cuisine for the ultra-rich. But when he went home to visit his family, something he saw shocked him to his core “I saw a very old man eating his own human waste for food”

Krishnan knew he couldn’t go back to the gourmet restaurants he’d been working in when his own countrymen were starving to death. So he decided to stay in India and begin fixing meals for that man, and for the countless others who could not care for themselves. The following year, he founded the non-profit group Akshaya Trust. The community based organization which named for the “Akshaya bowl” from Hindu mythology, a bottomless bowl that can feed the hungry forever—just as Krishnan hopes his group will do.

Each morning, Krishnan and his team rise at 4 AM, and seek out the homeless throughout a 123-mile radius, armed with packets of hot vegetarian meals that Krishnan has prepared by hand. He brings the meals to a crowd of about 400 regulars, and gives them free haircuts and beard trims when they need it. In the years since starting the non-profit, he’s served over 1.2 million meals.

This excess food is distributed to the charities supporting the vulnerable in Sydney, Canberra, Newcastle and Adelaide. OZ Harvest was founded in Sydney, November 2004. They began with one van and delivered 4000 meals in their first month of operation. Currently in Sydney OZ Harvest delivers 180,000 meals per month with a fleet of 10 vans.

OZ Harvest collects food from function centers, caterers, restaurants, supermarkets, corporate offices, cafes, tourist operators and provides that food to charity. OZ harvest is the only charity that collects and delivers excess perishable food in Sydney on a daily basis.

2, IDENTIFIES THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE TARGET GROUP

After a lot of research on these organizations I came to know that there are a lot of organization doing a great job for the betterment of the humanity specially for hunger , it doesn’t matter from which country or part of the world you are. During my research I found a lot of similarity between these organizations, even they are not from the same country and state, Akshaya trust is an Indian organization based in banglor city if India, Oz harvest is an Australian organization, virindavan is an organization from a different state of India, but After knowing about these organization in the detailed research, I came to know the various ways to set up an organization with similar functioning methods, their best practice methods and how to consider a range of viable options for making this program sustainable. These three organizations are working successfully form last many years.

The organization which I would like to set up with the combined function of Akshaya trust and OZ harvest and food for life Vrindavans named as Ali brothers. Ali is a very respectable name in the Pakistani society means A friend of GOD and brothers means everyone are similar, no matter what is your skin color, what language you speak, from which culture you belongs to, all are same in this world.

3, Considering the possible contribution to the development of a new program that could be made by researching the work of two other similar programs already operating outside of the proposed programs locality.

ALI BROTHERSParticipative developmental Framework and contribution

Participatory Development seeks to engage local populations in development projects. Participatory development (PD) has taken a variety of forms since it emerged in the 1970s, when it was introduced as an important part of the "basic needs approach" to development. Most manifestations of PD seek “to give the poor a part in initiatives designed for their benefit” in the hopes that development projects will be more sustainable and successful if local populations are engaged in the development process. PD has become an increasingly accepted method of development practice and is employed by a variety of organizations. It is often presented as an alternative to mainstream “top-down” development.

4, STRATEGY FOR PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT THAT CONSIDERS ISSUE OF PROGRAM SUSTAINABILITY

Developing a new non-profit organization which provides food for homeless people in Karachi, ALI BROTHERS works based on participative developmental framework. The frame work analyses three components of participative development, ‘what’, ‘who’ and ‘how’. On the bases on the participative developmental framework “WHAT” consider on the nature of the task and the relationship that are established between local people/resident and professionals? The food which is provided/ donated from the owner of the restaurants, bakery, shops, hotels, and from the supermarket to the workers/people of ALI BROTHERS are equally involve in this program. People from restaurant owner, bakery owner, hotel, supermarket owner donate their food which is excessive near to the expiry date and worker/people from ALI BROTHERS will collect this food from them.

Page 8: Ali brothers food for homeless people

“WHO” indicates the local people/residents, the people/worker of ALI BROTHERS and the target group. The local people who are participating in this program, workers from ALI BROTHERS and the target groups comes “WHO participative framework”.

The ‘how’ describes the participative development as an interactive process. Assessing where the initiative for participation comes from, which inducements for participation are involved, whether participation is voluntary or coerced and whether the structures of participation are formal or informal.

Participative developmental Framework provides the proper way of work and if we start our work with this three important component of the framework we can work better. After looking at this framework “WHAT” will be our food which is provided/ donated by the owner of the restaurants/ bakery, supermarket, small food shops, and we have to make sure that the quality of the food should be good and it should be collected before the expiry date “WHO” & “HOW” will be the worker of the ALI BROTHERS & local people/ resident who will work and collect the food and distribute the food after the inspection of the food quality and we have to make sure that we must distribute the food in the target group in the same day.

5,Sustainability of program

\Sustainability is the most important factor in any organization. It is very important to get sustainability in your organization; few factors can affect the sustainability of the organization, there few factors like,

1) Funding2) Quality of food 3) Quality of services 4) Relationship with local people/ residents5) Relationship with owners who provide food & clothes6) Leadership7) Good support from the community

Page 9: Ali brothers food for homeless people

FUNDING like Red Cross

Funding is the main issue in the sustainability of any organization, if we want the proper way of funding so we have to make a very good relationship with our clients and for the people who wants to donate something like money or food, so we can make a contract with them like a mobile plane that if people want to donate some money so every month/ fortnight the bank will deduct some money from their account and will transfer the money in our organization’s account. This is the red cross funding policy that they apply all over the world and they are very successful in the fund raising policy.

GOOD FOOD QUALITY

Food quality is the big issue in the providing of food in the homeless people. We have to make sure that the food which was collected from the parties/ restaurants/ bark , certain houses is in a good quality and has to be delivered to the people without any delay otherwise it can be cause of food damage. It is also make sure that the food which is distributed is hygienic and fresh. After collecting the food we can do a good food quality inspection before the distribution ion the homeless people

All of the above factors are important but the most important factor is to provide good quality of food and neat and clean clothes. But all of the above factors are necessary to maintain the sustainability of an organization. There should be strict rules and regulation about the food quality and the delivery.

Those people who are donating the food will get our rules and regulation flyers and pamphlets that what kind of quality of food should be at time of donating, it must be hygiene, we will do the good food quality inspection after collecting the food from the donator and the inspection of food will be done by the

Page 10: Ali brothers food for homeless people

health inspector of the organization to make sure it is hygiene and good to eat before we deliver it to our target group.

CLOTHES FOR HOMELESS PEOPLE

Proving clothes is not a very big issue but neat and clean clothes can be an issue, the clothes are donated by the textile shops and factory and from the charity organizations. Dresses donated by individuals are not collected from their home. These clothes can be dropped in the plastic bins which is kept in front of the branch offices or in community centers. Even clothes are washed and dried clean before distribution.

Before we start collecting food and clothes we have to do some advertisement about our organization that what we do and how we help homeless people and how people can join us do help for the homeless people. So our 1st target should be to let people know about us and for that we have to make Flyers or pamphlets and that are distributed throughout the shops and restaurants so that anyone who is interested in donating their food can contact us. The names of the shops/restaurants providing food were printed in the pamphlets so as to advertise the shops name and thereby they are happy to donate their food and clothes.

If we can work on our all sustainability factors and provide a good services to our target group and community so we can make this program sustainable.
