Dear Colleague,Without doubt, 2009 is a year that will be filled with change. The U.S. presidential campaign promised it and even before the new administration takes office on January 20, the whole world is experiencing both positive and negative change.

Yet in our teaching studios, one thing remains constant. Our work as piano teachers continues to have a positive impact on students of all ages—from pre-schoolers to senior citizens and all ages in between. A second thing that remains constant is Alfred’s commitment to bringing you the best in piano teaching materials.

As you look at the new materials featured on the following pages, you will find music that will help you adapt to changes in your students’ lives. Most of today’s students are busier than ever with homework and extra-curricular activities. In addition, they have many choices to

fill free time in their lives—video games and social networks on the computer. Consequently, it is vital that we choose music that will truly appeal to them, while still fostering performance and musical understanding.

To help make your life a little easier, due to teacher requests, Alfred is bringing back its automatic sheet music program, which has been renamed Alfred’s Hot-Off-the-Press Subscription Series and is now better than ever! In addition to offering sheet music solos as a part of the subscription series, duets and recital suites are also available. Members will learn about our new releases and have additional opportunities to buy a reference copy of each new release at introductory pricing. See page 4 for details.

Look for the Editor’s Notes throughout this mini-catalog to help you choose just the right music for every student. The introductory prices on Value Pack materials allow you to preview the latest

publications with substantial savings. These materials can also be found at the finest music stores, and I encourage you to visit and purchase from your local music retailer whenever possible.

All good wishes in the New Y ear,

E. L. LancasterVice President/Keyboard Editor-in-ChiefAlfred Publishing Co., Inc.E. L. Lancaster

Land Between the LakesLand Between the Lakes is a 170,000 acre national recreation area in western Kentucky and northern Tennessee. It was

formed when two parallel rivers, the Cumberland and the Tennessee, were dammed, creating Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley. Visitors can enjoy a living history farm, a nature station, a planetarium, and wildlife, including a bison herd.

Peaceful hiking trails wind through dense forests, meadows, and along the lakeshores.

“ ere’s another favorite of the children,” Clara purred as she rearranged the music on the piano. “I want to see if you know the name of it.” Clara began to play and sing.

Beethoven Bear grew quite excited. “I know, I know!” he exclaimed raising his hand in the air. “We sing in it Sunday school. It’s called This Little Light of Mine.”

“Yes,” Clara replied, “it was written by Harry Dixon Loes in 1920. He was a composer and teacher. Do you know that it is often sung while using hand motions that express the words? I’ve asked Pachelbel Penguin to teach them to you as we sing it together.” Pachelbel stood in front of the music friends, and Clara began to play.

“ like your song, Clara,” Beethoven Bear said. “It’s fun to sing.”“And I like that Jesus had so many friends,” Mozart Mouse said.“Did you know that Jesus helped people wherever He went?” Clara Schumann-Cat asked.

She began to put their snack out on the table. “Once, He even fed thousands of people with only five loaves of bread and two fish. He asked God to bless the food, and as His disciples passed the food around, the food kept multiplying. There was plenty for everyone.”

“I want a friend like that!” Beethoven Bear declared.“You all have a friend in Jesus,” Clara assured them.
