removing all dirt,

dust, grease, peeling

paint or other

wall covering.

2. Repair any cracks,

chips, holes or other

surface defects. Be sure

to sand rough areas

smooth.

3. For wood, fill in any

dents or cracks in the

surface with wood

filler or wood putty.

Filler absorbs stain; putty does not.

4. Caulk all open cracks around windows and doors,

soffits and fascia.

5. Remove light switchplates and fixtures that attach

to the painting surface.

6. Use primer on all bare wood and on areas that

are stained and will be painted.

Surface PreparationProper surface preparation (prep) is essential for

a high quality finish. The amount of surface prep

required depends on the surface condition and the

material being applied. You’ll always have better

success if you spray onto a clean, dry surface.

When interior painting, always spray

in well-ventilated areas.

Sprayable Coating Determines Hole SizeYou can determine which spray tip orifice (hole) size

to use by the thickness (viscosity) of your sprayable

coating. Spray tips are labeled by their hole size

in inches.

Tip Identification

The 517 indicates the fan and hole size.The fan size is double the first digit (5),or 10 inches. The hole size (17) is 17 thousandths of an inch or .017.”

Important Things toKnow about Tip WearIt’s important to replace a tip when worn to ensure

a precise spray pattern, maximum productivity and

a quality finish. When a tip wears, the orifice size

increases and the fan width decreases.

This causes more paint to hit a smaller area, which

wastes paint and slows productivity.

Tip life varies by coating, so if a tip is worn, replace

it. Extend tip life by spraying at the lowest pressure

that breaks up the coating into a complete spray

pattern (atomize).

Do not increase the pump pressure; it only

wastes paint and causes unnecessary pump

component wear.

Recommended Spray Tip Replacement TimeLatex — Replace after 15-40 gal. (57-151 L)

Oils & Stains — Replace after 35-60 gal. (132-227 L)
