Granvi l le Is land Sector StudyARSC 7001 - Foundation Studio Fall term 2012

Johnston Street - Granville Island, Vancouver B.C.Team: David Gordon, Riley Syjuco & Alex Raymundo

Granvi l le I s land has been a pr imary at t rac t ion for any locale and tour is t s people in Vancouver. The man made is land consis t s of tour is t a t t rac t ing act iv i t ies that i s very a l ive and v ibrant . The is land gives people great phys ical exper ience and a breathe of f resh ai r .

The in ten t of the s i te s tudy is to observe thoroughly the act iv i t ies and the character of the sector provided by the ins t ruc tor . David, R i ley and I were ass igned to inves t igate Sector 4 which is on Johns ton St reet a long the Publ ic Market . We did several s i te v is i t s and pro -duced sketches to capture the main characters t ic of the sector. Through a ser ies of inves t igat ion and compi la -t ion of ideas, our group produced a rendered s i te p lan that we th ink bes t descr ibes Sector 4.

The market dis t r ic t i s eminent ly v ibrant and diverse. The market mesmer izes tour is t s and locals a l ike. They bus t le in and out dai ly, en ter ing the

space ei ther for p leasure or to exper ience the water f ron t . Without the populace and thei r cur ios i ty to inves t igate the market , th is space would

be a colour fu l col lec t ion of t in faced boxes. There is a fee l ing of h is tory, of cu l tu re that res ides on the is land wi th the water f ron t bui ld ings,

h is tor ical ly being an impor tant par t o f Vancouver ’s growth. The bones of the is land can be fe l t , under foot , f rom the uneven pavers and hidden

rai l road t racks. When you look up and see th is mass ive s tee l p la t form in the sky, you can almos t hear the i ronworkers work ing. This s igni f icance

can be bes t descr ibed as cont ro l led chaos, not wi thout a purpose but chaos in i t s pr imal s ta te of disorder. To inhabi t and navigate th is space

you mus t be able to cont ro l the chaos, a t leas t for a whi le.

Johnston Street - Granville Island, Vancouver B.C.

The projec t cal l s for a shel ter des ign for Gavin, a s t randed Kayaker in Granvi l le I s land. The s i te locat ion is in re la t ion to the sector s tudy in which each s tudent mus t f ind an empty locat ion for the shel ter to be bui l t .

The projec t in ten t i s to have a minimal is t ic approach. Each e lement mus t be designed in accordance to the c l ien t needs - noth ing more, noth ing less. Several fac -tors were cons idered as wel l dur ing the design process such as l igh t and the kayak s torage. L ight was impor t -an t because the chosen s i te i s r igh t under Granvi l le Br idge which overshadows the s i te every hour of the day. Sky l igh ts were incorporated to le t Nor thern l igh t in. The 16 f t long kayak mus t a lso have a s torage for Gavin to p lace i t a f ter use. Because of the t igh t space of the bui ld ing locat ion, the Kayak is to be placed hanging under the f loor assembly.

The main facade is facing the south side and is fully ex-posed to the sun’s extreme heat gain. A deep overhang provides the building from passive solar protection during the summer and allows solar heat gain in the winter.

The approach also serves as an extension to the vast nature pro-viding an experience for visitors to feel the natural beauty of the surroundings.

The existing Arc is used as a stopover and a meeting place before arriving to the building.

Burkevi l le Community CenterARSC 7100 - Studio Winter term 2013

Burkeville Community, Richmond B.C.

Burkevi l le Communi ty represents the “ t rue neighborhood” in the lower main land. I t i s a f r iendly warm fami ly or ien t -ed communi ty that has a l l the ameni t ies that responds to th is communi t ies ’ needs. There are several annual events happen here such as Hal loween Mini Theme Park, the avi -a t ion - themed F l igh t Path Park that the k ids love and Burkev -i l le Daze in the summer where there is a l ive band, fashion show, movie n ights and more. The cent ra l park in Burkevi l le has been the locat ion of these events ever s ince the town was es tabl i shed in 1943.

Chal lenges were obvious based on the locat ion of the s i te. Burkevi l le i s 3 k i lomters away f rom YVR in ternat ional ai r -por t which means the f l igh t path is very c lose by. Ai rp lane engines imposes very loud sound in t imes of depar ture and ar r iva ls a lmos t every hour in the communi ty. Burkevi l le i s a lso a wel l es tabl i shed communi ty that s t r ives on i t s own, therefore i t i s impor tant to make sure fu tu re developments wi l l not s ta in but ra ther improve the sense of communi ty wi th in Burkevi l le.

The Communi ty Center wi l l be the corners tone of Burkevi l le and wi l l ho ld the annual events. I t wi l l a lso be a locat ion for smal l ac t iv i t ies such as yoga, karate, chaperoned eve-n ings out for youths, adul t evenings and many more.

The design in ten t of th is projec t i s to create an in teract ive communi ty center in the middle of Burkevi l le Park to serve the communi ty of Burkevi l le. There are three th ings to be considered dur ing the design process: In t roduce new ex -per iences through i t s f la t landscape, respect the cent ra l axis of the s i te by rear ranging the roads and encourage a sus tainable des ign to achieve a dis t inc t ident i ty but not to undermine the presence of the town.
