We were incredibly lucky this month to have some of our fi rst international volunteers - a wonderful group of philanthropic women from Chile! Th ese visitors are invited to the United States under the auspices of the Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program. Th ey were able to embark on projects with the goals of strengthening the administrative angle of major philanthropic corporations and foundations in Chile, proposing new ideas for project funding, and working on

how to manage foundation resources. Th e group is able to learn from family foundations in the United States through how they operate and

how are structured to make better use of their resources. While seeing the impact in the fi eld, they were able to understand why various foundations focus on their chosen priorities! We were able to pair the group with teens from St. Mary’s Academy to work on projects with one of our members, and could not be more grateful for the support!

We are excited to welcome our new Operations Manager, Rylie! Rylie has volunteered for her whole life, and is ready to turn that passion into a career. She also works as a freelance photographer, enjoys painting, and spending time with her cat and dog. Welcome, Rylie!

Thanks to our groups!

Welcome Rylie!

Caring and Sharing GroupNothing stays the same, including each of us. Change is inevitable. As we grow older, we naturally experience more loss. We usually equate “loss” with the death of a spouse, relative, dear friend, or cherished pet. Although we may not think of it in these terms, loss is much more: Loss of our dreams, projections, and fantasies; what our thoughts, plans, and hopes were for this period in our lives; loss or compromise of physical agility, mental acuity, fantasies about our primary relationships, our former career as well as an anticipated loss. We are never the same aft er a loss. Th at’s normal and to be expected. It is the human experience and exerts major impact on our emotional functioning. We may experience a myriad of feelings: anxiety, fear, guilt, anger, or depression. Join counselor Hal Goldberg for a caregiver support group that will provide the framework to more deeply understand the impact of loss and grieving. Th is group provides an opportunity to explore these issues with others, who like all of us have experienced various types of loss. Importantly, the group will establish a caring, listening, and supportive community. Exploring our experiences and reactions to them will always bring us greater understanding and appreciation of life and what is yet to come. Please contact the offi ce if you’d like more information at 720-242-9032 or offi [email protected].

Colorado Gives Day is December 4th and is A Little Help’s biggest giving day of the year! Each year, Community First Foundation and FirstBank are present Colorado Gives Day on the first Tuesday of December.. This annual statewide movement celebrates and increases philanthropy in Colorado through online giving. The $1 Million Incentive Fund created by the partners is one of

the largest giving-day incentive funds in the country. Donate on ColoradoGives.org to make your donation or preschedule your gift today. You can also give by calling our offices or by sending a check.

Colorado Gives Day has become a celebration for us each year. We will have a holiday party in each area we serve to celebrate the A Little Help community and the generosity of our neighbors. Once again this year, our Metro Denver Branch Annual Holiday Party and Colorado Gives Day Celebration will be at 6:00 p.m. on Colorado Gives evening (December 4th) at 4100 E Mississippi (Montgomery | Amatuzio | Dusbabek | Chase LLP) on the 16th floor. We thank A Little Help volunteering member John Chase (managing partner of the law firm) for being our gracious host again this year. We also thank Shelley Bridges and the Re/Max Bridge Team for sponsoring the party, and Appetite’s Catering (as always) for providing delicious food. Please call the A Little Help offices to find out details or email [email protected].

Paul’s Perspective

Our Chaffee County branch was the first branch to start doing Warm Welcome visits with our new members, and our other branches started implementing it after seeing how successful they were. Our new Chaffee County Coordinator, Sara Ward, reshaped how her branch does their Warm Welcome visits by starting to bring baskets of fresh veggies to their new members! The photo above is from a welcome visit with new members Paul and Kathleen. Kathleen was raised in a home that always grew their own food, and later followed that tradition herself. She grew gardens and preserved her food for years, but with recent sight challenges she is no longer able to do so. Sara said, “Kathleen had some amazing recipes in her kitchen to share with me. She was so appreciative of the fresh tomatoes and said they tasted just like her mama’s tomatoes.”Thanks to Sara and our community in Chaffee County for making this possible!

Colorado Gives Day is also an excellent time to give your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) to your favorite nonprofit. IRS rules require that every person over the age of 70 ½ who has a 401k or IRA must take what is known as a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD).

The required minimum distribution (RMD) for a person who turned 70 1/2 in 2018 (or earlier years) for each $100,000 saved in an IRA or 401k is, at a minimum, about $3300. Unless that person makes a direct donation to a qualified non-profit, they will pay income taxes on that $3300. However, if they direct their plan administrator to instead donate the money directly to a qualified non-profit, they pay no income tax on the RMD amount.

A Little Help is the most efficient and cost effective model for building intergenerational community to fight isolation in older adults. By using a small professional staff to lead a mighty corps of good neighbor volunteers, we are able to help folks with the little things. We are also able to help with the most important thing: connection. Your donations to A Little Help on Colorado Gives Day help us to help more people. Your donations on December 4th also help us help people better.

A Little Help Holiday Parties:

We are blown away by the support we received at our first ever A Little Breakfast Gala. Thank you to Reggie Rivers for hosting, for Lieutenant Governor Donna Lynne and Bob Murphy (State Director, AARP Colorado) for discussing isolation in older adults, to Appetite’s Catering for supplying breakfast, to Maxwell Hughes for playing music, and to every single person who attended the event. We can’t wait to do it again!
