A Little BackgroundMacedonian, born in 356 bce - died 323 bce (age 32). Son of King Philip II. Had a prestigious reputation by the age of 13. We will examine his “Greatness” by looking at 3 definitions of greatness.
Great = AccomplishmentsHistory = Deeds of great men. Bad: 1/2 of history is filled with women. Many historical events take place that no one can take responsibility for. (Black Death) Alexander did do a lot though!
Alexander’s Feats
Destroyed the Persians, conquered entire empire. Headed towards India, stopping around the Indus R. Great general, army had superior tactics/tech (Sarissa). Conqueror, but not an empire-builder.
After his death, the empire broke into 3 kingdoms (Antigonids, Ptolemies, Seleucids).
Great = Impact, After DeathSimilar to King Tut, Alexander is super good at being dead. Military model for various generals after his death. (Napoleon) Introduced the idea of Absolutism to Greco-Roman world. Left behind spectacular cities (most named Alexandria).
Gave the region a common language (Greek). Made a much more connected world. Trade and communication more efficient.
Great = LegendNo accounts of his life written while he lived. Embellishment is a lot easier. Never grew old, never lost battles. Tutored by Aristotle. Chased the Persian King (Darius III) across Iraq and Iran.
