WELCOME TO "Reflect, Rejuvenate, Re-Create"

Jason Thorne - RNB Board President, Town of Sussex

On behalf of Recreation NB Board of Directors and Staff, I would like to welcome you to the 2015 Recreation NB Fall Conference in beautiful St. Andrews, New Brunswick. This year’s theme of "Reflect, Rejuvenate, Re-create" brings sessions that showcase ideas and projects that make us proud to work in the field of recreation. Join us as we explore nature, green spaces, the built environment, sport tourism, physical literacy, best practices, and much more. Don't miss our keynote speakers, Adam Bienenstock, as he takes us through the world of “Natural Playgrounds” and Charlene Shannan-McCallum, who will lead a discussion on "Leisure Literacy - Building Capacity for Recreation Participation".

Wednesday you'll be able to choose from several scenic tours and recreation activities. We invite you to take advantage of our Thursday luncheon, where we will discuss our roles with the national “Framework for Recreation in Canada 2015: Pathways to Wellbeing." This is your opportunity to be part of the provincial/national conversation as we move recreation forward for future generations.

PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION: “Getting Passed the Grown-ups”

This keynote, ‘how to get past the grown-ups’ will focus on barriers that stop us from providing environments that provide settings that challenge and promote optimal child development while connecting to nature within their communities. Learn what to challenge and how to push back to make it work for everyone.

The keynote will continue to focus on connecting children to nature where and when they play. It will cover what a natural playground is, why it is important, the most relevant data and research, and some of the best examples of natural playgrounds from around the world.

PRESENTATION DESCRIPTION: “Developing Leisure Literacy - Building Capacity for Recreation Participation”

Imagine if all individuals in our communities were leisure literate – if they had the capacity to assume responsibility for engaging in positive, satisfying leisure that allowed them to access the benefits of various recreation opportunities that exist. Would communities see more engaged, more connected, more active citizens who were enjoying healthier and happier lives? Certainly they would. This begs the question then, how do recreation and leisure service providers currently develop this capacity in their citizens? And, what might be some innovative ways to further develop this capacity – both in those who already participate and access the benefits of recreation and those who do not?

THURSDAY EVENING KEYNOTE

Dr. Charlene Shannon-McCallum - UNB Faculty of Kinesiology

Charlene Shannon-McCallum has been learning, teaching, or researching about leisure and recreation for over 20 years – more than half that time as a faculty member in the Recreation and Sport Studies degree program at the University of New Brunswick.

Charlene’s research has focused mainly on leisure and youth development, family leisure, and leisure education with most of her research taking place in New Brunswick or Atlantic Canada. Her research has been published in the World Leisure Journal, Leisure Sciences, Journal of Leisure Research, and the Journal of Park and Recreation Administration. She is a member of the steering committee for the World Leisure Commission on Leisure Education, blogs about “All Things Leisure,” and tweets about leisure-related topics @leisurethings.

SESSIO N A The Impact of Sport Tourism on our Communities Garth Millar, Fundy Sports Tourism

Sports tourism is the fastest growing sector of the tourism industry, yet does it get the recognition it deserves despite the hard work of our sport organizers, municipalities and local sponsors? Using the Town of Hampton for the 'Hampton Ladies Only Triathlon' and St. Andrews, home of the 'Challenge St. Andrews' as examples, This session aims to illustrate how we can all work together to develop sport tourism, to extend our seasons, and to improve the economy of our communities.

A) Impact of Sport Tourism on our Local Community - Garth Miccar, Fundy Sports Tourism (Re-create)B) The Recreation Connection to the Medical Field - Andrew McLean, NB Medical Society (Reflect)C) The Rise of the Forest School (Rejuvenate)

The New Brunswick Medical Society has been pursuing different initiatives over the last few years to improve the physical activity levels of youth, to change policies related to healthy living in the province, and to support doctors working on health promotion projects in their communities. During this session, an outline of various initiatives will be given – from writing prescriptions for exercise to the many youth running events hosted in partnership with Run New Brunswick, to advocating for change in food served to children in schools. Learn how doctors are using their practices, and public advocacy ability, for a healthier New Brunswick.

SESSIO N C

Discover how Forest School provides children with an outdoor education experience where they take the lead of their own learning by following their individual interests at their pace through a hands-on, experiential approach. New Brunswick’s Tír na nÓg, the first Forest School in Atlantic Canada, helps children develop confidence, self-esteem and meaningful relationships with the natural world and their community as they engage in play and exercise supported problem-solving and risk taking through long-term exploration of their woodland setting.
