Alex, the Writer Alex, el escritor

Alex was a writer. A very imaginative writer, if I may say so. But he didn’t feel like he was talented. He had heard many creative people talk about how they felt while they were singing, dancing or painting and they always told him the same thing: that it was like floating. Alex had never experienced this “floating” thing but he kept writing anyway.

Alex era escritor. Era un escritor muy imaginativo, la verdad. Sin embargo, él no pensaba que tuviera talento. Había oído a mucha gente creativa explicar cómo se sentían cuando cantaban, bailaban o pintaban y todos le decían siempre lo mismo: que era como como estar flotando. Alex nunca había experimentado eso de “flotar” pero siguió escribiendo igual.

Su sitio preferido para escribir era el parque. A Alex le encantaba sentarse bajo la fresca sombra de un árbol y observar a toda la gente que iba al parque por las tardes. Se imaginaba todos y cada uno de los aspectos de sus vidas: si les gustaba o no el chocolate, si les gustaba el jazz o si preferían ir a la playa o hacer senderismo por las montañas.

His favourite place to write was the park. Alex loved sitting under the cool shadow of a tree and watch all the people that went to the park in the afternoons. He imagined every single aspect about their lives: whether they liked chocolate or not, if they listened to jazz music or if they preferred going to the beach or hiking mountains.

However, his favourite story that he had ever written was Fred and Lizzie’s. Unlike his other writings, this one was totally real. He liked this tale because it reminded him of his childhood friend, Paula.

No obstante, de todos los relatos que había escrito, su favorito era el de Fred y Lizzie. Al contrario que sus otros cuentos, este era totalmente real. Le gustaba esta historia porque le recordaba a su amiga de la infancia, Paula.

One afternoon, he was in the park sitting under a tree, writing. It seemed like any other day. Alex was very concentrated. He began writing a story about a boy who liked to play with his spinning top named Anton.

Una tarde, él se hallaba en el parque sentado bajo un árbol, escribiendo. Parecía un día cualquiera. Alex estaba muy concentrado. Comenzó a escribir una historia sobre un niño al que le gustaba jugar con su peonza, cuyo nombre era Antón.

Suddenly, Alex started lifting a few feet in the air. He didn’t notice, so he kept writing.

De repente, Alex empezó a elevarse unos centímetros en el aire. No sé dio cuenta, así que siguió escribiendo.

Unos minutos más tarde, sus piernas dejaron de tocar el suelo y empezaron a flotar, pero él aún no se enteraba. A pesar de que su cuerpo subía cada vez más alto, Alex no paró de escribir.

A few minutes later, his legs stopped touching the ground and he began floating, but he still didn’t realise it. Even though his body kept rising higher in the air, Alex didn’t stop writing.

Anton saw him and he decided to tie a string on Alex’s foot so he wouldn’t fly away. Alex was floating so high that it looked like Anton was carrying a balloon.

Antón le vio y decidió atarle un cordel al pie, para que Alex no saliera volando. Alex estaba flotando tan alto que parecía que Antón llevaba un globo.

He was floating so high that the kids who were playing football stopped playing and looked at him in awe while the photographer took photos.

Tan alto flotaba que los niños que estaban jugando al fútbol dejaron de jugar y le miraron boquiabiertos mientras el fotógrafo sacaba fotos.

Anton got scared thinking that Alex would fly away, so he tried to pull him down to the ground.

Antón se asustó pensando que Alex iba a salir volando, así que intentó bajarlo al suelo.

Alex began to descend very slowly as he was finishing the last sentences of his story. He looked around and felt weird. He had not moved but he felt different inside. It was like his mind and body were floating, but that was impossible, right?!

Alex empezó a descender muy despacio mientras terminaba las últimas frases de su historia. Miró a su alrededor y se notó raro. No se había movido, pero se sentía diferente en su interior. Era como si su mente y su cuerpo estuvieran flotando, pero eso era imposible, ¡¿verdad?!

He looked up and saw Anton hanging onto a string that was tied to his foot. He couldn’t believe it! He had actually been floating! Alex finally felt talented. He was so happy that he decided to give the story he had written to Anton and he thanked him for making him float.

Levantó la mirada y vio a Antón agarrando un cordel que estaba atado a su pie. ¡No podía creerlo! ¡Había estado flotando de verdad! Alex por fin sintió que tenía talento. Estaba tan contento que decidió darle la historia que había escrito a Antón y le dio las gracias por haberle hecho flotar.

Alex said goodbye and left.

Alex dijo adiós y se fue.

Anton started reading Alex’s tale, not knowing that one day he would float too.

Antón empezó a leer el cuento de Álex, sin saber que un día él también flotaría.

Suggested Activity: This activity is suggested for an intergenerational Book Club in English, between high school students (12-16 years-old) and elderly participants. Objectives: This activity will focus on the improvement of the participants’ communicating skills (reading, writing, speaking and oral comprehension) in English. It will also be very enriching for the participants on a cultural level; they will share their opinions on each story and compare them. Methodology: In this excercise, the different generations will be separated in groups and read the story out loud. Then, each group will create their own story based on the illustrations given. Finally, each group will read their story and compare, comment and share their thoughts and opinions with the rest of the participants.

Propuesta de actividad: La actividad propuesta está dirigida a un Club de Lectura intergeneracional en inglés, formado por alumnos de instituto (12-16 años) y participantes de la tercera edad. Objetivos: Esta actividad se centrará en la mejora de las capacidades comunicativas (leer, escribir, hablar y escuchar) en lengua inglesa. También será muy enriquecedora para los participantes a nivel cultural; compartirán sus opiniones sobre cada historia y las compararán. Metodología: En este ejercicio, las diferentes generaciones se separarán en grupos y leerán la historia en alto. Después, cada grupo creará su propia historia basada en las ilustraciones dadas. Finalmente, cada grupo leerá su historia en alto y comparará, comentará y compartirá sus ideas y opiniones con el resto de participantes.
