"For instance, in 'Lucknow Central', there are se- quences where I suggested to do a scene in a certain way to build an emotional connection with Punjabi audience. We did that. I think just putting a turban on head and changing the language from Hindi to Punjabi does not make a one a Punjabi. Punjabi da dil hona chaida (you need the heart of a Punjabi)," Gippy added. It's you all in this room who should be offended. It's not just ignorance, it's also racist. "Two people of similar colour are not the same people. So, you as fellow Indians should actually be calling them out and educating them instead of encouraging it," Deepika told reporters at the L'Oreal event today. When asked what could be the reason behind this confusion, she says, "Ignorance is ignorance. I feel bad for them." Recently Priyanka had said that it was not fair to mistake Deepika for her. "I guess I'm the most popular brown face that everyone has known. Every brown girl does not look the same. Don't mistake it. Let's try and tell us apart. That was not right and it's not fair. She's a massive star from India," she had said. INDIA PRODUCED A DOMINANT PERFORMANCE AND PUT THE 1-0 DEFEAT TO MALAYSIA BEHIND THEM TO WIN BRONZE AT THE SULTAN AZLAN SHAH CUP. Karnataka bats- man Manish Pandey pipped young chinaman Kuldeep Yadav as the 15th member of the touring party. Rohit, who has recovered from a thigh injury, made a comeback as selectors gave due weightage to his round the year performance. Shami is making a comeback to the 50-over squad having last played an ODI during 2015 World Cup semi- final. Overall, the selection panel, headed by MSK Prasad, kept faith in the squad which defeated England in a home series earlier this year. MANTOSTAAN: STRONG PORTRAYALBUT LACKS EMOTIONS

Director Rahat Kazmi's Mantostaan flogs the 1947 Indo-Pak par titiontragedy to the hilt, with legendary writer Sadat Hasan Manto's fourshor t stories; Khol Do, Thanda Gosht, Assignment and Aakhiri Salute. These tales set in Amritsar, Lahore and Kashmir, though not con-nected, run parallel, giving you a disposition of the rugged times. Each story is subtly layered with human ironies that mock blatantly. While the stories unveil the hypocrisy and hypocrites of the societyduring the trying period, the film does nothing much, other than por-tray the factual in a stark manner, which is dark, violent and brutal.Khol Do is the story of Saina and her father - Sirajuddin, who areseparated in the frenzy only because Sirajuddin insisted on retrievinghis daughter's dupatta so that she can cover her body according totraditions. The result of Saina's physical and psychological traumathereafter, is her father's nightmare.Thanda Gosht deals with the torrid and over tly sexual relationshipbetween Ishar Singh and Kulwant Kaur. Their relationship is purelyand ruthlessly physical. But it is Ishaar's cold and callous attitude inthe relationship that leaves him psychologically marred and physi-cally cold. Assignment is a bonding story of a Muslim ex-Judge andhis Sikh friend. How after the death of the Sikh, his son continues thetradition of sending sweets to the Muslim family even during toughmoments, forms the crux of this tale.Set on the Indo-Pak border, in the Peer Pranjal Range of Jammu andKashmir, Aakhri Salute is the story of two childhood friends RamSingh and Nawab. Both are soldiers serving their respective armies, one Indian and the other Pakistani. How their joi-de-vivre is cut shor t

by a tragedy formed by a par tition caused by religion, is the hear t ofthis episode. While the stories fluctuate from intriguing to dramatic, there are scenes where you momentarily connect with the charactersfor their plight. The direction is a tad amateurish, but the performancesof the ace actors is what keeps this production afloat. One can wit-ness credible per formances especially from Raghubir Yadav asSirajuddin, Sakshi as Sakina, Virendra Saxena as the ex-judge MilanSahab, Sonal Seghal as Kulwant Kaur, Tariq Khan as the Indian soldierRam Singh, Rahat Kazmi as the Pakistani soldier Rabi Nawaz and Shoib Shah asIshar Singh. On the technical front, with moderate production values, the filmmanages to exude a fairly appealing look, with Amar Jeet Singh's productiondesigns. The sets and locales are bare minimum, yet realistic. The screenplay byRahat Kazmi does not mesh the four distinct stories seamlessly, butnever theless, the narrative is smooth and far from jarring. That isbecause of the fine sound design and the astute laying of the visualswith sound by film editors Sandeep Singh Bajeli and Dr. Bhanu PratapSingh. The background score in a few scenes creates an impact, butotherwise it is a bit jarring. Overall, "Mantostaan" which mean'sManto's place is decently presented.

The magic, the chemistry happened between them asthey are good actors. It all came from them and I am lucky tocapture it all," Akshay told PTI. According to Akshay, bothParineeti, 28, and Ayushmann, 32, are fantastic actors, whohave different working style."They both have their own strengths. Ayushmann has an en-dearing quality, he has that innocence in his eyes and Parineetiis spontaneous and works instinctively," he adds. Producer ofthe film Maneesh Sharma says both the actors were the firstchoice for the lead roles. "The casting process did not lastlong. We approached them in January and by May we star tedrolling. Both of them were excited to do the film," he says.Directing "Meri Pyaari Bindu" is a dream come true for Akshay, who has been an assistant director on films like "Water" and"The Namesake". When filmmaker Aditya Chopra, head of YashRaj Films, asked Maneesh if he had any director in mind for"Meri Pyaari Bindu", the latter suggested Akshay's name. When I returnedto Mumbai we both did meet and had this feeling that we mightwork together one day," Maneesh says.

To criticise the way I dance islike slamming MJ: Tiger ShroffMUMBAI, (IANS) Actor Tiger Shroff has reacted to filmmakerRam Gopal Varma's "potshot" at him saying that criticisinghim for his style of dance is like pointing fingers at the talent ofa legend like the late Michael Jackson. Varma had earlier thismonth tweeted and hit out at Tiger, tagging his style effemi-nate. Sometimes, he has also been told he dances like a girl.Commenting on that, Tiger, an ardent MJ fan, said in an inter-view GQ India May 2017 issue: "The concept of femininity andmasculinity is stereotyped. To criticise the way I dance is to criticisethe likes of Michael Jackson, James Brown and Hrithik Roshan. (But)some people like to take potshots at me." The young actor, who has flexiblemoves, has also paid a tribute to Jackson with a piece in his upcoming film"Munna Michael". Tiger, son of Jackie and Ayesha Shroff, has grown upamid the glitz and glamour of the film industry, but unlike many stars whoparty hard often, Tiger he says he finds himself a misfit in a bar. "I've hadrum in chocolates, and it's disgusting," the teetotaller said, adding: "I feelextremely out of place and awkward in a bar. I don't feel likebeing there." He recalled: "I remember all of the dark times. One by one, things in the house would disappear. My parentstried to protect me from all of it, we never spoke about it, but Iknew we were in trouble. I would also read stuff in the media."

Hindi films havelost touch withIndian culture:Asha Parekh

BY SHUBHA DUBEYNEW DELHI, (PTI) Having ruledthe silver screen for around twodecades as the quintessentialgirl-next-door in a series of hits, veteran actress Asha Parekhtoday rues the fact that Hindifilms have lost touch withIndian culture. The 74-year-oldyesteryear star of hits like "KatiPatang", "Aya Sawan Jhoom Ke"and "Caravan" says even thesongs and dance sequenceslack the cultural influenceunlike the films of the past."Technically, we have becomesuperior and can compete withany Hollywood film. But the onlysad par t is that we have becometoo westernised. Hindi films havelost touch with the Indian culture. EvenBollywood dance sequences lackthe impression of our Indiandances. It is dying, which is dis-heartening."The music and the lyrics today areso different. There are some songswhich are nice, but the rest of themusic is not something which willbe memorable," Parekh told PTI.The actress says she does not likethe concept of remixes but is finewith remakes, provided they aredone tastefully. "I don't like thewhole culture of remixes. My song'Kanta Laga' was ruined. I don't likethis at all. But I am fine with re-makes if they are nicely made."Parekh added: "I give full creditto actors today for choosingtough roles. They work reallyhard and it is commendable howthey deal with the paparazzi. Ican't imagine myself doing all thisand dealing with the social me-dia and tabloid culture," she says.

"It feels amazing. I honestly did not expect it," Sonam told IANS over phonewhen asked about how she feels about getting the honour.Asked if a National Award will open more doors for content-driven films for her, Sonam said: "I think I have been doing content-driven filmsfor a couple of years right now, but obviously it (National Award) is an encouragement to doing more of them." The 31-year-old actress, whowill receive the award in the capital on Wednesday, said it is very impor tant for her."It is such a a huge validation for doing a film like 'Neerja', but at the same time it was more impor tant to make a film like 'Neerja' which spokeabout human spirit and compassion. A film like 'Neerja' winning an award says that human spirit and human compassion and kindness at theend of the day should be our purpose," she said. Sonam will be accompanied with her father and actor Anil Kapoor and mother Sunita for theevent. "My parents are coming with me. I think they are very excited. TV has done more for women empowerment than films: Ekta KapoorMUMBAI, (PTI) Producer Ekta Kapoor says no matter how much the "intellectuals" look down upon the daily soaps, small screen has donemore for women empowerment than movies. "TV has done way more for women empowerment than any film has. It has created an industrythat is by, for and about women. It has put female characters on front. You cannot have a problem if the antagonist and protagonist is a woman,"Ekta told PTI. Her shows like "Hum Paanch" chronicled five oddball sisters taking up challenges and emerging victorious, followed by theimmensely popular "Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi", "Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki" and "Kasauti Zindagi Kay" which showed women par ticipatingin household decisions. "Marital rape, domestic violence, cancer awareness, older people getting jobs, everything has been dealt with on TVfirst. Tulsi (popular character from 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi') shot her son for marital rape, we might've done a dramatic spin-off to getattention of people but we put a point out there."If you're missing the point, and going after the presentation...Women wearing over the top makeup then you're actually the myopic one," sheadds. Ekta says through her TV shows she has raised several socially relevant topics but people have overlooked them. "The myopicness isin their mindset. Not once has anyone mentioned that India has done a transgender show on TV and brought issue on a large scale. It's not myshow but it's admirable. If you want to have a factual argument, come and talk to me and you will lose," she says.Ekta says nitpicking on "presentation" of women while missing the core point of a show is problematic and is nonchalant about cer tain sectionof the audience who find her content regressive. "That's only the intelligentsia, the masses put them down very nicely," Ekta says about thecriticism. The film-TV producer says the "intellectuals" are quick to label anything commercial as nonsense and laud an off-beat project.
