Objective: Improving and developing regional policies related to biological streams (bio-waste, food waste, municipal and industrial sludge, agricultural residues) through increased focus on circular economy.

LHTEE Contribution: Development of criteria for recognizing the methods to introduce circular economy in regional policies and compilation of an expert paper on circular economy practices within regional policies.

EMERGE (Evaluation, control and mitigation of the environmental impacts of shipping emissions)

Objective: To quantify and evaluate the effects of potential emission reduction solutions for shipping in Europe for several scenarios and to develop effective strategies and measures to reduce the environmental impacts of shipping.

LHTEE Contribution: To be involved in characterization of abatement systems, participate in emission factors update and develop an air quality simulation model of ship plumes for various conditions.

STEP2SMART (Cross-border cooperation between island urban areas to improve environmental conditions through the use of Intelligent Transport Systems)

Objective: To improve traffic network management and environmentally-friendly transport through the development and evaluation of an original Interoperable Open Architecture System

LHTEE Contribution: To coordinate a pilot campaign in Nicosia, Cyprus, involving the deployment of the Intelligent Transport System coupled with an advanced Air Quality Management System in order to assess the air quality benefits of the pilot measures.

ZEFFIROS (Zero-waste energy-efficient agricultural communities in the GR-FYROM cross-border area)

Objective: Development of two pilot bio-gas installations in the cross-border area, assessment of their operation, productiveness with different mix of bio-waste inputs solving local disposal problems and development of business and operational models towards sustainability.

LHTEE Contribution: Review of the legal & policy framework, development of business value chain modelling, technical specifications and operational plans for the pilot bio-gas units, public survey on local capacities and training needs, technical support for pilot activities

RSENSE (Revolutionizing disease and environmental detection with portable optoacoustic sensing)

Objective: To revolutionize optical sensing with broad impacts on society, by changing the paradigm in portable sensing for early detection in healthcare and on-board automotive and environmental sensing.

LHTEE Contribution: To deliver one fluid-chamber based sPROPT sensor and perform ambient and vehicle tailpipe measurements of particulate matter concentrations. Also, to benchmark the sPROPT performance with laboratory-grade instrumentation that is routinely used for such measurements.

YADES (Improved resilience and sustainable reconstruction of cultural heritage areas to cope with climate change and other hazards based on innovative algorithms and modelling tools)

Objective: Networking in resilience of heritage areas and historic cities against environmental hazards with the aim to coordinate proper modelling tools, taking advantage of the existing expertise of beneficiaries into a synergetic plan of collaborations.

LHTEE Contribution: Targeted exchange of researchers with expertise on downscaling of high-resolution models and data, as well as multi-scale and multi-nesting air quality modeling approaches.

Objective: The development of an integrated platform that can be applied to road infrastructure to support operational and strategic decisions, addressing multi-hazard risk understanding, smart prevention and preparedness, as well as faster, adapted and efficient response.

LHTEE Contribution: Two-way coupled multi-nested local scale numerical modelling and Impact Mapping for the reliable quantification and mapping of climate and atmospheric impacts for the targeted sites.

SCIPPER (Shipping contribution to inland pollution push for the enforcement of regulations)

Objective: To implement and assess available and innovative techniques for monitoring the compliance of individual ships to existing sulphur and future NO and PM air pollution regulations.

LHTEE Contribution: To coordinate the project activities, deploy a new sensor for on-board PM emission measurement and develop new datasets of emission factors from ships and modelling tools for assessing the air quality impacts of shipping plumes.

HYPERION (Development of a decision support system for improved resilience and sustainable reconstruction of historic areas to cope with climate change and extreme events based on novel sensors and modelling tools)

Objective: To develop and deploy an integrated resilience platform based on an overarching strategy that includes risk management, protection and preparedness to prevent damages to Cultural Heritage sites.

LHTEE Contribution: Downscaling of climate and atmo-spheric composition and associated risk maps down to the 1×1 km scale, applying atmospheric modelling for climatic scenarios aiming to an accurate impact assessment of micro-climatic and atmospheric stressors.
