ALBATEX® DBC protective colloid DYEING AUXILIARIES

USES

Dyeing gray-state cotton, cotton and polyester/cotton blends by the exhaust and continuous methods with reactive, direct and vat dyes.

Characteristics Benefits

• Action based on dispersing and calcium/magnesium-inactivating properties.

• Disperses sparingly soluble calcium and magnesium salts.

• Inactivates calcium and magnesium ions present in hard water and on cotton.

• Dispersing properties. • Disperses the sparingly soluble salts, that form from calcium and magnesium (e.g. calcium carbonate) and precipitated dyes and hardness ions.

• Improves dye bath stability. • Promotes the best possible conditions for level

dyeing.

• Inactivating properties. • Has a “softening effect” on the dye bath. • Prevents stains, markings and unlevelness. • Increases yield and improves reproducibility of

dyeings, produced with dyes that are sensitive to calcium and magnesium.

• Binds heavy metal ions in water. • No shade change with dyes, sensitive to iron and/or copper.

Characteristics Benefits

• Improves dye solubility. • Prevents dye agglomeration induced by hard water or salt additions.

• Surfactant-free, non-foaming formulation.

• Has no retarding action and does not impair yield or reproducibility of dyeings.

• Suitable for jet and overflow machines.

• No demetalization of dyes. • No shade change or impaired light fastness.

• Colorless, clear liquid. • Does not stain substrate. No shade change or dulling of pastel shades.

• Prevents staining of dyeing machines.

• Allows savings on machine cleaning.

• Free from APEO and phosphate

• Not toxic to the environment.

• Not toxic or harmful to aquatic organisms.

PROPERTIES

Chemical constitution Mixture of an additional complexing agent and polymers

Ionic character Anionic

Physical form Clear, colorless, low-viscosity liquid

pH of 5% solution: About 5

Specific gravity at 20°C About 1.1

Viscosity 5–10 m Pas at a shear of 3s-1 (equivalent to Brookfield spindle 2, 20 rpm).

General stability Highly stable in hard water and to alkalis, acids and electrolytes at the concentrations usually encountered in dyeing.

Storage stability Stable for at least 1 year at 20°C in closed containers.

Compatibility Can be used together with anionic and nonionic products if dyeing is performed carefully.

Ecology/toxicology The usual hygiene and safety rules for handling chemicals should be observed in storage and handling. The product must not be swallowed. .

APPLICATIONS

Dissolving / diluting

ALBATEX DBC protective colloid can be diluted in all proportions by pouring on cold or warm water.

Required amount

This depends on water hardness, purity of the cotton and liquor ratio. The following recommendation can be used as a guideline:

1.0–3.0 g/l ALBATEX® DBC

The maximum amount of ALBATEX® DBC is recommended for use in hard water, for gray-state or impure cotton, and in short-liquor treatments

NOTES

ALBATEX® DBC protective colloid must also be used for dyeing in soft water. In reactive dyeing with soda as fixing alkali, the formation of calcium carbonate can result in stains, markings and unlevelness. ALBATEX® DBC protective colloid prevents all this. ALBATEX® DBC protective colloid is particularly recommended for dyeing gray-state cotton and for the wash-dye procedure.

Dispersing power:

1 g/l ALBATEX® DBC protective colloid disperses up to about 0.125 g/l CaCO3. This is equivalent to a water hardness of about 9° Clark. Determination is done by a modified Hampshire test method.

Calcium inactivation:

1 g/l ALBATEX® DBC protective colloid inactivates up to about 0.025 g/l CaO. This is equivalent to a water hardness of about 3° Clark. Determination is done by complexometric titration.

How calcium and magnesium enter the dye bath:

Calcium and magnesium can originate from hard water and/or the cotton. Cotton can contain up to 3000 ppm hardness salts (calcium, magnesium), depending on origin and pretreatment. Pretreated cotton can still contain up to 300 ppm calcium and magnesium.

Example: In soft water, at a 10:1 liquor ratio, cotton containing 300 ppm calcium gives a concentration of 0.03 g/l calcium (equivalent to 0.042 g/l CaO or 5° Clark).
