The seven universities of the upper Rhine regionStrasbourg (I, II, III), Mulhouse, Basel, Freiburg and Karlsruhe joined together in 1989 to form a cross-borderfederation under the name European Confederation of Upper Rhine Universities (EUCOR).
Aim: facilitate and promote co-operation in all fields of education and research
EUCOR-URGENT, initiated in 1999, is a collaborativenetwork of 25 Universities and governmental agenciesfrom Germany, France, the Netherlands and Switzerland, whose focus is on the seismic hazards and neotectonics in the Upper Rhine Graben and surrounding areas, as well as on the management of the water resources of theQuaternary graben fill.
No own money; coordinated FP5 project ENTEC (2000 –2004); ESF-support for workshops.

EUCOR-URGENT expired in 2008 and evolved into TOPO-WECEP, a wider international co-operation.
Research Area: West and Central European Platform, extending from 58N latitude to the Pyrenean and Alpine-Carpathian deformation fronts in theSouth and from Poland to the British Isles (intraplate domain of West and Central Europe)
No own money; has to encourage national and international research projects.
TOPO-WECEP is organized by national coordinating committees: Ireland, U.K., France, BENELUX, Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Switzerland

Ø Agreement about GNSS processing strategies;
Ø precise estimations of horizontal and vertical movements in the Upper Rhine Graben area;
Ø Web-based presentation of results and products.
Research coordinated in the framework of the transnational project TOPO-WECEP (West and Central European Platform).
