Job says to God: "My ears had heard about you, but now my eyes have seen you. 6 Therefore, I relent and find comfort on dust and ashes." (vv. 5-6, CEB) The prophet Jeremiah, for example, calls for repentance this way: "My people, put on funeral clothes and roll in ashes" (Jeremiah 6:26). The prophet Daniel pleaded for God this way: "I then turned my face to my Lord God, asking for an answer with prayer and pleading, and with fasng, mourning clothes, and ashes." (Daniel 9:3). Just prior to the New Testament period, the rebels fighng for Jewish independence, the Maccabees, prepared for bale using ashes: "That day they fasted and wore sackcloth; they sprinkled ashes on their heads and tore their clothes" (1 Maccabees 3:47; see also 4:39). Other examples are found in several other books of the Bible including, Numbers 19:9, 19:17, Jonah 3:6, Mahew 11:21, Luke 10:13, and Hebrews 9:13. Ezekiel 9 also speaks of a linen-clad messenger marking the forehead of the city inhabitants that have sorrow over the sins of the people. All those without the mark are destroyed. Each year Ash Wednesday marks the start of a 40-day period which is an allusion to the separaon of Jesus in the desert to fast and pray. During this me he was tempted. Mahew 4:1-11, Mark 1:12-13, and Luke 4:1-13. While not specifically instuted in the Bible text, the 40-day period of repentance is also analogous to the 40 days during which Moses repented and fasted in response to the making of the golden calf. (Jews today follow a 40-day period of repenng during the High Holy Days from Rosh Chodesh Elul to Yom Kippur.) For these reasons and the opportunity to apply them to ourselves, we gather on Ash Wednesday for a service of ashes. This service was held in community at Chester Bethel UMC on February 25. We connue to observe an atude of prayer and repentance throughout the Lenten season which is the 40 days from Ash Wednesday unl Easter but does not include the Sundays along the way. Each Sunday is considered a “lile” Easter. The season comes toward its conclusion as we encounter Palm Sunday followed by Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. We’ll be at Hillcrest Bellefonte UMC for worship at 7 p.m. on Maundy Thursday and then here at Aldersgate at 7 p.m. for Good Friday. I hope you’ll put these important dates on your calendar. I promise you that if you’ll fully immerse yourself in the season of Lent that your Easter morning celebraon will be remarkably joyous. Grace and Peace, Pastor Chris

e umc Why the Ashes?

As I was surfing Facebook one day recently, there was a very lively discussion among clergy colleagues about Ash Wednesday and the marking of individuals with ashes and the need or lack thereof to be in community when doing so. I figured if some of my colleagues are wrestling with the whole concept, perhaps there’s a member or two at Aldersgate wondering about the day and the practice as well. So here’s some information so you can wrestle with it, too.

Ash Wednesday is a day of repentance and it marks the beginning of Lent. Ashes were used in ancient times, according to the Bible, to express mourning. Dusting oneself with ashes was the penitent's way of expressing sorrow for sins and faults. An ancient example of one expressing one's penitence is found in Job 42:3-6. The prophet Daniel pleaded for God this way: "I then turned my face to my Lord God, asking for an answer with prayer and pleading, and with fasting, mourning clothes, and ashes." (Daniel 9:3). Just prior to the New Testament period, the rebels fighting for Jewish independence, the Maccabees, prepared for battle using ashes: "That day they fasted and wore sackcloth; they sprinkled ashes on their heads and tore their clothes" (1 Maccabees 3:47; see also 4:39).

Other examples are found in several other books of the Bible including, Numbers 19:9, 19:17, Jonah 3:6, Matthew 11:21, Luke 10:13, and Hebrews 9:13. Ezekiel 9 also speaks of a linen-clad messenger marking the forehead of the city inhabitants that have sorrow over the sins of the people. All those without the mark are destroyed.

Each year Ash Wednesday marks the start of a 40-day period which is an allusion to the separation of Jesus in the desert to fast and pray. During this time he was tempted. Matthew 4:1-11, Mark 1:12-13, and Luke 4:1-13. While not specifically instituted in the Bible text, the 40-day period of repentance is also analogous to the 40 days during which Moses repented and fasted in response to the making of the golden calf. (Jews today follow a 40-day period of repenting during the High Holy Days from Rosh Chodesh Elul to Yom Kippur.)

For these reasons and the opportunity to apply them to ourselves, we gather on Ash Wednesday for a service of ashes. This service was held in community at Chester Bethel UMC on February 25. We continue to observe an attitude of prayer and repentance throughout the Lenten season which is the 40 days from Ash Wednesday until Easter but does not include the Sundays along the way. Each Sunday is considered a “little” Easter. The season comes toward its conclusion as we encounter Palm Sunday followed by Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. How to Have a Daily Devotional Time

From The Upperroom.org, Submitted by Sarah Ogilby

The phrases "doing devotions" or "having devotions" may

sound foreign or weird. These phrases are simply ways people

describe spending time with God by reading the Bible (and

other Christian literature) and praying. Why bother to read

the Bible and pray? Why is having a regular time with God

important? We spend time with God in order to deepen and

strengthen our relationship with the One who created us and

yearns to be with us.

But because we are all different and each of us has a unique

relationship with God, no one devotional pattern will work for

everyone. And no one way works for anyone all of the time.

Experiment until you find the time of day, content, and length

of time spent that helps you feel connected with God.

BASIC PATTERN

Begin your devotional time by quieting yourself. Take a

few deep breaths and become still. Some people light a

candle or say a simple prayer such as, "O God, open my

heart to hear your message to me in the words I read."

Then read a short passage in the Bible and some

additional reading. A resource such as The Upper Room

can guide you in choosing scripture passages, and its

witness from other believers can help you connect the

words of the Bible with concerns of everyday life.

At the end of your reading time, be silent and wait to see

what words, feelings, or images rise in your heart or tug at

your thoughts. Notice what situations or people come to

mind.

Consider how the words or images connect with your life;

then pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help you to see what

God may be saying to you through what you have read,

thought, and felt.

Say a prayer, asking God to help you follow the guidance

you have received and to be with the people who came to

mind during your reading and reflection.

You may want to record your thoughts and feelings in a notebook or journal, to help you remember what God has been saying to you. Many people find it helpful to write about concerns and to write a prayer as a way to end their devotional time. If you are just beginning to take time for reading the Bible and praying, plan to spend about ten minutes. As you become more comfortable with the process, you may find yourself spending a longer time.

OTHER IDEAS TO HELP YOU

Start small. Use a resource such as The Upper Room that provides short, daily readings and guides you to look at small portions of scripture. Don't start off planning to spend 30 or 45 minutes.

Keep it manageable. Don't set impossible goals such as reading an entire chapter of the Bible three times a day, every day. Choose a discipline that you can stick with.

Look for help. If you are unfamiliar with the Bible, put a bookmark in the contents page of the Bible you use so you can turn there to find where each book begins. This will save time and help you avoid frustrated searching for a particular reading. If you need help finding something to read that "speaks" to you, ask people at church for suggestions of what they have found helpful.

Find a spiritual "buddy." Ask a friend, co-worker, or someone at church to become your devotions partner. Then, each day, call or e-mail one another to discuss what you have read and what connections you make between the reading and your concerns.

Remember the value of having a pattern. Finding a regular time and place to read the Bible and the day's meditation in The Upper Room helps most people be more consistent in turning their hearts to God. Regularity can become a rhythm that comforts, and having a familiar time and place may help you to settle into God's presence more easily.

Remember the value of being flexible. Doing exactly the same things in the same way can become stale over time. If events in your day interfere with your usual pattern, find another time to read and reflect, or turn your mind to God by singing a Christian song. Don't let a pattern control you and cause you discomfort. The point is to spend time with God, not to do this in a particular way.

Be creative. Try something new from time to time. Here are some possibilities: Read your meditation outside. Write your prayers in a journal. Take a "prayer walk" with the intent of looking for God, and pray in response to the people and situations that come to mind as you walk. Listen to Christian music and talk to God about what it brings to mind.

The most important thing to remember as we try to grow closer to God is that God is already reaching out to us. God is the one who gives us the desire to grow, and God wants us to grow. We just keep showing up, even when we don't particularly feel holy or loving or eager. And we can trust that if we do so, God will show up, too.

Heart, While We Wait, Breaking and Mending, and The Lord's Prayer.

March Update

By Don Moore, President

Board of Trustees

A first at Aldersgate! Your Lead Team, with urging from PG&M, Finance, Trustees and Pastor Chris have established a Capital Reserve Fund utilizing a very generous bequest from Helen Lingo. Capital Reserve Fund: The Fund is to provide money for large expenditures necessary to keep Aldersgate’s assets operational, up-to-date and able to fill ministry needs. The need for such a fund has been recognized for years but because the operating fund barely covers expenses it has not been possible. The Operating Fund will provide some annual funding from its 2016 budget. Hopefully other needed funds will come from bequests, individual donations and if needed, earnings from the endowment fund managed by PG&M so that the fund principle will be maintained well into the future. The list of projects for these old assets is long but here are several immediate needs:

Roof—continue sanctuary replacement as well as the flat roof over the office areas ($70,000)

Windows—replace windows in the west side offices, room 237 as well as room 137 and the Library as they leak and are rotting ($3000)

Bathrooms—update church bathrooms on first floor ($20,000)

Berwyn Parsonage—new master bathroom ($20,000) Roof Leaks—Contract was given to Lane Roofing to repair/replace roofing in 4 areas which are leaking. Work will begin when the weather breaks. WiFi—Three new access points (transmitters) were purchased, installed and are being configured, which should soon provide full building access to the internet wirelessly.

Greetings from your Finance Committee Chair!

By Brett Landis

It’s a new year and perhaps a fresh start at our goals for the year ahead! From my seat,

I’ll keep an eye on our finance goals toward a balanced budget, if you would be sure to

keep pace with your pledge goals for 2015 from our recent “Fund the Blessing”

campaign. Sound like a deal? Tune in to the monthly Messenger for updates!

The chart below brings us up through January 2015 and compares to the same point of January 2014. By illustrating similar 12

month periods, we can see how the past 2 years compare. While it is evident that our income is up, our expenses are up as well.

We’re starting off the year on the right foot.

As I'm sure you've noticed, our February weather has made it challenging to get in to worship the past couple of Sundays. Time

spent in the pews hearing the message really does recharge the batteries and put a great spirit in the heart to face the week

ahead. Our Sunday services are the most frequent opportunity we have to make financial contributions to the church. Without

these, it is difficult to pay the bills. So I ask you to take a moment to consider two other contribution methods. First, use our

“Recurring Giving” feature for automatic deductions from your checking or savings account. Second, visit the Aldersgate website

and use the “Donate” button to make a one time secure contribution through PayPal using your credit or debit card. For more

information on either of these, please see me or call the church office for directions. Thanks so much for your continued support!

Aldersgate is a significant place where disciples are made.

Aldersgate Traditions—Liturgical Calendar & Colors

You may have noticed that the color of the stole that Pastors Chris & Don wear in Traditional services varies. If you are really

observant, you’ll notice that the stoles that the choir members wear are generally the same color and those colors are also

represented most times in the paraments on the altar, pulpit and lectern. The color choice is not accidental and generally reflects

the church calendar or liturgical seasons and associated colors. A brief explanation of the liturgical calendar & colors follows.

Advent – celebrates the coming or birth of Christ and is the beginning of the church new year (any day between November 27 and

December 3; always contains four Sundays; ends Christmas Eve). The traditional liturgical color is purple, however, blue is gaining

popularity. (We use blue.)

Christmas – celebrates the anniversary of the birth of Jesus, begins Christmas Day and lasts for 12 days. The liturgical color is

white.

Epiphany – celebrates the manifestation of the divine nature of Christ to the Gentiles as represented by the Magi and begins the

first Sunday in January and varies in length depending on the date set for Easter. It lasts until Septuagesima Sunday, 64 days

before Easter. For the first and last Sundays, the liturgical color is white, for Ash Wednesday, it is purple, and for the other days, it

is green.

Lent – observes a season of penitence (fasting and prayer) and is the season lasting forty-six days (not counting Sundays)

beginning Ash Wednesday and ending the eve of Easter. The liturgical color is purple. On Good Friday, black is substituted.

Ash Wednesday – addresses sin and death and is the day ashes are rubbed on foreheads symbolizing that we are dust,

and to dust we shall return, but with God’s grace we can learn to live this life more fully, embracing our sinfulness,

allowing God to transform us.

Palm Sunday – signals the upcoming end of Lent and the beginning of Holy Week and the day commemorates the

spreading of palms and clothing in Jesus’ path as He entered Jerusalem prior to His crucifixion.

Holy/Maundy Thursday – the word “Maundy” comes from the Latin word for ‘command’ (man datum), the command

Jesus gave His disciples to love one another and the day on which Jesus celebrated the Passover with His disciples, sharing

a meal with them, which we call the Last Supper.

Good Friday – a day of mourning and the holy day of meditation for Christians, celebrated the Friday before Easter. It

commemorates the suffering and death on the cross – the Crucifixion of Jesus at Calvary.

Easter – celebrates the commemoration of the Resurrection of Christ and begins on Easter Sunday and continues for fifty days

until Pentecost. The liturgical color is white and gold.

Pentecost – commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples and begins the “fiftieth day” after Easter and is

longest season of the church year. It lasts until the first Sunday in Advent. The liturgical color for the first Sunday is red; Trinity,

Christ the King, All Saints Day is white. The liturgical color for all other Sundays following Pentecost Sunday is green. The Season

of Pentecost celebrates that first Pentecost when all those who believed in Jesus Christ were gathered awaiting the coming of the

Holy Spirit. Their being on one accord was a result of things unseen that created an atmosphere celebrating their differences, and

made them one.

While Aldersgate does follow the liturgical calendar, there are times when the Pastor will “change it up” so that the chancel colors

better reflect the intention of the service. For example, red for celebrations, white for baptisms, weddings and funerals.

An Interview With a Child About Recycling By Sharon Jennelly

Aldersgate’s Care for Creation Team asked me to conduct an interview with one of our Pre-K Aldersgate Preschool children.

Me: What is recycling?

Brogan: “We recycle donuts.”

Me: Really?

Brogan: “Yes, we recycle the donut box. That is what we recycle.”

Me: Do you recycle bottles?

Brogan: “Yes we recycle the bottles with the arrows on it.”

Me: What about paper?

Brogan: “Sometimes we put it in the big blue trash can with the yellow top at preschool and cardboard, too!”

Even our beloved Brogan at 5 years old knows to recycle!

Soup-er Bowl Sunday - Sponsored By Hannah Circle

You can “BATTLE HUNGER” all year long by bringing non-perishable food items to church each week and placing them in the grocery baskets located around the church. Items are delivered weekly to food pantries in Wilmington.

Hungry Senior Citizens Need You to Volunteer — NOW

By Betty Moore, AUMC Coordinator for MOW

The above is quoted from Scott Lugar’s article in a recent News

Journal. Scott is Meals On Wheels Delaware Board Chairman,

a volunteer driver and AUMC member. I hope you all read

Scott’s article emphasizing the great need of Meals On Wheels

to our senior citizens. I thought it was great, but then I’ve also

been a MOW volunteer for many years. I find it to be very

rewarding to deliver nutritious meals and a friendly smile to

frail seniors who are unable to get out or prepare food for

themselves. Sometimes this volunteer is the only person the

senior sees each day.

For a variety of reasons, many of our Aldersgate volunteers

have had to leave or take a break from MOW. Our goal: to

have enough volunteers to deliver meals just one week per

month! We currently have two vacancies & need volunteers

to deliver on Wednesday and Thursday the last week of each

month. It takes less than two hours & it’s time well spent!

If you are interested in joining our team

or would like more information, please

contact Betty Moore at 302-475-5785

or by e-mail at

[email protected] or

[email protected].
