1.8 Training, Consultancy and Services

AKUATROP regularly organized short courses, trainings and workshop. Short term courses were held to provide hands-on training to entrepreneurs, farmers, officers and other interested individuals. The main objective of this course is to enable the participants to master basic technique of the relevant subjects.

Training and workshop organized by AKUATROP mainly focused on the application and hands-on practical which are guided by local or foreign experts.

Short-term trainings provided by AKUATROP are as follows:

No Courses/ Training / Workshop Duration

1 Live Feed Culture 5 days

2 Water Quality Analysis for Aquaculture Purposes 5 days

3 Basic Disease Diagnosis for Aquatic Organisms 5 days

4 Aquaculture Seed Production 14 days

AKUATROP also provides consultancy and diagnostic services to farmers particularly diagnostic of disease, determination of feed quality, water and soil quality services. 1.9 Facilities in AKUATROP

AKUATROP support various aquaculture research areas through its laboratories that comprised of Aquatic Organism Health Laboratory, Fish Nutrition Laboratory, Aquaculture Biotechnology Laboratory as well as Soil and Water Quality Laboratory. All laboratories are fully equipped with latest equipments to facilitate research activities. There are also marine and freshwater hatcheries.

1.9.1 Marine Hatchery

AKUATROP’s Marine Hatchery is located at the back of AKUATROP main office. This marine hatchery is fully equipped with continuous seawater supply, aeration system, various culture tanks of multiple sizes, aquariums, generator set back-up system and other hatchery facilities. Marine Hatchery is divided into five units and they are:

AKUATROP Marine Hatchery is located near to cabin laboratory and earthened pond.

Re-circulating Aquaculture System Unit (RAS)

This unit consists of a few units of re-circulating systems to culture grouper and other species. This unit is equipped with protein skimmer system, UV light, aeration system, water supply (marine and freshwater), and fiber tanks for culture.

Crustaceans Unit

Crustaceans Unit was built in order to fulfill the demand of AKUATROP’s expanding research area. A semi-closed hatchery was built equipped with more than 20 culture tanks, sand filtration system, water supplies and blower for continuous aeration.

This Re-circulating Aquaculture System Unit (RAS) was equipped with protein skimmer and UV light in order to maintain good quality of recirculated water.

Marine Ornamental Units

There are two marine ornamental units in AKUATROP Hatchery. These two units are used for culturing various marine ornamental organisms for research purposes. Some of the species cultured in these units are anemone, clown fish various species and corals. These units are fully equipped with glass aquariums, re-circulating water system, water supply, freezer, aeration, and other facilities.

False clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) and tomato clown fish (Amphiprion frenatus) were successfully bred in captivity at Marine Ornamental Units.

Seaweed and abalone Unit.

In this unit, the area was designed to fulfill the need in culturing abalone and seaweed. There are fiber tanks, aquariums with racks, filtration systems, continuous aeration supply and water supply.

Seaweed and abalone Unit was equipped with several units of fiber tanks and aquariums.

Large Crustaceans Unit was built to fulfill the demand of crustaceans research.

1.9.2 Freshwater Hatchery

This hatchery is also known as Malaysian Mahseer Hatchery or Kelah Hatchery which is located near to the Netloft Unit. This hatchery was built with 9 concrete tanks for broodstocks culture. These concrete tanks were equipped with recirculating water system, UV light and two sand filtration system to ensure clean water supply. This hatchery has eight units of raceways for nursing the Malaysian Mahseer larvae, six units of fiberglass tanks, grower concrete tanks with sand filtration system, UV light and a number of tanks for quarantine and sampling activity. This hatchery also have two chiller units for cold water supply, water supply tanks, two unit blower for continuous aeration, and one unit of generator set backup system. In order to accommodate more research, AKUATROP is now building a nursing area which will be equipped with nursing tanks, filtration system, water supply, aeration supply and other necessary facilities.

Kelah Broodstock Management Unit is equipped with a 50 ton rounded concrete tank with recirculating water–chilling system to ensure the water temperature is similar with the kelah’s

natural ecosystem.

1.9.3 Rented Earthen Pond at Maras

These earthen ponds were rented from a local villager in Maras. Four units of earthen ponds were used in culturing marble goby and tilapia. A few nursing unit known as “hapa” were built in these earthen ponds to place eggs of marble goby.

The rented ponds were used to culture marble goby and tilapia.

1.9.4 Laboratories and Equipments

In order to fulfill the need of research in AKUATROP, a cabin laboratory attached with mini project hatchery unit was built. This cabin laboratory host five laboratories which are Life Feed Culture Lab, Nutrition Lab, Advanced Microscope Lab, Fish Disease Lab, and Soil and Water Quality Lab. AKUATROP also has a Biotechnology Lab shared with IMB as a smart partnership where AKUATROP used the space given by IMB to place AKUATROP’s biotechnology equipments.
