Thousands of people gathered on February 2 at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to watch a famous groundhog deliver his highly anticipated forecast. Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his burrow around 7:30 AM and did not see his shadow, predicting an early spring for us all.
We all celebrated the fact that we were going to start seeing sunny warm days sooner this year and for me personally it was time to get the motorcycles ready to roll. As it turns out February was one of the coldest on record and on February 24th, Old Man Winter bared his teeth and dumped up to a foot of snow on the mid-Willamette valley floor. Talk about a letdown. I heard a rumor that Phil was arrested and is now on trial for fraud!
It made me curious so I did some investigating and found that Phil doesn’t have a very good track record even though he’s been in the business for 130 years.
I guess it’s a pretty tough job predicting a month and a half of weather in advance, but you’d think he’d have the hang of it by now. Based on the last decade, Phil has only been correct 40% of the time, worse than just flipping a coin. I must add that to Phil’s credit he’s probably as accurate as the human forecasters with a plethora of computing power trying to edge him out of a job.
That said, it is now April and we all hope to start seeing warmer days, back yard BBQ’s and good rounds of golf in our immediate future. For those of us who haven’t already, you better start wiping the dust off those Harleys, BMWs or whatever your ride of choice is!
Last month the chamber celebrated its 74th Distinguished Service Awards at the Linn County Expo Center. For those who weren’t able to make it, we had a great evening. Representative Andy Olson took home the 2019 Legacy Award. Jim Merryman won the Distinguished Service Award for a lifetime of service to the Albany community. Chris Reese won the Jim Linhart First Citizen Award. Eric Fedler won the Jr. First Citizen Award. Rosemarie Howard from SAHS won the Distinguished Student Award. Parr Lumber and the Mennonite Village won the Small and Large Business of the Year Awards. Thanks to all who attended the event and congratulations to all the very deserving winners!

Personal BackGround: I was born in California but grew up in Silverton, Oregon and graduated from high school in 2002. After high school I attended Oregon State University for 2 years, got married and had our first child, Peyten. I then left OSU, welcomed another child into the world, and worked full-time for 5 years before returning to OSU through their online degree eCampus program, all while being a stay-at-home dad. I cherish that time with my children and have no hesitation in saying I was a “non-traditional” student, receiving 2 Bachelor’s degrees, in Political Science and in Liberal Studies.
My family and I live in a historic home in downtown Albany. We love our big historic home, I continually find new projects and things to change/update. My wonderful wife Stephanie has found her calling as the Shelter Manager at SafeHaven Humane Society, my daughter Peyten is in 7 th grade at North Albany Middle School, and my son, Jake, is in 5 th grade at North Albany Elementary. We enjoy exploring, traveling, hiking, biking, and camping.
Business MarkeTinG niche: One of the greatest strengths we have at No Dinx is just how much we can accomplish. Every day is unique and sees new and different projects. We have the experience, knowledge, and resources to make great work happen quickly with a design-above-all-else approach. I rely a lot on the great team we have here to make vision become reality. What I most enjoy is seeing the finished product and what it means to my clients to deliver great product unique and tailored just for them.
BiGGesT issue FacinG alBany: There are many issues facing Albany, but a vastly greater number that truly make Albany a great place. Through my volunteer work I choose to focus on the positive, which then overshadows the negative. Anyone can get involved and make a difference in this community!
chaMBer and/or coMMuniTy involveMenT: I’m actively involved in the community, serving as a Board Member of the Albany Visitors Association and the Enliven Foundation, as well as being a committee member for the Albany Public School Foundations’ iCelebrate Gala Dinner/Auction and Albany Downtown Association events.
