LOGISTICS

Page 7: Alandale Group Introduction

IntroductionAlandale Logistics was formed in 1996 to provide

‘Logistical Services’ to the construction industry.

We are very proud to hold all of our staff expertise in-house

and this allows us complete control and a uniformed approach

to the services we provide.

Logistics (in construction terms) provides solutions & support

services in several differing areas of the construction process;

from the planning & pre-construction phases of a project

through to completion.

The philosophy of our logistical service is to plan and provide

practical solutions for a construction project to allow it to

progress safely, efficiently and cost effectively.

Whilst our Logistics team provides this support service, the

client can focus upon the construction and programme

methodology of the project.

By using our past experiences and knowledge of practical

logistics management techniques, we assist in providing the

best possible solutions and management systems for each

particular project.

Over our trading period we have taken our core logistics

services and integrated these into our ISO 9000 / 14001 and

18001 quality assurance systems to ensure that a ‘continuous

improvement’ philosophy is monitored and adopted for all of

our projects.

With over 1.9m sq. ft. of retail and leisure space, this is the largest urban shopping mall in Europe, Alandale provided a Logistics Management Service for the duration of the project.

Shard London Bridge

At over 1000ft, the Shard will be the tallest building in the European Union, it is also one of the most challenging areas of London. Alandale assisted in the Logistical Pre-planning for the project.

Swept Path AnalysisAlandale’s in-house dept of traffic and logistics engineers

carry out logistical planning works for some of the largest

and technically complex projects in the UK.

As part of this logistical planning process, one of the key /

fundamental areas is the conducting of vehicle ‘swept path

analysis’

A ‘swept path’ is the desktop study of a vehicle route

(either to or through) a project, using various sizes of vehicle.

This is done to determine the physical capacity of the route /

project and in turn which vehicles can do so safely and efficiently.

This exercise includes any required turning / manoeuvres that

may be required to be completed by the vehicle.

From this we then produce a report that will demonstrate to the

client our findings – and will include produced drawings and

narration to explain our findings.

Example Swept Path AnalysisShard ~ London Bridge

Page 10: Alandale Group Introduction

Logistics Management PlanningFrom the Vehicle Swept Path’s produced, an analysis is

conducted to determine the safest and most efficient

logistical management system possible for the project.

This study will take into account the following:

■ Understanding of the Project Parameters

■ Programme and Construction Methodology Understanding

■ Identification of Critical Construction Paths

This analysis will then encapsulate all significant aspects of the

projects logistics – and these main considerations will be:

■ Traffic Management and Vehicle Routes

■ Delivery, Craneage and Off-loading Management

■ Hoisting / Material Management

■ Pedestrian Routes

■ Security and Access Control

■ Waste and Environmental Management

The planning works produced will contain the essential

information required, highlighting any particular issues or

restrictions that could affect the project.

Once completed, we then demonstrate our findings using

Management Plans.

Dependant upon the complexity / size of the project, these

Management plans will either combine all of our studies, or be

split into the respective elements of our analysis (for clarity /

ease of understanding).

Logistics Management StrategyFrom the swept path analysis, logistics planning and other

various management plans produced, comes a wealth of

project specific logistical information, and all of this forms

an integral part of producing the projects specific Logistics

Management strategy document.

The Logistics Management Strategy is produced to provide a

project ‘bible’ for all stakeholders (from the Client though to

the Sub-Contractor) and will be initially drafted and submitted

for comment and only when the client is satisfied with the

content and ultimately given final approval, will the document

be formally released to the Contractors.

This document’s format is designed to improve the logistical

and contractual management of the project on

the client’s behalf.

The logistical management strategy produced normally

forms part of the contract documents for each contractor;

and in doing so effectively ‘ties’ all contractors into the

implementation of the developed strategy throughout the

construction process (which provides the client with control and

management of the logistical elements throughout the project)

Contractors HandbookAlandale Logistics design and produce project-specific

logistical contractor’s handbooks for each and every

project we are awarded.

The contractor’s handbook is a summary version of the

detailed Logistics Strategy we produce.

The intention of this document is to provide all contractors

supervisors and managers with the essential information needed

to execute the required logistical, security, waste, environmental

and health and safety procedures for the project.

As well as the aforementioned procedures, the handbook will

also contain the following:

■ Logistics Management Team

■ Current Logistics Plan

■ Example forms / documents

■ Logistics Attendance Matrix – that outlines

clearly the responsibilities of each party involved

in the project.

The Contractors handbook is communicated and issued

to all contractors as part of the induction or site starter

pack and is intended to be a day-to-day guide for the

supervisors to refer to.

The handbook

identifies the

management systems

that will be in place

for the project and

all contractors will be

required to adhere to

these agreed systems.

Plot 8 Fire Station ~ More London Estate

With the More London Estate coming to completion, the ‘Plot 8’ More London Project was one of the final ‘Plots’ to be undertaken.

Plot 8 (as it was referred to) was the complete restoration of ‘The Old Tooley Street Fire Station’. This Victorian Grade II listed building had partially retained facades and a watch tower that became part of the completed building.

Alandale Building and Fit-out were appointed as the Main Contractor for the Plot 8 project, and were responsible for the Envelope, Roof, M&E, Internal Fit-Out and Finishes.

The Building also achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ Rating.

Case Studies

The Shard – London Bridge - MACE

During 2007, Alandale Logistics were awarded the Tunnel

Infill package as part of the enabling works for the Shard,

London Bridge. Utilising expanding foam concrete we in filled

the tunnel sections, some of which were 5 metres deep and 5

metres in length with various widths to contend with.

We arranged for the road closures and put in place a complete

logistical programme designed to encompass all requirements

whilst limiting the impact on the public and the environment.

Bond Street Station Upgrade – Bond Street – Costain

Laing O’Rourke

Civil works revealing the structure columns in the Bank of

Israel enabling the sampling of the materials in order to gauge

the capacity to withstand major tunnelling works. Utilising our

Engineers, Civils and trades, this package was successfully

completed on time and within budget.

The team were restricted to weekend working as the bank

was open for business during the week and all parties were

commended on the quality of the works, leaving all areas

complete and clean ready for business.

Thameslink Programme – Farringdon Station –

Costain Laing O’Rourke

Alandale Rail was awarded a number of civil packages whilst

working on the Thameslink programme at Farringdon. Works

included deep excavation, block and concrete works, buffer

installation, UTX works, and the construction of the main

ramp way. Alandale demonstrated that we had the ability and

capability to meet requirements and maximise productivity

without compromising safety.

The nature of these works required precise planning, working

within the limited time slots available on the rail infrastructure.

All works were completed within time and within budget.

General

Our Track and Civil management team have extensive

experience of managing and working on major construction

and civil works on large infrastructure projects. With the

support from our Logistics and Security companies, we are

able to offer the full service delivery for this package without

sub letting any of the works.
