    Office for territorial reconfiguration

Founded in 2003 and based in Paris, AWP operates on an interdisciplinary platform with a focus on the state of contemporary territories. AWP responds to both public and private commissions that involve architecture, strategic planning, and research (experimentation and teaching) in France and internationally. Our engagement with the built environment has led to a variety of projects involving innovative buildings, urban planning, public spaces, atypical architectural programs, and interventions on complex sites.

With these practices, AWP engages as architect and urban planner in Geneva, London, Basel, Lausanne, Naples, La Dfense, Orly, and Paris.

    Research via experimental processes

AWP has performed research projects that cultivate innovative and adaptive solutions through multidisciplinary and international expertise. Our projects only differ in terms of context and scale but they all share the same values and visions: hospitality, beauty, an innovative confrontation between symbol and uses and a renewed relationship between architecture and landscape.

This research via experimental processes has produced temporary urban installations and research studies in collaboration with institutions and universities. A unique relationship developed through the intersection of different scales and diverse contexts that ultimately shapes the city. In observing this relationship, the office meticulously explores new and relevant forms of interventions to address extreme scales and unstable territories. Through various modes of investigations, this methodology allows for observation and dissection of the city.

The fundamental quality of the studio is to give significance to the combination and synergy of skills. As such it expands the profile of interdisciplinary and international collaborators and vigorously responds to contemporary challenges.

The life of the studio is constantly moving between operational practices and research activities whilst aiming towards a hybrid of the two approaches.

Evidence of this interaction is revealed in ongoing projects. In La Dfense CBD, AWP was selected by Defacto to lead and develop a 160 ha master plan for the urban spaces of the business district and their transformations for the next 20 years (notably by interventions above and below ground). Additionally, AWP was chosen by the EPADESA to develop the 70,000 sqm of public spaces in the Jardins de lArche district in Nanterre and Puteaux comprising of a series of buildings and follies.

In Carrires-sous-Poissy, AWP is the representative of a project of public buildings (museum, floating restaurant, observatories) and a dozen of small buildings and follies along the Seine. At Crissier, located west of Lausanne, the studio recently won a competition to design the master plan and construct a new addition to the city a 85,000 sqm site with housing, public amenities, a school, a hotel, as well as the development of a large urban park.

AWP is frequently selected for international competitions by invitation. The office has been published in Le Monde, Libration, The New York Times, Wallpaper, Archithse, and their work has been incorporated into permanent collections of museums such as the Cit dArchitecture et du Patrimoine (Paris), the Museum of Modern Art (New York), and the MAXXI - National Museum of the 21st Century Arts (Rome). The three partners are regularly invited to give lectures on their projects in France and globally.

  • De-teRRItoRIALIzAtIon: ARChIPeLAgo oF eXIStIng The 1990s radicalized a trend towards spatially dividing the functions of the city separating business strategies from infrastructure and from the struggle between modes of living and mobility. It resulted in spatial and social situations of unplanned states an urban condition characterized by ones perception, uses and symbols. To begin a project, one must understand these conditions materially and emotionally, and with this condition in mind, determine a method to utilize.

ReCognIzIng MoDeRn heRItAge (zonIng, InFRAStRuCtuRe, SLABS, SoCIAL houSIng)Projects of urban transformation often inherit the planning standards established by our predecessors; these have shaped the present scales of city density. How does one re-modernize these factors instead of declaring them inept or inappropriate? What if large programs had the ability to attend to what the territory needs: a link between the preexisting and forthcoming developments? A translation that includes a new vocabulary towards new priorities is necessary to tackle this.

SuStAInABILIty At the teRRItoRIAL LeveL: AMBIguItIeS oF AutonoMySustainability outlines for buildings appear to be ostensibly clear; however contradictions surface when urban scales are projected through such parameters. An alternative would be to propose across intelligence of urban processes to avoid anecdotal typologies that masks or amplifies those contradictions. Indeed, making autonomous urban forms (eco-towns) has only further amplified segregation.

PARtICIPAtIon: neW goveRnAnCe PRojeCtSUrbanism is also faced with the crisis of democratic processes. Its application often results in mediocre outcomes rather than projects reaching their full potential. Introducing participation at an earlier stage throughout the process even in construction could provide more productive narratives. A conception of project management as parallel scenario can further benefit projects and produce reoccurring open processes.

AttRACtIveneSS AnD teRRItoRIAL IDentIty: FRoM MARketIng to ShAReD CuLtuReThe focus is being shifted from the nations-states to the cities where the appeal of these intensity clusters has become a key strategy for employment/housing/training. Richard Florida, economist and social scientist, identified a new socioeconomic class creative classes which outlined culture as the driving force of development in cities. In Europe, the issue of identity manifests in a tension between marketing and culture. It is in the success of social manifestations, such as Nuit Blanche, Lille 3000 or Estuaires, that mark a new vision of culture to develop cities with its inhabitants.

neW MeDIA, neW PRACtICeSA significant portion of our actions and relationships occurs in the virtual sphere where the notion of territory is undermined, and all the while enriches hybridization. This emphasizes a challenge to call into question public space as a place, or rather as network of possibilities. Similarly, competitive intelligence can be considered in the urban sphere by new access to knowledge in networks and its potential value. What is a campus in such context? A strategy to rematerialize.

This project has been widely published and exhibited worldwide and was nominated for the Mies Van der Rohe prize 2009.

When Stavanger was chosen as cultural capital of Europe 2008, the Norwegian Wood competitions were launched to promote innovative architecture contributing to make the region an international showcase for innovation and sustainable architecture. This sculptural canopy in wood and glass aims at revitalizing the area, and creating a place where many different activities could

take place: a meeting point, markets, informal concerts and other happenings. A place able to shelter, invite and invent more social events. Since the site is visible from afar, the Lantern was to be experienced from distance and reveal the square. Our ambition was to create a manifesto for public space design : not just a decoration, but an urban strategy.

This public Lantern aimed at providing a space where to enjoy light and weather changes if nothing else takes place. The proposal used the iconographic shape of and old wooden house. By the redefinition of its traditional construction and by making it glow in the dark, a new landmark for the city was created.

The Lantern proposal displays an open roof of such dimension that it becomes the symbol of the city. This roof is the motive of a house shell: a symbol of the old city upscaled to the new citys dimensions, dealing with the Norwegian wood ancient architecture motives to design a contemporary object.

rooF structure As well as having an iconographical and recognizable shape, the roof provides an ever-changing experience for the daily passers by. The roof stretches out to capture the sun; light is filtered through the depth and translucency of the structure. In rainy weather rolling clouds are reflected in the glass. At night, the whole pavilion glows like a lantern. An abstract and lightweight sensation is achieved through the uniform structure, where there is no division between primary and secondary elements. It is a double grid made solely of 90 x 90 mm wood members. Where needed, additional elements are added within the system. The material of the roof construction is laminated pine with steel reinforcement in the joints.

Glass Panels The glass panels are mounted in an overlapping pattern, as in a traditional slate roof. The overlap incorporates eventual movement between the panels. This allows the glass to be mounted directly onto the wooden structure, avoiding the typical steel profiles and substructure. A translucent pattern is printed on the panels, to both capture the light, and let it through to play in the wooden structure beneath. A light, abstract feeling is achieved, adding to the depth and reflection qualities of the whole.

columns The roof is held up by four groups of columns, creating a flexible space, open for different interpretations and activities. The columns are individual and sculptural, and in contrast to the simple shape of the roof, create different informal spaces. In some places the columns turn into benches when meeting the ground. The columns are withdrawn from the edge of the roof, both to be protected from the rain, but also to blur the sensation of when the users are covered or not.

With inspiration from gothic principles, the continuity of the structure is shown from the ground to the roof. The material is massive oak with steel reinforcement in the joints.

Ground The ground has been designed as a carpet offering the base for the most varied uses. This carpet is made of different samples of resistant concretes, based on different ways of building in this climate.

The Lantern has been filmed and presented as an exemplary project at the Norwegian Wood Conference in 2008, has been exhibited at the Oslo Museum of Architecture and at the Fondazione MAXXI in Rome, where it was acquired in 2013 for their permanent collection. The Lantern has been nominated for the Mies Van der Rohe prize in 2009. It has been widely published internationally in magazines and books, and as been the object of a monographic book: Brre Skodvin, As Built 06: Lanternen (Pax Forlag, Oslo, 2013).

Most importantly, the feedback from the Municipality of Sandnes and from its inhabitants, the actual users of the Lantern, has been extremely positive. Intensively inhabited, the Lantern has become a familiar object and a reference for its users, symbolizing a new convivial way to live the public realm - unusual, in a northern country.

AWP was commissioned to provide design and implementation guidance for La Defense Central Business District. The objective was to conceive a new strategic master plan for the entire site (161 hectares) that addressed issues of public space green space, urban infrastructure, circulation, transportation and site evolution

specifically as they relate to the 30 hectare slab.

ThE ChALLENgE of ThE SLAbThe project at La Defense is most strongly defined by its programmatic and spatial complexity. This is especially evident in the multileveled nature of circulation, infrastructure, and occupiable space. What appears on the surface as just a slab, is in fact, just a small part of a larger system. The slab, functioning as a hybrid ground, serves at once as the pedestrian walkway, a roof to 6 stories of underground infrastructure, and a wall to surrounding streets all the while floating above a transportation hub. In this way, it epitomizes the relationship between landscape, architecture, and infrastructure. In response, a set of guidelines

  • proposed by AWP reimagines the slab as a key connector in the site instead of a barrier, maximizes efficient use of the space in, on, and around the slab, and develops a holistic vision for a new cultural and programmatic culture on the site. The new plan strategically links Paris to the CDB, strengthens connections to the surrounding neighborhood, and integrates the underground transportation. The guidelines create a framework under which the CBD can build new towers, remodel extant commercial properties, design spaces for exercise and cultural events, install a network of green and open spaces, expand infrastructure and transportation, and evolve planning structures over the next 20

years. This plan also envisions the long-term evolution of the site and identifies possibilities to extended infrastructure to adjacent neighborhoods. Guiding principles for design include: redefining the ground (through interventions on the slab), reestablishing the grand axis, inhabiting in-between spaces, allowing for a natural invasion, and incorporating shared spaces.

to formulate the relationship between vertical and horizontal territories, a new design strategy is proposed. The surface is cut through, subterranean parts are day-lighted, visual connection is established, and circulation systems are added.

The vision is that in the future, the underground can function as more than a transition route to other destinations, but rather become a destination in itself, a meeting place, and a place for programmed activities.

EXPLoRINg ThE UNDERgRoUNDBeneath La Defense lay several train and metro lines (metro line 1, rEr A), a highway (A14 route), and a large number of parking as well, but there is little character to these spaces. The plaza is envisioned as the central hub of the project, connecting people to all aspects of their life at La Defense: interface to parking, link to work, access to the stadium, cinema or shopping centre. Multileveled systems pose a number of serious challenges and opportunities for design. On the one hand semisubmerged roadways contribute to a safe and pedestrian-oriented central plaza, yet permeability between levels is often weak. In order

  • Thus, this axis is the medium to penetrate the greater richness of the site and, in this way La Defense can serve as a model for exploiting the full potential of the underground. In response to this challenging condition of the site, it was necessary to develop the theme of depth in a rather literal sense: creating places for living within the areas now used for parking. Through site analysis and spatial reconfiguring, we were able to re-find 100,000 square meters of underused spaces in between buildings and between level changes that have great potential to link important locations. As part of the interventions first goals,

the potential value of the underground network at La Defense is developed to a maximum extent particularly as it serves as the interface between subterranean parking, metro lines, and the elevated walkway that links office buildings.

  • PRoJECT PhASESThe first phase of the project included analysis and a site diagnostic evaluation. The diagnostic phase was comprised of analysis that resulted in a series of data maps. In the case of plan guide public areas of La Defense, this phase was essential for the understanding of the site. The first task of the study was to create a system of representation, to compile an atlas of public spaces, and gather unpublished data owned by different actors on the site. A series of walking workshops were conceived as a new way to generate knowledge from the site`s operational actors:

Defacto, employees and residents, and other visitors to achieve a sensitive experiential mapping of the visit. These steps helped us read the site and break it down into programmatic typologies and a set of targeted interventions. After the diagnostic phase, a general program was established based on our five principles.

The five principles set out in order of importance were grouped under the title Towards A Climate. This phase was essential to the understanding of the site and also for producing 10 themed books which outlined the different layers of public space of La Defense.

Defacto has already begun important work to simplify and improve access for road users and pedestrians, upgrade car parking, install a new signaling system on the plaza, a new lighting plan and unify wayfinding, street fittings and advertising signs.

The site, located near the future Arena 92 in the Jardins de lArche neighborhood, serves as a space for genuine interchange between La Dfense and Seine-Arche. The urban planners and designers at AWP are also responsible for a guide plan for Defacto that will enhance the urban space of La Dfenses business district.

The project site is spatially very complex. The A14 route, metro line 1 and the RER A run underground, while above ground are the existing Jardins de lArche landscape project and Jetty. The aim is for the scheme to support the upcoming urban planning changes to the neighborhood: Terrasses de Nanterre, the Arena 92 stadium,

    residences and hotels.

Each element of the Jardins de lArche project, which covers approximately 70,000 sqm and includes a ramp nearly 750 m-long, contributes to an improved urban experience. The continuous and fluid ramp allows for a more fluid space, while the extensive garden encourages a re-thinking of the existing landscape as a sanctuary, a place that should be protected. New follies, multi-purpose spaces and small-scale buildings increase and activate the possible uses of the site.

A MAJOR GRAND PARIS SITEThe principal objective is to create an architectural, urban and landscaping continuity between the newly developed and existing urban spaces.

Central to the project are the following goals: recreate an exceptional urbanity on a neglected site between the Terrasses of Seine-Arche and La Dfense; create an attractive and lively space on the scale of the Parisian metropolis; generate an urban culture and communication between La Dfense and the surrounding neighborhoods; reinforce the ties between this area and the heart of the city, by improving circulation and fluidity; reveal and give new value to the inherent architecture within a harmonious urban landscape.

This is one of Le Grand Pariss major public urban spaces. The main priority is that the site creates a link between two sections of the Seine, asserting its presence at their meeting point. This linking superceeds any private or local issues about the space and perhaps even influences the way these issues are addressed. We approached the site by feeling it out in its nocturnal aspect, searching for a new intensity of landscape that can become a key image for Le Grand Paris.

  • le pavillon de sport abritera une grande piscine publique, un centre de fitness-spa et un restaurantthe sports pavilion will host a wide swimming pool, a fitness center-spa and a restaurant

We are approaching the project as one might approach a place de lOpra: Arena 92 is a new type of concert hall. The site is, however, full of constraints, because of its exiguity, the presence almost on site of two signature heritage works (Gilles Clment, Paul Chemetoff & Marc Mimram), and because of the huge number of visitors expected.

A part of the design then may be virtual, a luminous, sensitive, interactive, temporary presence

Our vision is to develop spatial continuity with as few individual elements as possible, to bring the numerous small urban projects into an integrated, harmonious and stimulating whole (3): a large, contemporary plaza; flux zones that highlight the Jetty and the Jardin de lArche; and a common vocabulary across the project, such as spatial and temporal modularity in kiosks and follies, that makes the area accessible to all.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION As a strong link between La Defense and Seine-Arche, the Jardins de lArche are located at the point where multiple neighborhoods meet: La Defense to the east, Les Groues and the Faubourg de lArche to the north, the park Andre Malraux to the south and, to the west, the Terrasses that extend Pariss historic axis to the Seine. On a site that covers eight hectares, this new neighborhoods development benefits from the construction of Arena 92, a multipurpose stadium, destined to become a center of urban life that offers a venue for the hospitality industry, residences and ground level space intended for leisure activities and urban services.

The Etablissement public damenagement de La Defense Seine Arche (EPADESA, Public Establishment in Charge of the Development of La Defense Seine Arche) heads the studies and implementation of one of the major urban projects of the Parisian West. The 564-hectare perimeter of the Operation dIntert National (OIN, National Interest Operation) includes the cities of Courbevoie, Garenne-Colombes, Nanterre and Puteaux. The fact that this site encompasses Europes premier business district, which is due for regeneration and of the Seine Arche renovation and development project, accounts for the high level of national interest. The latter project, which is structured around 20 terraces that will extend the historic axis, is already under way. This area is intended to become home to future transportation infrastructures: Grand Paris Express, LGV train station for the Normandy lines and the continuation of Eole to the west.

    Si le parc est plac sous une symbolique fluviale, la typologie prsente sur site des maisons-bateaux, barges et cabanes de pche simpose : modes de construction immergs dans cette nature. Nous dessinons un processus dhybridation entre ces modles flottants et larchtype de la maison de banlieue;

The series of pavilions with different public functions and programs are part of a future 113 hectare large public green space along the Seine river, in Carrires-Sous-Poissy, at the end station of the RER line A and close to the renown Villa Savoye from Le Corbusier. The Park designed by the Paris based landscape architects Agence TER will be a public park and ecological showcase for local residents and a leisure destination for people living in and around Paris.

The competition brief included the construction of a visitors center, of a restaurant (guinguette), of an observatory plus about a dozen smaller infrastructure follies with different uses.

Similar to the popular wooden preschool toys in form of building blocks made out of colorful wood, this collection of pavilions and small infrastructure follies is based on a modular wood system, repeating and combining different sizes and angled timber frames. This approach allows for interesting and unusual constructions, enabling a wide range of possible variations with a very limited number of elements, while at the same time staying very flexible for future adaptions and during the construction phase. This will result in unique atmospheres and spaces for each of the pavilions and infrastructure follies. In addition to that, its a relatively low priced construction method enables the integration of local building know how and local companies.

The site of the project is an exceptional one, for its location along the Seine river and for its in-between, dual nature (land/water, city/sprawl, wilderness/domesticated nature). The presence of barges, fishing huts and houseboats, which have been so far inhabiting the site has been a powerful source of inspiration. On the other side, the site boundary is characterized by suburban nondescript housing pavilions.

The design springs from a process of hybridization between these two existing habitat models: the floating barge and the archetypical suburban house resulting in a new typology emerging in the park and dealing with the sites memory and identity both spatially and socially, whilst providing a contemporary and forward-looking response.

By working along residential neighborhoods and along the river, we are invited by this project to come inhabit a large urban room worthy of Paris tradition of great terraced boulevards. This very active strip of land is made up of continuous docks, a large mooring space for barges, pontoons, lookouts, observatories, cantilevered terraces

These small, furtive constructions must stimulate the flow of people over the entire length of the park, and towards the water and city, as well as provide facilities for viewing the landscape: framing/unframing. They will bring an inspirational atmosphere, to encourage new experiences. We want to suggest windows for

sharing this new kind of landscape, and bring the surrounding city to life by intensifying certain elements of the landscape plan: inscribe it within an urban strategy. The idea is to create conditions for viewing the space, to allow crossovers that are adapted to the buildings uses, users, to the evolution of their surroundings.

As part of the primary intents, the architectural intervention allows visitors to view the existing park and Paris from multiple vantage points, to accommodate a new range of uses, and to evolve with the surroundings over time.
