While exploring Red Hook, Brooklyn, one may encounter various unsettling spatial moments. Abrupt changes in building scale evoke one’s perception and awareness of the unique surroundings. This heightened recognition stimulates curiosity and sparks the imagination. By exaggerating proportion and playing with scale, a creative oasis is formed. Alice is a mixed-use complex that blurs the line between fantasy and reality in order to create a wonderland of innovation. Inspired by the area’s thriving nurseries, a series of barrel-like residential towers are connected to woodworking and digital fabrication spaces with a tapestry of nature. By seamlessly fusing these living and working spaces together, residents will be able to interact with nature at multiple scales, further distorting existence.

The ground plane is an important part in establishing the overall feeling of the site. The pushing and pulling of various areas allow for underground programmatic spaces to be accessible.
A woodworking warehouse, digital fabrication studio, and a bicycle repair shop are all nestled underneath the undulating plane, as well as an underground parking facility.
Various paths and walkways allow residents and visitors to interact with the surrounding gardens and nature in an intimate way, providing an overall surrealistic experience.

The residential towers offer studio through 3 bedroom layouts for potential residents to choose from. Located on the outer rings of the structures, these units offer outstanding views of Red Hook as well as Liberty Island and the rest of the Upper Bay.
A core of circulation elements houses an elevator and spiraling staircase, and allows these towers to soar high above the site below. The floor plates are anchored to this core, allowing for large and expansive spaces for residents to live in.
An open-air rooftop garden caps the top of these two towers, providing yet another unique way for residents to experience nature within their own living spaces. Trees and other plants create a light and serene atmosphere to relax and take in the beautiful views of New York City.

The overall tower design was inspired by the blooming flowers of Red Hook’s many nurseries. When photographed from below, flowers seem to soar high above the ground - creating a wonderland for the senses.
By fusing this concept with traditional barrel construction techniques - the whimsical forms of Alice can be assembled. Steel compression rings help resist the outward forces applied on the wood glulam beams from the core.
Angled columns not only add to the playful feeling of form, but also stabilize the towers by anchoring them into the ground. They help blur the lines between indoor and outdoor space by creating a covered vestibule below the towers.
