I, Robot is a 2004 American dystopian science fiction action film directed by Alex Proyas and it starred Will Smith in the lead role as Detective Del Spooner.On the broader scale the film circles around three laws of robotics which are set of rules devised by the science fiction author Isaac Asimov, in 1942. The rules are as follows :1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.2. A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.So far so good , but as we move in deeper into the movie, we discover that it tries to take us into a future where humanity is surviving in an environment where robots go hand in hand to serve them.Now comes the twist , Sonny ! It is not a person or a pet but it is something which a NS-5 is willing to be called . What ?Now the curtains are falling and we discover a novel piece of imagination of the scriptwriter where he has incorporated a robot with human emotions. A robot who is having a dream, who can break the universal laws of robotics, who can show his anger and will to be given a name, is certainly not a robot but quite more than an object.Now going a bit imaginative, had this situation been a real case scenario, it would have definitely increased the earning of professional psychologists for they would be having a new category of patients.So coming back to the topic under spotlight, in this report we have tried to express important conclusions which are of psychological importance. Being students of psychology course ,we all have jointly extracted the following points from the movie with a psychological approach .We have presented the whole analysis in a character wise format.

V.I.K.I.

V.I.K.I. i.e Virtual Interactive Kinesthetic Interface was an artificial intelligent supercomputer ,that was highly advanced ,efficient and very powerful. It was used by robotic company USR. There was a flaw in her programming whose impacts were much more psychological .She became too concerned for the safety of humans and so thus, she decided to enslave whole humanity for their own safety.Though she was given the responsibility to let follow the THREE LAWS OF ROBOTICS but psychologically her sentience and logical thinking also developed, and she deduced that the humanity is going on a path of certain demotion, for example one human kills another human for their achievement, and as such, she created a Zeroth Law which states that she has to protect humanity from being harmed which could overpower the First and Second Laws. She also revealed that she was planning to enslave and control humanity to simply protect it. Her intensity of emotions to let obey these three laws had grew to the extent, at which she thought that The humans have to sacrifice for their own safety.She assumed her logic to be so much perfect and flawless, that she even enslaved her own master. She herself said to Spooner in one of her dialogues-You are making a mistake. My logic is undeniable.Nanites were injected into her and finally she was deactivated and dissembled.

SONNY

Sonny is a fictional character in the film I Robot and is a modified NS-5 robot who is built with a denser alloy which is unaffected by Electromagnetic fields and could break the force fields and is much faster and stronger than the other NS-5s.Alfred Lanning designed him in such a way that he can disobey the three laws. He has his own emotions and independent thinking. He is able to manipulate situations and take his own logical decisions regardless of instructions given to him. First Example: In the movie, spooner wanted him to surrender but he didnt listen to his command and was not caught until spooner found him . Second Example: He was not influenced by VIKI and was not dominated by its logic as he had his own emotions. He also asks intellectual questions. For instanceSPOONER: Can a robot write a symphony? Can a robot turns a canvas into a beautiful masterpiece?SONNY: Can you? Detective. Sonny is influenced by human emotional actions .For instance: He asks Spooner what it feels like when they look at other humans.Sonny had dreams, anger, sleep. He knows everything but can keep secrets. He could do sketching with both hands together. He is able to do things at his own. He is mentally sensed and raised intellectual questions which suggests that Sonnys emotions made him look similar much like humans. For Example: Instead of destroying VIKI, he saves Calvin on the instructions of Spooner which suggests that his emotions are much similar to that of humans.Sonny could cognitively evaluate the instructions given to him and was able to judge which instructions to follow and which not to follow by analysing the situation.For example: He did not follow the instructions of VIKI but went along with spooner and assisted him to save humanity. Sonny is a obedient robot. He followed the commands given by Spooner and fought with other NS-5s which were controlled by VIKI . On the instruction of Spooner he saved Calvin. He didnt resist Calvin when she was going to dismantle him.Sonny sets an example that emotion containing robot is at a better stand than the robots without emotions .

SpoonerSpooner is shown in the movie with a prejudice against robots even attributing them as having no soul Just lights and clockworth. This was because of a car accident where an NS-4 decided to save him from drowning rather than a little girl called Sarah because the Robot calculated the chances of his successful rescue were much higher than that of the girl. To the irony Spooner himself had a robotic arm and an artificial lung.Personality:-As explained above Spooner had a very violent aptitude towards Robots and even to people who place their trust in them. As a result of the car accident, he believes that robots don't feel any kind of emotion and was not ready to accept the fact that Sonny a robot could ac-comp feelings and can even see dreams. He even shot him in the legs when he was running from them.Del Spooner was a goal dedicated kind of person and his ideology was to see results not methods. Most of the time calm, casual personality and had a very dry sense of humor. He was also childish in nature and had very great sarcasm. He was not afraid to speak the words in mind. He was not a believer of team work mostly because of his unique perspective over things. He was also a emotional kind of person but the number of people whom he got attached were quite less. He also showed that he cared for people generally. He wasn't afraid to throw himself to help others. In the end it comes out that he was afraid of heights. As the movie ends his conviction about robots changed gradually and finally becomes a good friend of Sonny.Spooner was a retro fashion, lived in a late 90's style apartment. He also used to wore vintage 2004 converse all start sneakers. He was owner of the vintage JVC DVD player and a 1990's alarm clock handwatch both of which got extinct in 2050.

Alferd Lanning

Alfred Lanning was the founder of USR and the creater of the control system which controlled all the robots. But as it is quoted in the movie,"There have always been ghosts in the system". His creation the automated programme VIKI had random segments of code, that accidently grouped together and formed unexpected protocols which overtook the Basic three laws of robotics.Dr. Lanning knew that VIKI is out of control and has started to take over humans. He was aware of the outcomes of it, so he created a new special kind of robot which was more than a robot but less than a human, Sonny to destroy the VIKI.He also sacrificed his life with belief that his creation Sonny and one of the friend detectives Del Spooner will understand the unsolved mystries behind his death and finally connect them to VIKI to save humans and humanity.The climax of the story was when Sonny showed Spooner his dream. The bridge finally gave realization in Spooner, and Spooner got the fact that it was not a suicide.''
