Operator CabinThe brief from Demag cranes was to develop a new op-erator cabin for use in their various overhead cranes. Demag being a global brand wanted a cabin which was designed to meet all the safety standards and which would full fill all the operator needs and aspirations. The new concept was designed keeping in mind the ba-sic requirements of ergonomics safety aesthetics and manufacturing. Visibility and user comfort were the main parameters which drove the design. the design language was evolved to suite the manufactur-ing and aesthetic requirements of the crane.

Insights

The support for the arm was a main pain area for most of the operators

The Crane structure causing hindrance to visibility

Space inside the cabin were less

The dimensions are not according to Indian anthropocentric data.

Cleaning of glass were difficult due to fixed glasses

Instructions were provided in foreign languages

The design brief from Onida was to create a new con-cept for washing machine . India being a very large market and having a very large population at the Bop Onida wanted a new concept for entering into that segment.

Research concluded that the there were very less number of models in the lower segment and a oppor-tunity for a new product existed. Cost was also a ma-jor concern due to the target group selected.

The new concept was to sell the washing and drying motors separately. So that the customer can first buy only the washer and then later upgrade to a dryer.the washing machine has a wash motor at the bottom and the spin motor at the top. The machine has two tubs one inside the other. The spin tube rotates only when the spin motor is connected on top.

User research Insights

The users perform other tasks while washing clothes in a washing machine

Transferring of clothes into the spinning chamber is a difficult process

Semi automatic is preferred due to water shortage problem

It is difficult to complete the washing process once when the power is gone

Washing machines are kept in the bathroom or kitchen

Price Segment

Market InsightsWindow size of the machine is not a driving factor decision while buying

Pulsator gimmicks influences the customer a lot

No. of features are usually compared while buying the machine

LG and Videocon are the most selling machines

Final decision is taken at the shop

Influences – sales person, neighbors, ads, discounts, good looks plays part

Attractive advertising helps selling the products

Insights

The physical force required is too much.

The wear out of the gears and maintenance was also a major issue

Ergonomics of the user had to be improved

To create a product differentiation in the market as all the products looked the same

To bring a machine characteristic into the product through design

Final Concept

An archimedes screw is driven by the motor inside the drum. When the screw rotates in one direction it mixes the cement whereas in the op-posite direction it pushes out the material from the drum.

Advantages • No tilting of the drum required• Ergonomically easy handle• Weight is supported on the drum, so gear

wear out would be less

klear. hearing aid

The goal for the course was to sensitize with design-ing products for people with special need. To empa-thize and understand various needs and difficulties in designing products for people with specific diffi-cultiesThe hearing aid is designed as a fashion accessory targeting women above 30. The product brings a paradigm shift in the consumer’s psychology about wearing an aid. The product is designed in such a way that rather than becoming a necessity it be-comes a fashion statement to wear the hearing aid .

Display & ControlThe objective of this course was to study and analyze the display and control panel of any machine and to come up with a new design which would improve its functionality. The display which I had chosen was of an injection molding machine. Moulding machine displays are critical and chal-lenging in terms of their usage. The direct relation of the control of the machine to the production volume makes it even more critical. The project also gave a good opportu-nity to work on a moulding machine

Design of Buttons, Symbols & layout

Workflow Analysis

1:1 model made in MDF

Design of new workflow

Insights found during research

• The machine is operated by low skilled operators.• It is difficult to load the mould and operate the machine by one person.• The proximity of the control panel to the user while operating a semi operated mould.• The indicating lights and language used is confusing and misleading.

Features of the final concept

• Detachable control panel

• Text buttons are replaced by symbols which can be easily understood by the workers.

• Magnet attached on remote so that it can be kept on vertical surface of the machine while working.

• Better interface functions grouped based on the moulding operations, easiness in op-eration.

Packaging DesignThis project was done in collaboration with Aditya birla white Cements to develop a new type of package for white cements. D.I.Y ( Do It Yourself) package was designed out of corrugated sheet with laminated inner sides. The packet once opened becomes a container for mixing of cement for application. The target group was the young generation in tier I cities. After the design and presentation of the package a market research was done along with the marketing team of Birla white to obtain feedback for the new package

Final Motif Conceptualization

Inspired from NatureThe pesticide spray was designed by taking inspi-ration from the form of a cockroach which was part of the course advanced form studies. The lines and organic form were the main charac-teristics of cockroach which were inspired to make the product. Also the antenna of the cockroach were transformed into the pipe and the pump for the pesticide sprayerThe form brings in direct association of the product to the function it performs . The product could also act as a brand for the pesticide control people.

Model making

Duration : 4 weeksType of Project : Individual

The objective of this course was to make a scaled model of an existing product. I had selected a circular hand saw and made a 1:1 scale since it was more challenging in terms of precision materials like MDF, HIPS, aluminum and mild steel were used for this model. All operations like cutting, filing ,milling, turning, sanding, etc was used. My experi-ence in mould making and machining operations came in handy during this course.

Mutanto.Mutanto, is a tripod which has a heavy baseand a large radius at the bottom. Due to the weight at the bottom and the radius the tripodswings which can add motion bringing in more fun in photographs. The tripod stays straight at a slope too

Tripod in open condition can be used as a normal one

Heavy Base and the radius gives it the swinging motion

Flexi ChairThe Flexi chair was developed as part of the material explora-tion course. The objective was to use a material to its maxi-mum utility. The chair can seat up to 5 children. It also brings a fun element due to the shapes which it can achieve.
