Our Daytrip to Etowah Indian Mounds
Our club drive to the Etowah Indian Mounds
Museum was a most enjoyable activity. Under
pleasant weather, and fortified by tasty donuts,
coffee and orange juice brought by Rita
Anderson, we drove to the museum and its
scenic historic grounds near the Etowah river.
The lunch at the Longhorn Steakhouse capped
the fun of the tour.
Our thanks to Ted Anderson for arranging
the drive and especially to Rita for bringing the
goodies while Ted was in the hospital.
THE TOUCH OF GENIUS: WILLIAM
LYONS AND STEVE JOBS
Sir William Lyons and Steve Jobs were as
different externally as two persons can be,
whether in appearance, personality or
background. One was British, the legendary
founder of the Jaguar marque; the other was
American, a true giant of the computer industry.
Nevertheless, they both shared the rare quality of
genius. Webster’s Dictionary defines genius in
several ways but perhaps the one that best
describes them is this one: A person with
extraordinary intellectual power, especially as
manifested in creative activity. If we take a look
at their life-long accomplishments, the genius
factor becomes apparent in the aspects that
follow.
PERSONAL CREATIVITY - Apart from
providing leadership to their design teams, the
success of their products was mainly due to their
own hands-on involvement in technical and
styling details. Apple products, particularly i-
devices, carry the Jobs imprint, just as classic
Jaguars incorporate Sir William’s goal of
creating cars with exceptional style and
performance at a very competitive price.
CONSISTENCY AND LEGACY - The
success of their endeavors was not limited to one
or a few notable achievements but rather to a
long sequence of brilliant products that
consistently broke new ground and delighted
their customers. Their influence and legacy
continued after their deaths, judging by the
success of the recent introduction of iPhone 5
and the admirable design of post-Lyons Jaguars.
MARKET KNOWLEDGE – Steve Jobs was
famous for implementing his own vision of what
the customers needed and wanted instead of
relying on consumer panels or focus
groups…and he was invariably right. Sir
William also had that innate knowledge of what
customers expected from his Jaguars and he met
those expectations again and again.
When we carry with us our iPhones, iPads,
etc and drive off in our Jaguars, we can enjoy the
touch of genius from these men…but still
observe a warning they could both agree on:
Don’t text while driving!

Noticed at last monthly meeting: Due to the
change in how we order, our dinners were
served in a much more timely manner. Thanks
Aldo’s in accommodating our ordering changes.

Robert and Yera Reicher are on an Oriental
Tour which will end up in Australia. This two-
month tour will take them through numerous
countries, some of which I had never heard of
and certainly a mystery as to how to spell!
When they return, we'll get more information.
Marlene and Don Hart will soon be leaving
for a trip to Las Vegas, Nevada and the Grand
Canyon. They will be meeting friends from
California and Florida.
Lew George will soon be leaving to be with
his Mother for her 88th Birthday celebration at
her home on Perdido Bay. Lew’s older brother
broke his wrist and damaged his knee from a fall
caused by him jumping into his pool in the
shallow end……Lesson learned!
At the last meeting Alan Talbott gave the
report on Bob Daly. Alan and Dabney went to
see the Daly's and had a lovely visit. The good
news is that Bob is now walking better - that
surely is a step in the right direction. AJS'ers
please continue to keep both Bob and Kim in
your thoughts and prayers.
An e-mail from Jack Gibson gave forth the
news that he is going to make Texas his
permanent home, however, he will continue to
keep his membership in AJS. In fact, he will be
a member of the Texas Jaguar group as well.
Jack, just remember that whenever you and your
wife are in our area, please join us. We don't
want to lose track of you two.
Marlene Hart celebrated a birthday - and to
mark the occasion, there was a decorated cake
(with candles, too) that was served to everyone
for dessert at the last meeting. Happy Birthday!
Was so good to see Maryanne and Joel
Blackford at the last meeting. They have been
on a fantastic 2-month tour of the Eastern part of
the U.S. kayaking, bicycling, camping and
visiting friends and making new ones. In Maine,
they even went on a lobster excursion where they
caught some lobsters which were taken to a
restaurant to be cooked for their dinner.
Betty Jean and Rock Spann went to The
Cloister on Sea Island, Georgia to celebrate their
50th Wedding Anniversary on September 29th.
That's where they spent their honeymoon. How
romantic!
Does anyone know how to contact Beverly
and Bob Hicks? Several phone calls to their
home in Young Harris, Georgia have not been
successful.
We were all very happy to see Ted and Rita
Anderson at the meeting. Ted was in the
hospital for surgery; went home; then back to the
hospital. Was a scary time - but he is
recuperating and looking good.
Kathy and Glenn Michalski just returned
from a 2 1/2 week stay at their Gulf Shores,
Alabama Beach House. They said they were
very fortunate that Hurricane Issac did not do
any damage. The surge just got up to their
boardwalk and the sand dunes stopped the surge
from getting to the house.

2012 AJS Concours d’Elegance
The up-coming AJS Concours is a great
opportunity for members to see what others
members have tucked away in their garages. We
have members with some beautiful old Jaguars
that are only seen once a year at this event. I
would also like to mention that several of you
have beautiful Jaguars that you use as daily
drivers. If you are not interested in showing
your automobile in a class that is judged, I would
ask that you to consider presenting your car in
our Touring Class. This class is for viewing
purposing only, the car will not be judged. We
would appreciate having as many cars on display
as possible. Please remember this is the first
year that Hennessy is hosting this event so I
would like to have as many members and their
cars present as possible.
This year’s Concours will be held on
Saturday October 13th
at:
Hennessy Range Rover – Jaguar
1505 Mansell Road
Alpharetta, Georgia 30009
Schedule of Events:
Registration.. 10:00 to 11:30 a.m.
Judges Meeting..11:15 a.m.
Lunch.. 12:00 to 1:15 p.m.
Judging starts..1:15 p.m.
Presentation of Awards.. 3:00 p.m.
Please note: Lunch is offered at $10.00 per
person, reservations are listed on the Concours
Registration form. Please send this in as soon as
possible as a courtesy to Hennessy. They are
picking up the majority of this expense and we
need to provide them with a head count well in
advance.
Please come enjoy the lunch, the fellowship
and the day with the club. So get off the sofa,
shine up your car (you can hire that done), it will
be a great way to spend a Saturday.
Thanks in advance and we hope to see you
there,

For Ladies of the Concours only,
“High Tea at the Ritz”
Ladies this year’s Concours is offering you a
chance to have Tea at the Ritz Carlton Buckhead
and all you have to do is attend the Concours in
an appropriate hat. The hat
may be straw or felt as
long as it is a hat not a
cap or a visor. This
will qualify you to
enter your name in
the contest. If you
enter a car in the
Concours you may
enter a second time
so your chances of
being a winner are even
greater. Four names will be drawn; however you
may only win once. The date of the Tea will be
determined by the four winners. Best of luck
from Elisabeth and Kate.
Jaguars on the Green Side By Lew George, Newsletter Editor
The Jaguar XJ e will participate in an EV
rally from Brighton to London, England (From InsideEVs)
Jaguar is expected to showcase its plug-in
hybrid at the 2012 RAC Future Car Challenge in
November. The Jaguar XJ e could be the second
possible plug-in hybrid from Jaguar/Land Rover,
as there has been a plug-in Range Rover Sport e
shown at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.
According to Green Car Reports, the Jaguar
XJ e will feature the same a 2.0-liter,
turbocharged engine along with a 69kW electric
motor powered by the 12.3 kWh lithium-ion
battery pack that the vehicle was shown with at
the Goodwood Festival of Speed earlier this
year.
The combination, according to Jaguar, will
allow for a combined 61.2 miles per gallon and
only 75 grams per kilometer of CO2 which is
70% less than the current V8 model.
Jaguar also says their XJ e will be able to
travel up to 25 miles on all-electric charge and
will almost have the same performance level as
the other gas and diesel powered XJs. Top speed
is estimated at 150 miles per hour and should the
extended range Jag should sprint from 0 to 60 in
around 6.5 seconds.
The RAC Future Car Challenge is set to run
early November. Participants this year have yet
to be confirmed, however last year competitors
included the Nissan LEAF, Chevy Volt, and a
wide range of other limited run EVs.
(From CreenCarReports.com):
The greenest Jaguar we've driven here on
“GreenCarReports” is the European-market XF
2.2D, but the smooth, economical diesel
certainly isn't the limit of what Jaguar can
achieve. Despite cutting a significantly larger
figure on the road, the Jaguar XJ e plug-in hybrid
makes the fuel-sipping XF look like a positive
gas-guzzler.
For that reason, it's the perfect car to enter
the annual RAC Future Car Challenge, taking
place in London this November.
The Future Car Challenge showcases the best
of green vehicle technology, with everything
from hybrids and electric vehicles to fuel-cell
cars taking part.
The Jaguar XJ e swaps out the usual
supercharged V-8s and V-6s for a specially
developed 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder
engine, 69 kW electric motor and 12.3 kWh
lithium-ion battery pack.
That gasoline engine makes it a little
different from the Range e plug-in hybrid Range
Rover Sport we drove earlier this year, which
uses that model's 3.0-liter V-6 to supplement
electric propulsion, rather than a small gasoline
engine.
There's enough juice in the battery for a 25-
mile all-electric range, but traditional Jaguar
buyers are unlikely to be disappointed with the
car's pace either--it'll top 150mph and reach
60mph in only 6.5 seconds.
Jaguar claims combined economy of 61.2
mpg and CO2 emissions of only 75 grams per
kilometer--that's 70 percent less than the gasoline
V-8 pumps out. It's more economical than that
diesel XF too, which manages 43.5 mpg on the
European combined cycle.
Jaguar Land Rover is beginning to take a
serious look at tailpipe emissions, and aims to
reduce emissions by tackling three main areas:
Parasitic losses such as aerodynamics and rolling
resistance; vehicle weight through advanced
structures and lightweight materials; and
propulsion--combustion efficiency, hybrid
technology and electric propulsion.
The Future Car Challenge will be a very
public platform on which to demonstrate the
group's technology, and it'll allow Jaguar to
demonstrate the XJ e's capabilities in the real
world.
The 2012 RAC Future Car Challenge takes
place on the weekend of 3-4 November.
