SHELBY COUNTY SENIOR PICNIC MAY 19 The Shelby County

Senior Picnic will be held inAlabaster this year at theAlabaster Senior Center. Theevent will take place onThursday, May 19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and isexpected to draw a largenumber of seniors fromaround the county.

"It is a large event," saidSenior Activities ManagerAlicia Walters. "So they'll setup a large tent outside witha stage for the dignitariesand the entertainment."

According to Walters, theShelby County Senior Picnic

is an annual event thatchanges locations each year.This year, Alabaster wasselected to host the gather-ing.

"Shelby County puts iton, and they change venueseach year," said Walters."It's open to seniors in theShelby County area, and it'sa free event. They serve ameal. There's usually liveentertainment. There's avariety of vendors and a lotof fun stuff."

The picnic itself will takeplace outside the senior cen-ter, but the building willstill be open so that visitors

can access the restrooms ortake a tour of the new facility.Guests will also be able toenjoy the Buck Creek Trail.

"We should have somegolf carts and things to showoff our beautiful Buck CreekTrail," said Walters. "There's avariety of activities. It's just afun day that Shelby Countydoes to show its appreciationfor its senior adults in thecommunity."

Easter Seals of theBirmingham Area held itsannual "Walk With Me"fundraiser at Veterans Parkon April 2, and organizerssaid they were very happywith the turnout.

"It went really well," saidKelli Keith, the director ofmarketing and developmentfor Easter Seals. "We hadabout 300 walk participants,and we raised $66,000 withmoney still coming in, whichis typically the way it hap-pens. Money will trickle intypically through mid-sum-mer."

This year's event, whichwas the fifth annual "WalkWith Me" fundraiser, alsoincluded a new 5K run.

"We added a 5K this year,and we had almost 150 run-ners, which for a first 5K isjust unbelievable. We got a

lot of good feedback aboutthe course and the runtimes. I think because thecourse was so flat, peoplewere very excited that theirtimes were faster than nor-mal," said Keith.

According to Keith, the5K course was entirely con-

tained within Veterans Park,which meant that the run-ners didn't have to concernthemselves with avoidingtraffic.

"It started at the entranceto the park, right there inthe parking lot, and you

logistically it was a little bitmore, but it all came togeth-er very well," said Keith.

I want to begin this month by congratulating all of our highschool and college graduating seniors! I am very proud of allyour hard work over the years and I want to wish each of you thehappiest and brightest future. Each year I remind our graduatesthat you will face many new opportunities and challengeswhether you are continuing your education or starting a career. I hope that you will take time to reflect on the values and knowl-edge that you have acquired over the years as these presentthemselves in the years to come. Never forget your roots andthat you have friends and family that love and support you eventhough you may be miles away.

You may be saying to yourself “Here we go again” with thenews of a possible new school system study. You may be askingwhy in the world we would want to even consider this option atthis point in time or didn’t we get the answer from the last study.These are great questions and I would like to address some of thefacts. The previous study was conducted approximately six yearsago by an independent consultant. In short, the study stated thatAlabaster was large enough and sufficient funding was generatedin the area to have a city school system at the same quality of thecurrent Shelby County system. It further stated that we wouldneed to increase funding if we wanted a system that offered moreopportunities for students in academics and extracurricular activ-ities. At the time, we decided to try to work with the existingcounty system through additional funding. We funded tutoring,computers, smart boards, paid for garbage service, suppliedresource officers, provided fire safety training, built restrooms atthe football field, provided classroom money and more. Whilethis did assist our schools, it really was not enough to make largechanges to the education process. It rather kept us from gettingfurther behind as the economy and traditional funding decreased.

The school system issue is something that I am very torn over.Our county system is probably the best in the state. We havegreat teachers, administrators, and staff. The county faces manychallenges with funding and the fact is that they must do theirbest in approximately 39 schools and not just those in Alabaster.That makes it difficult to add new units or classes and forces thecounty policy of no money for sports facilities. They are notbeing mean spirited but rather trying to use their funds in thebest way and spread them as evenly as possible. They would bereluctant to add new teaching units based on city funding due tothe fact that if that funding went away and the teacher hadtenure, Shelby County would have to continue the funding. Thiswould be a definite budget wrecker for the system and makes theaddition of extra teaching units and curriculum difficult.

If Alabaster begins a city school system, we would get controlof all of the existing county property in our city limits, retain allcurrent faculty, administrators, and staff with tenure and stateretirement, and most funding that is currently generated inAlabaster for the schools. This needs to be understood becausesomeone is already telling teachers that their careers are at riskand this is just not a true fact. If we began our own system, Ibelieve that it only needs to be done if we can make it a bettersystem and if the majority of you want the system formed.Improving the system will require more funding and that is adecision that each and every one of you must decide for yourself.I expect that we will have several public meetings just to listen. Iwould like to hear from you no matter which option you believeis the best one for Alabaster. If you will let me know yourthoughts and why you believe as you do, it will help all of us formulate the right course for our city. Thank you!

true especially along the Buck Creek Trail. Recently therehave been a number of Wild Lillies in bloom along withother wildflowers along the trail. Also, big turtles havebeen spotted resting on logs in the creek which is a verygood sign. A beaver working on a dam and a foragingbunny rabbit were also spotted on the trail. If you haven’ttaken the trail recently, it’s a great way to enjoy natureright here in the city.

With the great weather, there’s been a lot of activity inthe city. The National Curly Dog show was held and wasa great success. We welcome these visitors to our city andhope you had a wonderful time. I know everyone had agreat time at the Easter Egg hunt, which is always fun.

Speaking of the outdoors, our big annual outdoorparty is CityFest, which is bigger than ever this year fea-turing country music star Craig Morton. It should be agreat show and a great time. Make plans to be atMunicipal Park on Saturday June 4th. You and your fami-ly will have a wonderful time.

Another great outdoor activity is the Senior Picnic,which will be held in Alabaster this year at the AlabasterSenior Center. The event will take place on Thursday, May19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is expected to draw a largenumber of seniors from around the county. There will beall sorts of activities and fun. If you’re a senior or knowsomeone who is, be sure to let them know!

The Walk with Me event at Vets Park was a great suc-cess with the 5K run, then a general walk for everyone. Itwas a great time for a great cause.

We welcome the teams and families of the ACCCSoftball Tournament, which we are proud to host May 6-8.This should be a great time for everyone and another eventwhich helps our city businesses.

While we’re talking about being outdoors, let’s don’tforget that Movies in the Park will begin Friday, June 10, atVeterans Park and conclude on July 22. They’ll be show-ing a variety of family films that you can enjoy by bringinga blanket or lawn chairs and sitting out under the stars.It’s a great family outing.

Speaking of families, May means Mother’s Day. Solet’s take time to honor the Moms in our lives that work sohard to take care of the family.

Our school system is currently a major topic of conversation among Alabaster residents. Certainoptions are being seriously considered by the City Council to ensure the planning for our schools is

in the best interest of our children, residents, and the future of our city. If you have any questions or comments regard-ing this issue, please feel free to contact me.

I am continuing to work with the Abatement Board to resolve the problem of abandoned structures throughoutAlabaster. As you know, several of them are in Ward 1. I truly appreciate your patience as this difficult issue isaddressed.

Alabaster CityFest is scheduled for Saturday, June 4. More than 60,000 people are expected to attend and volunteersare needed to make this another successful event! If you are interested in volunteering, please go to www.alabasterci-tyfest.com.

The Easter Seals "Walk With Me" event at Veteran's Park raised thousands of dollars that will make a difference inthe lives of people with disabilities. It has been a busy Spring. You have probably heard that we are looking at a new study of ourschools in the Alabaster area. Our first step is to see what the numbers say and then determine

where we go from there. I believe Alabaster is the largest city in the state outside of Mobile and Prattville that does nothave a city system. I think it is only prudent that we continue to look at the best interest of our children. That may ormay not lead us to a city system, but it would seem like a good idea to make sure, whether it is county or city run, weare offering the very best for our residents. I encourage you to stay informed and please contact any of your city repre-sentatives with questions or for information.

CityFest is next month and promises to once again be a great showcase for our city and more importantly the localbusiness community which makes this all happen. The Alabaster Arts Council, whom are all volunteers, works veryhard to make this event happen every year. I am looking forward to a May with MANY flowers after the showers of April. The Park and Recteam has been making sure that comes true. To see what I mean, head out to one of our parks this

month and enjoy the beauty with your family. Thanks to all the P&R team for all they do for all of us. There has been much hoopla about discussions the council has had recently regarding the Shelby County schools in

Alabaster. Lest this get blown out of proportion, please understand we are investigating ideas by which we will be ableto optimize help to our students. There is absolutely no animosity between us and the school board. If increasing oursupport for the board (we already provide free resource officers, pay for all trash removal and make classroom/equip-ment donations annually) is the best course of action, so be it. If looking at forming a city school system down the roadwhen we are able to afford it is the best course of action, so be it. We want to do whatever is in our power to upgradeour schools and their facilities. The Alabaster Sports and Entertainment Foundation has already moved forward regard-ing athletic facilities, and to them I am truly grateful. The bottom line is simply this: We are told by the voters to spendtax money for the best use. Is there a better use than the future of our children and the quality of life here? Stay tunedfor more exciting developments....

Happy May! Thanks to the Alabaster Arts Council and the tireless work of its volunteers, CityFestis one again shaping up to be the best FREE event in the state. If you have never attended you real-

ly owe it to yourself to come this year. Beside great music there will be food, vendors and plenty of FREE rides for thekids. I look forward to seeing you there. Make plans to attend today.

Last month we enjoyed the annual Easter egg hunt sponsored by Westwood Baptist Church. Again, such a greatfamily event would not be possible without the help of countless volunteers and Park & Rec department. Thanks alsogo out to our Public Safety and Public Works employees for their quick and decisive work following the tornado thatswept through our city last month. We are truly blessed to live in a city that invests in its resident's safety and is familyfriendly.

May 8th is Mother's Day - take your Momma out to eat at one of our local restaurants, I am sure she deserves it.Keep in Touch!

I hope that everyone has had a tremendous start to Spring! I know that the staff at our Parks andRec Department have been extremely busy with spring sports in full swing. If you have time, please come out andenjoy our Parks and maybe catch a baseball/softball game or a soccer match. Our Staff does a great job of providingour kids an excellent opportunity to play. In recent newsletters numerous council members have discussed the topic ofconducting a feasibility for an Alabaster City School System. I have had the opportunity to meet with many Board ofEducation Leaders, our area Principals, a person that conducts feasibility studies as well as spend a lot of time research-ing City School Systems. There is a lot to consider when an opportunity like this is brought before you. I encourage allCity residents to to put thought into what it would take for Alabaster to offer a "Second to None" educational experi-ence for our children. Lastly Alabaster CityFest is right around the corner. Please make sure that you have this tremendous event on your schedule.

I know I talk about Zoning issues a lot but that's just how I roll (sadly enough). Last year we totallyrevamped the Subdivision Regulations, in part to correct the process for building roads in subdivi-sion. In March, the Planning and Zoning Board approved some changes to the Zoning regulations

and recommended them to the Council. If you remember, we changed the entire Zoning document in 1999. We havemade several "tweaks" to it over the years. The proposed change is more of another "tweak" than a full blown revision.We look at issues where we receive a lot of requests for a variance. If a lot of people want a variance from the samething, there must be a problem with the ordinance itself, so we look at revising it to hopefully make it work better aswritten. Potentially the biggest change is in the sign ordinance. The primary effect would be on businesses. If you lookat a lot of local news, you'll notice signs always cause issues for a city. A lot of lawsuits are filed over signs. ForAlabaster, we have to choose something that will not put new businesses at a disadvantage from what's been in placefor 50 years. As with any change, we try to make it better than it was and better for the city in the long run.

LT. PAT CONN Lt. Pat Conn has been

with the Alabaster FireDepartment now for tenyears. One of the best thingsabout it, he said, is simplybeing able to help people inthe community.

“I enjoy helping otherpeople,” said Conn. “I likethe fact that we have anopportunity to directlyimpact people’s lives in atangible way that you cansee. If we go out and some-one has a broken arm orbroken leg and we’re able tohelp them, you get a goodfeeling from being able tohelp.”

Conn is a company offi-cer at Fire Station No. 3,which means he oversees ateam that responds to vari-ous types of emergenciesaround the city.

“I have three guys thatwork directly under mysupervision,” said Conn.“We respond to medicalemergencies, fires, wrecks,that sort of thing.”

According to Conn, thecrew includes an apparatusoperator, which is the onewho drives the truck, plustwo firefighters and himself.

In his particular shift, threeof the four are also para-medics.

“We all have EMS train-ing,” said Conn, “but threeof us on this particular shiftat this station are also para-medics.”

These days, most of theemergency calls pertain tosome form of medical emer-gency.

“Probably 80 percent ofwhat we do are EMS calls,”said Conn. “Over the years,the Fire Department’sbecome kind of a catchall.Initially it started out asfires only, but probablysince the ‘70s it’s become alot more. We do things likeHazmat response, technicalrescues, rope rescues, con-fined spaces, all those typesof things. And it evolves.There’s more and more thatwe do as the years go on.”

Before joining theAlabaster department Connworked for five years inBirmingham. Prior to thathe volunteered for the firedepartment in Montevallo,which is also where he wentto college.

“I had started volun-teering with the depart-ment there, and I was like,I wonder if I can make acareer out of this,” saidConn. “I put myselfthrough paramedic school,while I worked another job.I did that for about a yearand a half, and then I wasfortunate enough for thecity of Birmingham to hireme.”

When he’s not at the firestation, Conn enjoys spend-ing time with his family,which includes his wife,Amy, and three kids,Ruston, Brett, and Cara.His youngest, Cara, 3, hasDown’s syndrome, so thatsometimes requires provid-

ACCC SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT MAY 6-8 The Alabama

Community CollegeConference (ACCC) softballtournament is returning toAlabaster again this year forits annual state tournament.The tournament is sched-uled to begin Friday, May 6and run through Sunday,May 8. It will be held atVeterans Park and featuresome of the state's top colle-giate softball talent.

Last year's winner,Wallace State-Hanceville,finished second in thenation at the National JuniorCollege Athletic AssociationSoftball NationalChampionship, and theWallace State coaching staffwas named the NationalFastpitch CoachesAssociation (NFCA)Coaching Staff of the Year.The squad finished the year

62-9 and placed three play-ers on the LouisvilleSlugger/NFCA All-American Team.

Alabaster has proven tobe a great fit for the colle-giate tournament as it offersan excellent combination offacilities and location.

"I think we're in a goodlocation as far as all theteams traveling to the area.We're pretty much centrallylocated, and also the area ingeneral has a lot to offer,"said Parks and RecreationDirector Ricky Nance.

In past years, the ACCCtournament has started onSaturday, but this year thegames will begin on Friday,with a kickoff banquet to beheld on Thursday, May 5 atMeadow View Elementary.The changes should helpfacilitate travel plans for the

fans and teamsthat will be travel-ing to Alabasterfor the event.

"We've gotgames on Friday,Saturday andSunday now, soit's basically aweekend tourna-ment," said Nance.

According toNance, this is thelast year of thecurrent hostingagreement, so it'sunknown whetherAlabaster will hostthe tournament again in thefuture.

"It comes up for bidagain in June," said Nance.

The ACCC is comprisedof 22 different colleges fromaround the state, includingJefferson State, Central

NATIONAL DOG SPECIALTY EVENT A BIG SUCCESSThe Parks & Recreation

Department hosted theCurly-Coated RetrieverClub of America NationalSpecialty this April, andaccording to organizers, theevent was a tremendoussuccess.

"The city has just reallyembraced this, and itcouldn't be better," saidBuck Buchanan, the chairfor the event. "I've had agreat time and everybodyhas loved the city ofAlabaster. Everybody saidthat this was the best spe-cialty they may have beento in 20 years."

Curly-coat owners liter-ally traveled from all overthe country to participatein the five-day event,which included two days atVeterans Park and one dayat Limestone Park.

"We've got people herefrom Alaska. We've gotsome folks here fromSweden. We've got folkshere from south Florida,New York, Minnesota. Thewhole of North America hascome to Alabaster," saidBuchanan.

The curly-coated retriev-er is an uncommon breedthat's distinguished by thesmall, tight curls in its coat.Buchanan, who is also a vet-erinarian at the AirportVeterinary Hospital inCalera, said that he's ownedcurly-coats since the early'90s.

"He loves this breed,"said his wife Connie, whoalso oversaw the hospitalityfor the event.

The turnout for the spe-cialty included approxi-mately 80 curly-coated

retrievers, alongwith a number ofother breeds thatparticipated in theagility competitionon Tuesday.

"A lot of thesefolks are using thisas their vacation.It's real positive,"said BuckBuchanan. "All theparticipants here,they loveAlabaster, and theylove the logistics ofhow everything isset up, from thehotel to the showsite to the field site,back to the hotel.Everything they need isjust right there."

The event was the firstof its kind for the Parksand Recreation

Department, which ParksDirector Ricky Nance saidwas a good thing.

"The more variety wehave at the parks, the moreit brings in people who

in Alabaster was the site ofthe Shelby County SpecialOlympics Track and Fieldevent on Friday, April 8.Special athletes gatheredfrom all over Shelby Countyto participate in a range ofathletic competitions includ-ing wheelchair races and thesoftball throw.

"It went great," saidShelby County Adaptive PEteacher Valinda Pate. "It wasprobably our best year ever."

The event drew about 200participants from over 30Shelby County Schools.

"It is so inspirational tosee the faces on these kidswhen they participate in thisevent," said State Sen. CamWard of Alabaster. "Thisonce a year program shinesthe light on so many beauti-ful people in our communi-ty."

Alabaster Parks andRecreation staff lent their

support to the event, pro-viding assistance with theaudio system and donatinginflatablesfor thekids.

LOCAL MARINE SERVING IN AFGANISTAN These days many mili-

tary families are experienc-ing what it's like to have aloved one serving overseas,and Alabaster families areno exception. One suchfamily is the Kabcenel fam-ily, whose son Ryan is cur-rently serving inAfghanistan with theUnited States MarineCorps.

Ryan, a former studentat Thompson High School,is the son of Andrew andDebra Kabcenel ofAlabaster. His wife Adrianand one-year-old sonDillon also live inAlabaster.

Ryan joined the Marinesin January of 2010 and hassince risen to the rank oflance corporal. His mother

Debra said that serving inthe military was alwayssomething that Ryan want-ed to do.

"He's always wanted tobe in the Marine Corps,"said Debra. "He wanted toserve his country. It's also asteady income. So he joinedfor lots of different reasons,but he's always wanted todo this."

After serving statesidefor a year, Ryan wasdeployed to Afghanistanthis past January.

"He's doing good," Debrasaid. "But his job is prettyintense. It is combat."

Having a loved one over-seas is a point of pride formilitary families, but it canalso be stressful.

"The military is wonder-

ful, but it's a whole differ-ent life," said Debra. "Wedo a lot of praying."

JOSH CARDEN PROJECT HOLDS GROUNDBREAKING The team behind the

Josh Carden Project recentlyheld a ground-breaking on anice, quiet lot in Alabasterto kick off the constructionof a brand new home forJosh Carden and his family.

The group of volunteers,who came together in thewake of a tragic accidentthat killed Carden's grand-father, hope to have thehome completed and readyto move into by the end ofthe school year.

"It's going to be about2,500 square feet," said JeffBrooks, one of the volun-teers behind the project."This house has been specif-ically designed for Josh'sfamily. It's really great. It'severything he deserves andeverything I think he needsin a home."

Carden, a senior atThompson High School, hascerebral palsy and is con-fined to a wheelchair. Thenew house has beendesigned to accommodatethe specific needs associatedwith that, such as a raisedbathtub and larger hallways.

"This houseis custom-designed for thefamily," saidBrooks. "In fact,we've madesure there's afive-foot turn-ing radius inevery cornerthat there couldbe. So it worksout really well."

According toBrooks, aThompson

High School fundraiserraised about $12,000 forJosh's family, so he feels it'simportant to see the projectcompleted before the schoolyear ends.

"The Thompson HighSchool kids were able to

raise about $12,000 for thisfamily within about fourdays," said Brooks. "Theystarted this by doing that,so they should be able tosee it finished. Josh is asenior, and a lot of hisfriends are also seniors thathelped do this. To see thisfinished before they gradu-ate is pretty important. It'san amazing story."

1. RESOLUTION REGARDING CONCESSIONS CONTRACT WITHALABASTER SPORTS ENTERTAINMENT FOUNDATION FOR PARKSAND RECREATION. Council Member Brakefield, in accordance withResolution No. 021711-B, made a motion to allow Mayor Frings to enterinto a non-exclusive concession agreement/contract with AlabasterSports Entertainment Foundation for our Parks and RecreationDepartment. Council Member Ryals seconded. Voting - Ayes: SophieMartin, Rick Walters, Scott Brakefield, Tommy Ryals and Adam Moseley.Nays: None. Motion carried. 2. APPLICATION FOR A 150 SPECIALRETAIL LICENSE FOR SOUTHERN WINGS 4 LLC (BUFFALO WILDWINGS), 840 COLONIAL PROMENADE PARKWAY. Council MemberMartin introduced an application for a 150 Special Retail License fromSouthern Wings 4 LLC (Buffalo Wild Wings), 840 Colonial PromenadeParkway. This is a one-day event to celebrate their fifth year in opera-tion within Alabaster. Council Member Martin made a motion to approvesaid application for Buffalo Wild Wings with Council Member Waltersseconding.
