Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM)Background
Akademi Laut Malaysia or
better known as ALAM is Malaysia's premier institution for maritime education and training. ALAM has two
campuses; the main campus is at the pristine Kuala Linggi, Melaka over looking the busy Straits of Melaka.
ALAM's branch campus is situated in Batu Rakit, a scenic town along the coastal line of Kuala Terengganu.
ALAM's vision is 'To Be a Leader in Maritime Education and Training'. Its mission is 'To facilitate value-added
learning via a conducive environment to our clients in the maritime industry'.
ALAM had guided more than 10 thousand of young aspirants towards a rewarding and assured maritime future and
will continue to propel forward as aspirants of world class maritime and education excellence.
The History
The story of the Academy began in 1977. The need to train and prepare Malaysians for the exciting maritime
industry was addressed with the establishment of a non-profit making body called MATES (Malaysian Training and
Education for Seamen) Foundation. Consisting of the Malaysian International Shipping Corporation Berhad (MISC)
(now known as MISC Berhad), International Shipping Carriers Hong Kong and the Malaysian Ministry of Transport
as their main promoters, the foundation soon pioneered the Maritime Training Centre (MTC) in 1977.
In 1981, the MTC was upgraded to an academy with the award of a government charter by former Prime Minister,
YAB Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and named Akademi Laut Malaysia. The Academy was subsequently
administratively placed under the supervision of the Implementation and Coordination Unit, Prime Minister's
Department.
In 1997, ALAM was privatised to Malaysian Maritime Academy Sdn. Bhd. (MMA), a consortium comprising
Malaysia International Shipping Corporation (now MISC Berhad), Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS),
Penang Shipbuilding and Construction Sdn. Bhd. and Klang Port Management Sdn. Bhd. And now, ALAM is fully
owned by MISC Berhad.
