Introduction

This training module is designed to familiarize you with the operational aspects of an Air Start unit. You are responsible for reading and

understanding the content contained within this module. If there is any

information that you do not understand, please consult your trainer, supervisor or manager for assistance. Upon completion of this module,

if you successfully:

1. Complete module test with a score of 85% or better AND

2. Demonstrate to your trainer, supervisor or manager the safe operation of the

Air Start Unit by performing 3 check rides AND

3. Have your training file signed off by your trainer, supervisor or manager and

Yourself AND

4. Have an airport ID and applicable airport driving

test/designation/authorization

You will then be qualified and permitted to operate a Air start unit.

PRE-OPERATIONAL CHECKS

Each day the vital fluids inspection should be performed on the Air

start unit. Each station has a copy of a pre operational checklist that covers both mechanical and vital fluids inspection.

The following areas should be given attention BEFORE operating the

Air Start Unit by completing a walk around inspection. A supervisor should be notified immediately if any discrepancies are noted.

Hitch lock/ key Parking brake working properly

 Two wheel chocks Corner Bumpers

Condition of hose and coupler Fire extinguisher **( EXCLUDES DELTA AIRLINES OWNED UNITS)

Whenever the APU is inoperative the aircraft will require an air start in

order to start the engines. The air start is a pneumatic device that forces high velocity air into the aircraft to spin the fan section.

Because the engines will be starting when you perform an airstart, pre-planning where the unit is positioned is required.

In the example above, if the number 2 engine would be started the

airstart must be positioned on the aircraft left side. This is done so that no employees need to cross into the inlet ingestion zone or jet blast

areas when the engine starts.

AIRSTART

AIRCRAFT PNEUMATIC

CONNECTION POINT FOR AIRSTART

In most cases you will be performing an

airstart at the gate. A face to face briefing with the captain will prevent any

misunderstandings in hand signals, where the aircraft will be pushed to or which

engine will be started.

Positioning the Air Start

After completing a walk around

inspection on the unit, position it on the opposite side of the engine to be

started

Brake stops are required at 50ft and 10ft from the aircraft

Airstart units must NEVER be driven closer than 10 ft from the aircraft

The units must be disconnected and

should never be backed towards an aircraft with a tug

The airstart must be hand pushed until the hose will reach the pneumatic

coupling on the aircraft

** Due too the weight you may need

help with positioning the unit by hand

*** Ensure exhaust is pointed away from the aircraft

Once in position the emergency brake should be applied and tires chocked

Next the hitch lock must be placed on the unit and locked. This will prevent a pull away from occurring with the aircraft

The hose on the airstart must be completely removed from the cradle

where it is stored. Failure to do this could damage the hose.

Connect the airstart to the aircraft; always

check to insure the coupler has been seated properly.

**Failure to do so may cause the hose to

uncouple, potentially injuring someone or the aircraft

Before the high velocity air is turned on,

always check to ensure that the hose is completely unwound and has no kinks which

may restrict the air flow

The unit should be started and allowed to warm up prior to use to prevent damage from occurring.

All employees that will be assisting during the

airstart should be briefed:

1. Which engine will be started 2. Review hand signals

3. Review airline specific procedures 4. Identify who will operate unit for aircraft

engine start and disconnect

Post Engine Start

Remember there is an engine running; always use extreme care while disconnecting the airstart.

After the engine has been started and you have been signaled by the head

set operator that it is clear to disconnect, you may do so.

*Caution must be used as the coupling may be extremely hot

The hose must be completely stowed

prior to moving the airstart to ensure no damage occurs to it

With the coupler disconnected from the

aircraft, you may unlock the hitch using the key attached to the coupler

Remove the hitch lock and connect the tongue to the tug

Once the unit is connected to the tug, the parking brake may be released on the unit and the chocks removed

After returning the unit to its

designated parking position, shut

procedures may vary.

Some units are equipped with an automatic shut down feature and

others are manual. Always allow time for the unit to cool before turning off the engine to prevent damage
