What we are…

Alaska Distillery is an artisan distillery located in the fertile plain of Alaska’s Matanuska Valley at the foothills of the Alaska Range. We craft our award-winning spirits using glacier ice from Prince William Sound and natural ingredients that we harvest from the wilds of Alaska.

We blend our skill and passion to the most pristine water on Earth and marry it to the indigenous flavors of Alaska. The spirits we craft are a reflection of ourselves and the untamed beauty of Alaska.

We love Alaska and we love what we do. From expeditions to wrangle two-ton icebergs into a skiff, to driving four wheelers up the Knik River Valley in search of Fireweed blossoms or even to harvesting our own honey. We take pride in our craft and go the extra mile to gather only the best ingredients that Alaska has to offer.

Alaska Distillery offers our customers not only a spirit from Alaska, but also the spirit of Alaska.

Welcome to Alaska Distillery, where there is a story behind every bottle.

Humble Beginnings..

Toby Foster, the company’s founder was a medevac pilot in Alaska for many years before a serious airplane crash inspired him to hang up his spurs as a pilot and start Alaska Distillery. His grandfather had been a moonshiner back in the day, so Toby had distilling in his blood and he had a wealth of knowledge to draw from. Not having significant capital, Toby built the distillery by hand in rural Alaska with limited resources and materials.

The distillery was little more than a cabin, it lacked running water, heat, electricity or even a road! All the supplies were brought in by a wagon during the summer and by sled in the winter. The distillery equipment was all built by hand and it took a lot of work to produce those first few batches, but Alaska Distillery was the first distillery in Alaska.

Even without all the modern conveniences and equipment that modern distilleries have, Alaska Distillery was still able to produce vodka that is judged to be the best in the world.

We’ve since moved out of our little cabin and into a larger facility so we can keep up with the demand, but we have not forgotten where we came from, nor have we forgotten that you have to work really hard to make great spirits.

We are glad that so many folks love our products and we are really happy to finally have a road…

Why Alaska, Why Alaska Distillery…

Alaska and all things Alaska are very popular because Alaska personifies the attributes that consumers are looking for in theproducts they buy; purity, quality and uniqueness. Alaska is a place that is part of our collective conciseness of a far off land that is unspoiled and wild, a land yearning to be explored. Vast vistas of massive mountains, glaciers, rivers and places untold that have never been walked on by man. Alaska is mysterious and beautiful, full of adventure and wonder; a place where a man can still walk out into the woods, build a cabin and live a life among the grandeur of untamed wilderness.Alaska conveys an image that resonates within us.

Alaska is an ideal as much as it is a place.

Alaska Distillery has what no other distillery on Earth can provide…..We offer the consumer both an uncompromising spirit from Alaska and the spirit of Alaska.

The Micro Distillery difference….

Micro-Distilleries are quickly growing in popularity in the United States. This growth is due to the demand for spirits that are handcrafted on an artisanal scale that emphasizes the artist working his craft for the enjoyment of his customers. This relationship is an intimate one where the craftsman has a personal relationship to those who support his hard work. Large scale industrial alcohol producers have lost this connection to the customer and the consumer is choosing higher quality over lower prices as a result.

Expeditions.

Alaska Distillery works harder than any distillery in the world. Alaska Distillery hand harvests ingredients from thewilds of Alaska to produce the finest Spirits on Earth. Every bottle we craft has a story full of adventure. We go to

extraordinary lengths to bring our customers a rare taste of Alaska; from wrangling one ton icebergs onto a skiff,to four wheeling deep into the Talkeetna mountains in search of fireweed blossoms, Dog mushing through the frozenwilderness in search of a far off fish camp for the perfect Smoked Salmon, hand picking our berries in bear country and collecting our own honey from our own hives

The secret to great vodka is the quality of the water used in the distilling process. In Alaska we have a water source that is the purest on earth; Glaciers.

Formed over 10,000 years ago during the last ice age, this ice was laid down snowflake by snowflake, until these rivers of ice grew to tremendous size and slowly traveled to the Pacific Ocean from the mountains of Alaska. After reaching the salty waters of the North Pacific, the glaciers break apart and send giant icebergs drifting out to sea.

We harvest some of these icebergs as the water we collect from these ancient blocks of ice is the purest on Earth and only the best water can make the best vodka.

Aviation is a big part of our Alaskan heritage and as a former bush pilot, I found it fitting to set up the distillery in an old aircraft hanger once we moved out of the cabin.
