The mission of the Society of Women Engineers isto empower women to achieve full potential in careersas engineers and leaders, expand the image of theengineering and technology as a positive force inimproving the quality of life, and demonstrate thevalue of diversity and inclusion.

$50k Endowment Celebrates Hawaii’s FirstWoman EngineerBy Shawnja and Erin Yamaguchi

New Scholarship honors one legacy andcreatesopportunitiesfornewones

The Hawaiian IslandsSection (SWE-HI) of theSociety of WomenEngineers (SWE) isexcited to announce a$50,000 endowment fundwith our “first”scholarship to beawarded August 2021.

The Mae NakataniNishioka ScholarshipFund is an annual awardmanaged by the HawaiiCommunity Foundation

on behalf of SWE-HI. This scholarship is opento Hawaii residents pursuing a STEM career andidentifies as women, non-binary, transgender,two-spirit, and/or third gender.

This honors the legacy of Masako “Mae”Nakatani Nishioka, the humble and steadfast“girl” who in 1954 became the first womangraduate from the University of Hawai‘i atMānoa College of Engineering. Mae understoodthat gender parity is powerful. She lovedmentoring students and sharing her passionwith professionals in engineering andtechnology. She continues to pave the way byinspiring other students to create their ownlegacy.

From the government to the boardroom, 2020was the year people of all races and gendertook to the streets to educate the nation onsystematic inequality. In Hawaii, more than 66years earlier, that “girl” bravely broke glassceilings that are still being broken today.

ABOUT THE FUNDSociety of Women Engineers (SWE HI)Scholarship Fund in Honor of Mae NakataniNishioka

This fund, in honor of Mae Nakatani Nishiokaand started in 2020, is for women majoring inengineering and technology. Requirements:

    • Be a resident of the State of Hawaii

    • Demonstrate financial need

    • Be in good academic standing bymaintaining a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0

    • Student intending to study or enrolled in an

ABOUT SWE AND SWE-HIThe Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is the

world’s largest advocate for women inengineering and technology. SWE helps over40,000 members to reach their full potential andchampions the value of diversity by being thecatalyst for change. SWE - Hawaiian IslandsSection (SWE-HI) works to advance genderparity and equality and hosts outreachprograms to inspire the next generation ofHawaii engineers. Find out more at hi.swe.org.

    OCEAN RESOURCES NOWAVAILABLE

Can ocean thermal energy conversion andseawater utilization assist small islanddeveloping states? That’s just one of theimportant questions that a new book edited byCivil & Environmental Engineering ProfessorAlbert Kim asks. “Ocean Thermal EnergyConversion (OTEC): Past, Present, andProgress” is a fascinating read that readdressesthe past achievements, present developments, and future progress of ocean thermal energy, and dares the reader to consider how the worldcan advance the utilization of ocean resourcesgiven that the 21st century has beencharacterized as an era of natural resourcedepletion, causing humanity to be faced withseveral threats due to the lack of food, energy, and water. It highlights the fact that climatechange and sea-level rise are at unprecedentedlevels–phenomena that make predicting thefuture of ocean resources more complicated.

o PACNET started as the first packet-broadcasting satellite network linking sites inAlaska, Australia, California, Hawaii, and Japan.

o PACNET utilized the ALOHA protocol.

Inspired by ALOHAnet “ARPA initiated thePRNET project in 1973, funding both theoreticaland experimental research. Its goals wereoutlined by Bob Kahn, namely, to investigate thefeasibility of using packet-switched, store-and-forward radio communications to providereliable computer communications in a mobileenvironment.” PRNET goal was to address asignificantly harder set of problems notaddressed by ALOHAnet; specifically, multi-hopcommunications between mobile vehicleswithout a central station.

As a researcher, Dr. Abramson obtainedALOHAnet FY67 funding through Project Themisa Department of Defense (DoD) program thatwas established to fund “have-not” researchuniversities. DoD only funded research efforts attop tier universities at that time. Project THEMISprovided the largest amount of research projectfunds that the University of Hawaii had everreceived to fund the ALOHA System inSeptember 1968.

In addition to its research goals, the purposeof ALOHAnet was to solve a significant issue thatrequired a significant amount of funding —leased, dedicated telephone lines connectingthe University of Hawaii main campus mainframecomputer on Oahu to the terminals and remotesites on the other islands.

The University of Hawaii system consists of: amain campus on the island of Oahu; a four-yearcampus on the island of Hawaii; five two-yearcommunity colleges on the islands of Oahu,

    ALOHAnet,continued from Page 1

Kauai, Maui, and Hawaii; and a number ofresearch institutes with operating unitsdistributed throughout the state. All of theUniversity of Hawaii facilities while residing ondifferent islands, are within a radius of 200 milesfrom the main campus located on the island ofOahu. The goal of the ALOHAnet (aka ALOHASystem) was to connect these geographicallyseparated facilities with relatively low-costcommercially available radio equipment

“The attitude that we had was that the existingtelephone network, which was used by people inthose days, was the wrong approach,”Abramson says. “The telephone network wassomething that was set in place at the end of the19th century, and we were at the end of the 20thcentury. We thought that radio communicationsmight be a good way to start on it.”

Today, with the exception of Wi-Fi (it utilizessingle channel communications), ALOHAchannels are utilized in all major mobile networksand in almost all two-way satellite data networksto establish the initial communications link.
