5948 N. Sheridan offers the average tourist a unique sampling of Chi-cago’s cityscape by citing two of the city’s most prominent aspects:

Public green space and the grid plan.

These two aspects are incorporat-ed into the form in a unique way to slightly shift the perspective of the surroundings.

The elevated terrace provides the fa-miliar comfort of a typical park, but frames the cityscape from 12 feet off the ground.

The plan of the hotel echoes Chi-cago’s grid layout as well by shifting it slightly off the north-south axis, creating again a unique yet familiar interaction in the interior as well as with the surrounding cityscape.

The hotel was to consist of 32 guest rooms, a street side restaurant, and a lobby. Private spaces for the hotel management and maintenance crew were also included in the program. Local zoning laws were observed.

Loads transfer logically throughout the build-ing as the hotel is based off of an orthogonal grid.

On the guest room floors, the load is transferred from 6” beams surmounted by 4” concrete floor slabs to 6” load-bearing concrete walls.

On the guest floors, the supply and return ducts stem from a chasse that runs down to the mechanical room with the elevator shaft.

The ducts are channeled throughout the hallway to heat and cool each room.

public to private space through a series of layersle théâtre à la pelure

le 15ème arrondissement PARIS

Partner: Rebecca Anthony

For the first major design assignment, students were to design an urban theater in the 15th district of Paris.

The theater was to include an auditorium with seating for 200 people, a lobby, an exhibition space, a cafe, and an out-door plaza for the public. Additionally, students were responsible for designing various private spaces for actors, staff, and management.

Surrounding the site existed a polariza-tion between public spaces and private spaces. An opaque pignon wall of resi-dential complexes framed the southwest side of the site. The northwest side, however, was left open and bordered by a bank, a restaurant, and access to more public areas including Place d’Alleray, Métro Volontaires, and Gare Montpar-nasse (one of Paris’ largest train stations). Our response to this stratification was to create a theater that takes the visitor on a journey from public space to private space through a series of unraveling layers.

Students were paired off for the duration of the project. Each partner shared an equal role in the design and production process

Page 14: Alex Tsaparis - Architectural Design Portfolio

Roughly translating to “The Peeling Theater,” the form of

le théâtre à la pelure originates from a series of layers

unraveling themselves from the auditorium and cascading

down towards the public plaza. The ascending heights of

the layers, the rhythm of the fenestration, and the hierarchy

of materiality selected all convey a progression from public

to private space.

THE “BOX” PROJECTThis 3D Study challengedstudents to create a composition with everyday objects contained within an 18” x 14” x 6” Box.

This music-themed project incor-porates proportions from various musical scales and is composed of of CDs, records, sound cards, and viola strings.

The final project of the Sophomore Foundations Studio involved the design of a student pavilion on the Quad at the University of Illinois.

The proposed pavilion is comprised of sculptural LCD weatherproof touch screens that serve as digital bulletin boards for the students at the university. Anyone can upload, move, or delete advertisements on the screens, maintaining the checks and balances of standard bulletin boards. Students can upload various types of advertisements to get their message across, including photos, videos, or animations.

The project served as an introduction to responding to a program, and presenting an informative, graphically-compelling proposal.

Students of the University of the Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) were grouped with students from l’Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Versailles (ENSA-V) and were challenged to create a sustainable house in the center of Versailles. Each team member played an equal role in the design and production process. Site analysis proved that it would be effective to angle the house due south and out of surrounding shadows to capitalize on the sunlight for solar energy and natural light. Constructing operable windows and vents on the east and west sides would best capture the westerly winds for air circulation. Enclosing the north, east, and west sides of the house with opaque walls would minimize noise coming from the surrounding streets and the train station.

SOLAR PANELS: the main source of the house’s energy. Photovoltaic

and thermal solar panels line the roof at an angle that achieves 90% efficien-

cy. They provide both heat for water and electricity. The house is divided

into 1m x 5m prefabricated modules that are clipped together on-site with

glulam beams. This eases the construction process and provides versatility.

Water for domestic use is collected and filtered by two gutters. Air circulates

through operable vents and windows which allow for cross and stack ven-

tilation. The facade is lined with a chataignier veneer, a inexpensive, local

wood that insulates well. The insulation itself is made of paper cellulose.

The heat from the sun is collected by a thermal mass in the winter time and

released at night to keep the house at a reasonable temperature.

calls for a user-focused architect capable of unify-ing all design disciplines with the goal of creating functional and inspiring place of healing. While I did play a part in the design process from time to time, my main role as a Design Professional was constructing the 3D BIM models and graphically coordinating with the various disciplines to ensure a cohesive set of design documents.

The works displayed here are the design efforts of multiple in-house architects, engineers, as well as consultants. All renderings were compiled by my-self.

collaborative building image modeling3D Building Image Modeling using software such as Revit takes cross-disciplinary coor-dination to a new level. Parameter-based elements from architecture, engineering, and interiors are linked into one central file which any member of the design team can access and make changes to in real-time. Plans, sections, elevations, schedules, take-offs and details can all be gleaned from the main model.

Overall, this 3D centralization streamlines the design process and minimizes error.
