Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2015 - Alberni Valley News A2 www.albernivalleynews.com

There is nothing worse than losing a child,

and over the years I have known far too many people who have endured such excruciating agony. Last year alone three of my friends and two acquaintances suffered this unfathomable loss – and then my niece’s baby girl died in late November.

When I read last week of the 21-year-old woman who perished in a car accident in Kelowna, I immediately thought of her mother and father and my heart

went out to them. The following day I read that it was a fire chief’s daughter and he was one of the first responders on the scene. I don’t even know them, but I cried.

I posted the gut-wrenching story on Facebook and among all the condolences to the family there was a comment from my new friend, Larry Barter.

“The greatest gift one can provide these parents is to be available,” he wrote. “Often people will avoid the survivors because they don’t know what to do or say.” He then offered a few suggestions such as: I’m sorry for your loss; I have no idea

what you are going through; I don’t know what to say or do; what do you need?

Larry knows the inconceivable sorrow of losing a child because he lost both of his. Taylor, his eldest son, died 10 years after a terrible car crash had left him severely brain injured at the age of 19.

Michael, his younger son, died of a broken heart when he took his own life at the age of 18 – a year and a half after his brother’s devastating accident.

“Our tragedies didn’t just affect us,” he said. “They also impacted our family, friends, colleagues and community. Even strangers were thinking: if it could happen to the Barters it could happen to anyone.”

Some individuals offered tremendous support and compassion, others didn’t respond at all.

“There were people I knew who would sooner cross the road

than talk to me,” Larry said. “What my family and I needed was not to be ignored, but to feel included and connected.”

At the time, Larry was the regional director of alcohol and drug services. He is now a clinical counsellor and understands that this kind of avoidance stems from survivor’s guilt. While this reaction might be understandable to people who don’t know what to say, it’s not the least bit helpful to those who are grieving.

Other things that didn’t provide solace were well-meaning comments such as: everything happens for a reason; he’s in a better place; time heals all wounds, you can always have more children; and God has a plan.

Hearing “I know how you feel” was not comforting either.

“Linda Woods hosts a support group for bereaved parents called The

Compassionate Friends of Kelowna,” Larry said. “I sat in a room full of people who had also suffered the loss of a child, but I didn’t know how they felt. I only knew what I was going through.”

Asking mourners how they feel and what they need is infinitely more supportive.

“My advice is not to avoid people when they’re in such pain,” Larry suggested. “And don’t try to fix it either. You don’t have to know what to say, just let them know you care and you’re available.”

After years of therapy over the loss of his beloved boys and the life he once had, Larry eventually

got to a point where he consciously decided that he wanted to live and love and contribute.

“I will always feel an emptiness and loss without them,” he said. “But where I used to feel like I lived 90 per cent of my life in darkness, I now feel like it’s 95 per cent light. When the darkness comes in now, I know it will pass.”

Loving his sons and keeping their memories alive has helped him get to that place, yet he couldn’t have done it on his own. He needed counselling, and he needed to connect with others.

It may appear that the people mourning a loved are doing just fine. Larry doesn’t want us to be fooled by their facade, and to keep letting them know we’re here for them, for as long as they may need us.

◆ COVER STORY

Technician gets taste of national ice makingSUSAN QUINN

ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

When Gord Twanow agreed to work at the Lethbridge Curling Club as a high school student in 1980, it was to make a few bucks. In Grade 12, he was making $20 a night—big money at the time— to sweep up the ice and re-pebble it, getting it ready for the next set of games.

It wasn’t until the late 1980s when the curling club hosted a national ladies’ championship and he was on the ice making team that Twanow realized he could probably make a career out of it.

Now, Twanow’s name is familiar to curlers and ice technicians alike on Vancouver Island and beyond for his fast, competitive ice. Curlers competing in the B.C. senior men’s and women’s championships in Port Alberni Feb. 16–22 will get a first-hand taste of that ice, as Twanow is the new ice technician at the Alberni Valley Curling Club this season.

(“It’s like TV ice,” says Gord’s wife Michelle, who is organizing the Tim Hortons BC Senior Curling Championships. “I’m sure they’re going to be happy with that.”)

“In 1980 I was still in high school and it was a part-time job,” says Twanow. “It was just a matter of how quick you could (clean) between draws. Back in the ‘80s curling was a different beast. There were still ashtrays on the ice and corn brooms.”

Making ice, and the role ice played on the game, wasn’t quite as detailed as it is now.

“It wouldn’t have been until 1987 when I did my first national event in Lethbridge, the Scott Tournament of Hearts. That was

my first taste of the professionalism of it all,” he said. He was on a crew of three that prepared the ice for that national ladies’ tournament at the Sportsplex in Lethbridge.

In 1987 he moved to Calgary to go to college at the Southern Institute of Technology (SAIT) and picked up some part-time work at the now defunct Westwinds Curling Club. He volunteered on the ice crew for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, where curling was a one-week demonstration sport. “We ripped that ice out and put in the short track speedskating ice, which was also a demonstration sport at the time.”

He got his first head ice making job in Penticton, B.C. in 1989, eventually moving to Cloverdale,

Nanaimo and Parksville. While in Nanaimo, he called up the people running the Labatt Brier (the men’s national curling championship) in Calgary and asked if they needed ice technicians. He went to Calgary for the tournament, and even pebbled the final game. He met the late Shorty Jenkins there, considered one of the best ice technicians in the world until his death in April 2013, and Shorty took Twanow under his wing.

Twanow returned to the Labatt Brier in Winnipeg in 1998 and volunteered for Hans Wuthrich, another internationally known ice technician who headed the ice makers for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

“That was the time I realized how political the hierarchy for ice making for the Canadian Curling Association was,” Twanow said. “It got to the point where I thought this wasn’t going to go anywhere. That was the last national event I did.”

He has still kept his hand in provincial events, helping make ice for three B.C. events in Parksville.

From / A3A few years ago

the Twanows quit their jobs, sold everything and retired to Nicaragua, where they own a bed and breakfast. They had been going down there for a few years setting up the business and decided the country located near the southern tip of North America

would provide the idyllic landscape they craved for retirement.

They lasted for one year.

“Believe it or not, we got sick of the heat and sun,” he said.

“We missed Canada and curling.”

Twanow got a job making ice at the curling club in Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast when

they returned to Canada not quite two years ago.

“Then this rink (Port Alberni) came open. I had curled here before and knew people here,” so he applied and was hired this season.

He’s glad to be back on the ice.

“The bottom line is people are 99.9 per cent of the time

happy. It’s a good work environment,” he said. “It’s a great job. You’re not under pressure; you’re not stuck to a desk.

“On the other side of the coin, there’s the art of creating ice that people enjoy. It’s a similar feeling to maybe a chef that makes a fancy dish of food for customers and they love it.”

What is global divestment?Alberni Valley

Transition Town Society will screen the 44-minute documentary Do the Math on Thursday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. as part of Global Divestment Day, a new 350.org activism campaign.

“This is one of

the best and most important films that has been made about climate change,” says AVTT representative John Mayba.

Originally shown across the U.S. on Al Jazeera America, Do the Math clearly lays out the problem and takes a realistic

look at the solutions, highlighting fossil fuel divestment, as one of the main tools at our disposal to solve the problem of climate change, Mayba said.

The presentation takes place at Char’s Landing on Thursday at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
