MEMORIAL DAY

On behalf of Fr. Norm and staff we wish all of you a blessed and safe Memorial Day weekend! The office will be closed Monday, May 29.

A NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR On this Memorial Day weekend we remember in a special way all those who have given their lives for the cause of peace, justice, and freedom.

If you know anyone from our parish currently in the military, please let us know at the parish office. We want to remember them and pray for them in a personal way. We will place their names on one of our church bulletin boards to remind us to pray specifically for them. We also remember all our departed loved ones who sacrificed on a daily basis to care for us, to show us by their example how to follow the Way of Jesus, the way of other-centered love. Please consider coming to Mass on Monday, Memorial Day at 9 a.m. What a significant and meaningful way to make this national holiday a genuine holy day of remembrance, of gratitude, and of deepening our awareness of the “Communion of the Saints.” There will be no 6:30 a.m. Mass that day. As the summer season is upon us, let us remember that Jesus walks with us 24/7 as our risen Lord and best friend. May his presence be our greatest source of strength, hope, and inspiration.

“THE EUTHANASIA DECEPTION: WE ARE ALL VULNERABLE.”

Right to Life of Northeast Ohio will be presenting the movie on Wednesday, June 7th, 2017, at 7 pm at their office, located at 572 W. Market St. Akron, OH 44303. This hour-long documentary features powerful testimonies from Belgium, Canada and beyond of lives devastated by the false ideology of ‘mercy killing.’ Register online at www.righttolifeofnortheastohio.com or call 330.762.2785.

DISCIPLES FOR THE DYING The next First Friday Mass will be at St. Bernard on June 2 at 12:10 pm.

The schedule is as follows: St. Vincent, July 7, at 6:30 a.m.

St. Sebastian, August 4, at 5 p.m. All are welcome!

FAMILY PERSPECTIVES

Catholic families seek eternal life by knowing and teaching what Jesus tells us: “Now this is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus

Christ.” Remember to pray, and to talk about God, Jesus, faith and eternal life often so children learn the ways and language of faith.

ST. VINCENT de PAUL ELEMENTARY St. Vincent de Paul Parish School is getting ready for summer! Our last day of school was Friday, May 26, 2017.

If you need assistance over the summer, please contact the school via [email protected] or feel free to leave a voicemail at 330-762-5912. Although some of our classes are enrolled to capacity, we do have a few openings for enrollment; please contact us if you are interested! The office will open again on September 5, 2017. The first day of school will be September 7, 2017. Have a safe and happy summer!

REMEMBER ME

How often do you get to spend alone time with God? Just think about it - no phone, tablet, or other distractions; just you and our Heavenly Father, together in prayer. He understands our body’s need for rest, our mind’s need for peace, and our soul’s need to be close to Him.

E-GIVING UPDATE Our Electronic giving partner recently updated its website to create a much more user-friendly site. For those who are already taking advantage of this option, please visit the new site at http://egiveusa.com/login/ to check it out. Be sure to choose “New eGive Login” and use the email address with which you originally signed up. If you do not remember your password, you can request it. If you need more assistance, there is a “Contact Us” tab to use. With the updated web site, it is even easier to select the Funds to which you want to designate your donations. You will find “Regular Offering / Contributions” and “Fr. Corrigan Tuition Assistance Fund” listed. There is also an easy drop-down menu of all the Special Collections for the year with the dates of those collections. If you are not yet using eGive, you can sign up at the web site listed above. Be sure to select “St. Vincent Church” at 164 W. Market Street in Akron as your recipient! (NOT St. Vincent de Paul!) If you have any questions, contact Connie Pacanovsky in the Business Office at (330) 535-3135 ext. 102 or at [email protected].

CATHOLIC CEMETERIES ASSOCIATION

SHARE THE HOPE

The readings for today's celebration of the Ascension of the Lord once again remind us that as Christians we are people of hope. In the second reading Saint Paul eloquently exhorts the Ephesians to enlighten their hearts so that they will know the hope and glory that come from being people who place their trust in the Lord Jesus. In the story of the Ascension, recounted in the first reading, the Lord Jesus assures the disciples that the Holy Spirit's power will come upon them. Finally, in the Gospel, the Lord lets the disciples know that their mission is to spread the hope of the gospel to all the nations. This wonderful feast keeps our eyes focused on the hope in which we were grounded on the day of our baptism. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

CATHOLIC SCHOOL SERVING STUDENTS

WITH SPECIAL NEEDS TO OPEN

IN AKRON

Eleven years before Vatican II’s Declaration of Education proclaimed that “all the baptized have a right to a Christian education,” Julie Billiart School (JB) was providing a parochial environment for children with academic and social challenges. Founded in 1954 by the Sisters of Notre Dame, JB continues to be a Christ-centered school that doesn’t see a child with special learning needs as broken, but instead, as a sacred and holy gift. After serving the northeast communities of Cuyahoga County for more than 60 years, JB is excited to announce it is expanding its mission to educate and empower children with autism, ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, specific learning challenges, and social delays to Summit County. Located at 380 Mineola Avenue in Akron, the new school is currently enrolling students, grades K-2 for the 2017-2018 school year. Expansion plans include additional classes each year until 2020, when all grades, Kindergarten through 8th, will be available. Along with a customized curriculum for each student, the school will offer small classes, low student-teacher ratio, social learning strategies, and experienced occupational and speech therapists on site. Two state-funded scholarships (the Autism Scholarship and the Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship), make JB an affordable academic option for families, conveniently located in the Akron area. “We’re so happy to be here,” said school Principal, Jason Wojnicz. “We are proud to be delivering a faith-based education in a safe and nurturing environment, especially to those children that need it most.” For more information, visit www.juliebilliartschool.org or call 234-206-0941.

HOT MEALS

Once again St. Vincent de Paul Parish is providing the meal for the working poor and homeless held at St. Bernard Church on Sunday,

June 18, Father's Day. What a wonderful way to pay tribute to our fathers! Please help us feed these 250 plus members of the Akron area.

There are two ways to help. ♦ First, consider making a donation to offset the

food purchased for the meal. Cash or check donations made payable to St. Vincent de Paul Church, marked on the envelope, "Hot Meals", may be dropped in the collection at any Mass.

♦ Second, come and work the meal with us. You must be 14 years of age or older to help serve on Father's Day. We are looking for volunteers to help us 4 - 7 p.m.

Minors must be accompanied by a parent if it is their first time working.

If you have any questions, please contact Ellen Dies at 330-535-3135 X 101 or 330-864-5484.

As we celebrate Memorial Day and enter into the summer season join thousands from across our region for a day of faith, family, and fun, all for FREE, at The FEST. Mark your summer calendar for Sunday, August 6, Noon - 10 p.m. at the Center for Pastoral Leadership in Wickliffe. For more information visit www.theFEST.us.
