Twyla Tharp is no ordinary person One look at her bio and you get that Itrsquos not just the mountains of awards medals prizes fellowships and honorary degrees or the three books six films twelve television specials four Broadway shows two figure skating routines dozens of A-list collabo-rators or the 129 dances shersquos created over the past forty-eight and a half years This is an artist who gives you the impression that shersquos just getting started On her comprehensive website (wwwtwylatharporg) you can take in the extraordinary breadth of this iconrsquos life and work ldquoThe Worksrdquo are divided into five-year brackets and one already exists for the years 2015-2020 The last line of her bio reads ldquoTwyla continues to createrdquo Irsquoll say

It all began with Tank Dive a four-minute work for four choreographed in 1965 to the music of Petula Clark Therersquos even a video clip of Twyla making focused and sculptural strides into a small stage-like space A calcu-lated pause suggests a move of tremendous skill is imminent With a sudden sweeping arc of the arm a yoyo drops to the floor offering the arresting the common and a dash of the comedic all rolled into one Next comes Stage Show performed by Tharp and another dancer outside the entrance of the Alaska Exhibition during the 1965 New York Worldrsquos Fair The description on the Tharp website reads ldquoDesigned to lure passersby into the Alaska Pavilion the dancers used the cut-off paws from a bearskin rug to perform a sort of furry hootchie-kootchierdquo Yes the creative force that is Twyla Tharp was just getting started

Well 135 works later we proudly unveil Waiting at the Station This is the eighth work for PNB including the uplifting Sweet Fields performed by our students last June This is also the third work that Twyla has choreographed on our Company and itrsquos like nothing Irsquove ever seen from her or anyone else for that matter No bear paws here but itrsquos got some serious moves and some crazy hats To the infec-tious rhythms of jazz legend Allen Toussaint with Santo Loquastorsquos winning vintage sets and costumes enveloped in Jim Ingallsrsquo

atmospheric lighting we are transported to another time and place On this textured canvas Twyla makes her mark letting singular movement reveal story and spirit That other place becomes another world

Opening AIR TWYLA is Brief Fling Twylarsquos 1990 creation for American Ballet Theatre Brief Fling takes classical structure and technique as a jumping-off point and launches into the realm of the asymmetrical and the unexpected The dancers are clad in Isaac Mizrahirsquos sexy plaids which still show plenty of muscle A word of appreciation goes to Matthew Dibble who staged this work with true clarity Completing the triple bill is an audience favorite here in Seattle and around the worldmdashTwylarsquos 1982 classic Nine Sinatra Songs Paul Gibson set the work this time around with help from Matt after Shelley Washingtonrsquos original staging

AIR TWYLA is an appropriate finale for a year of work and collaboration with PNBrsquos first A-I-R (Artist-in-Residence) which began half a world away in Spoleto Italy with an all-Tharp program In the Upper Room made a welcome return last March while Twyla developed material for Waiting at the Station and cast Sweet Fields Press interviews meetings with the staff and patrons work with the costume and scenic shops a choreographerrsquos reception a brilliant lecture-demonstration a few hundred emails and phone calls with me plus three weeks of Tree Frog classes (thatrsquos Tharp Technique to you) and it was quite a year My sincere appreciation to Peggy and Peter Horvitz for recognizing the importance of bringing Twyla to PNB and making this residency possible Patrice and Kevin Auld also deserve thanks for their generosity and hospitality

I know wersquoll see Twyla in Seattle again because not only does Seattle love Twyla but she seems to like us too Thank you Twyla for bringing your energy wit wisdom and quotable quotes and above all thank you for continuing to create

We are thrilled to open the 2013-2014 season with AIR TWYLA Twyla Tharprsquos collaboration with PNB now spans eight years Ms Tharp is the first artist to engage with PNB under our new Artist- in-Residence program launched last season Please join me in thanking Peter amp Peggy Horvitz for underwriting our first Artist-in-Residence affiliation with Ms Tharp as well as generously sponsoring Waiting at the Station the world premiere you are about to enjoy

The remainder of the season is full of treasures Both classical full-length and contemporary ballets abound In addition to The Sleeping Beauty and A Midsummer Nightrsquos Dream we are thrilled to bring the romantic-era full-length Giselle back to our stage this time with new scenic and costume designs by Jeacuterocircme Kaplan designer of Jean-Christophe Maillotrsquos Romeacuteo et Juliette In between these audience favorites you will see additions to PNBrsquos diverse repertory including works by Jiri Kylian and Crystal Pite and a world premiere by Alejandro Cerrudo Additionally wersquore looking forward to revisiting Susan Stromanrsquos TAKE FIVEhellipMore or Less and Molissa Fenleyrsquos tour-de-force solo State of Darknes set to Stravinskyrsquos The Rite of Spring

Since the news was released at the very end of last season I want to make sure you know that D David Brown PNBrsquos stellar executive director for the past thirteen years has plans to grand jeteacute into retirement at the end of this season He is PNBrsquos rock and we will miss him When you see David around McCaw Hall throughout the season please thank him for the devotion and level-headed guidance he has provided our organization for over a decade We are hard at work trying to fill his big shoes Second Joe Norman leaves his role as president of the Board of Trustees and is replaced by the incredibly

wise and capable David Hadley There is hardly a trustee who has crossed the threshold of the Phelps Center who cares and advocates for PNB its dancers and its students more than Joe has His thoughtful reasoning and deep generosity have been a constant inspiration for me Fortunately hersquos not going far he remains on the board and is at almost every single PNB performance

For those of you who were able to provide additional support to PNB by joining us on our season opening night for our gala celebration ldquoFirst Look A Brief Flingrdquo we greatly appreciate your continued generosity to PNB We had a great time dining and dancing with you And to all of you we thank you for joining us for another remarkable season at Pacific Northwest Ballet Spread the word and enjoy the season

Brief Fling is Mikhail Baryshnikovrsquos last commission from Tharp during his tenure as artistic director of American Ballet Theatre The title references both the traditional Scottish dance and a short-lived romance Isaac Mizrahirsquos tartan costumes divide the dancers into clans of blue red green and off-white

In the opening section two soloist couples in red and a quartet in green punch out syncopated phrases to a military tattoo The principal couple clad in blue originally danced by Cheryl Yeager and Julio Bocca performs an extended set of variations to an English folk song backed by the ensemble dancers dressed in off-white The finale features each clan

in succession compounding into a furioso fugue

The score by Michel Colombier intersperses Percy Graingerrsquos sunny interpretations of traditional melodies from the United Kingdom with an ominous electronic score

Choreographed in 1982 Twyla Tharprsquos Nine Sinatra Songs has become a popular classic presenting its view of 1950s social dancing through the nostalgic but sharpened eyes of the 1980s Oscar de la Rentarsquos dresses and tuxedos flash with a similar double edge of past and present eras Choreographing to classic Sinatramdashincluding ldquoOne for My Babyrdquo ldquoStrangers in the Nightrdquo and ldquoMy WayrdquomdashTharp upscales traditional ballroom dancing with the active participation of the female dancer in styles ranging from tango to flamenco to exhibition disco

These performances of Brief Fling Waiting at the Station and Nine Sinatra Songs Tharptrade Ballets are presented under license with WAT Limited and have been produced in accordance with Tharptrade Standard services

Since graduating from Barnard College in 1963 Ms Tharp has choreographed more than one hundred thirty-five dances five Hollywood movies and directed and choreographed four Broadway shows She received one Tony Award two Emmy Awards nineteen honorary doctorates the Vietnam Veterans of America Presidentrsquos Award the 2004 National Medal of the Arts the 2008 Jerome Robbins Prize and a 2008 Kennedy Center Honor Her many grants include the John D and Catherine T MacArthur Fellowship She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and an Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters

In 1965 Ms Tharp founded her dance company Twyla Tharp Dance In addition to choreographing for her own company she has created dances for Joffrey Ballet American Ballet Theatre Paris Opera Ballet the Royal Ballet New York City Ballet Boston Ballet Hubbard Street Dance Martha Graham Dance Company Miami City Ballet and Pacific Northwest Ballet

Ms Tharprsquos work first appeared on Broadway in 1980 with When We Were Very Young followed in 1981 by her collaboration with David Byrne on The Catherine Wheel at the Winter Garden Her 1985 production of Singinrsquo in the Rain was followed by an extensive national tour and in 2002 Ms Tharprsquos award-winning dance musical Movinrsquo Out set to the music and lyrics of Billy Joel ran for three years and then toured nationally for three years For Movinrsquo Out Ms Tharp received the 2003 Tony Award the 2003 Astaire Award the Drama League Award for Sustained Achievement in Musical Theater and both the Drama Desk Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Choreography For the London production Ms Tharp won the Best Choreography (Musical Theatre) Award of the UKrsquos Criticsrsquo Circle National Dance Awards 2006 In 2006 Ms Tharp worked with Bob Dylanrsquos music and lyrics to create The Times They Are A-Changinrsquo which played at the Brooks Atkinson

In film Ms Tharp has collaborated with director Milos Forman on Hair in 1978 Ragtime in 1980 Amadeus in 1984 with Taylor Hackford on White Nights in 1985 and with James Brooks on Irsquoll Do Anything in 1994

Her television credits include choreo-graphing Suersquos Leg for the inaugural episode

of PBSrsquo ldquoDance In Americardquo co-producing and directing ldquoMaking Television Dancerdquo which won the Chicago International Film Festival Award and directing ldquoThe Catherine Wheelrdquo for BBC Television Ms Tharp co-directed the television special ldquoBaryshnikov by Tharprdquo which won two Emmy Awards as well as the Directorrsquos Guild of America Award for Outstanding Director Achievement

In 1992 Ms Tharp wrote her autobi-ography Push Comes to Shove In 2003 she wrote The Creative Habit Learn it and Use it for Life In 2009 she wrote The Collaborative Habit Life Lessons for Working Together Both books were published by Simon and Schuster

Michel Colombier was a French composer songwriter arranger and conductor He wrote the scores of over one hundred films as well as chamber music and ballets His eclectic and diverse credits include film hits such as ldquoHow Stella Got Her Groove Backrdquo ldquoRuthless Peoplerdquo ldquoThe Golden Childrdquo ldquoWhite Nightsrdquo and the legendary ldquoPurple Rainrdquo As a conductor Mr Colombier led many of the worldrsquos great orchestras and wrote numerous classical and symphonic commissions He also wrote the music for over twenty ballets and worked with some

of the worldrsquos greatest dance companies and choreographers including Twyla Tharp Mikhail Baryshnikov Roland Petit and Maurice Bejart

George Percy Grainger was born in Australia and made his first concert tour when he was twelve years old From 1901 to 1914 he lived in London where he befriended composer Edvard Grieg whose love of national music inspired Mr Grainger to look closely at English folk music In 1914 he moved to the United States and became an American citizen During a brief spell in the US Army Bands he created Country Gardens the work most associated with his name A prolific a composer he wrote well over 1200 works and arrangements His achievements also included pioneering work as a folk music collector educator social and musical commentator clothing designer and Free Music inventor He was a skilled linguist and became known in addition to his musical accomplishments for his forthright opinions on many subjects

Isaac Mizrahi has been a leader in the fashion industry for almost 30 years He is the recipient of four Council of Fashion Designers of America awards and he has designed for Audrey Hepburn Hillary Rodham Clinton Oprah Winfrey and First Lady Michelle Obama His designs have been seen on the red carpet worn by celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker Julia Roberts Rihanna Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen and Meryl Streep In 2009 Mr Mizrahi launched his lifestyle collection ISAACMIZRAHILIVE on QVC and he was also the creative director of Liz Claiborne New York In 2003 the designer pioneered high design for the mass retailer by partnering with the Target Corporation

University After graduation she came to New York to study dance and her interest in lighting began with a course in the subject at the American Dance Festival at Connecticut College She has been awarded two Bessies and a Laurence Olivier Award for lighting dance her work in that field includes pieces choreographed by Mikhail Baryshnikov Jiri Kylian Dana Reitz Jerome Robbins Paul Taylor and Twyla Tharp among many others In 1991 she received a Dance Magazine Award and has been a recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Theater Program Distinguished Artist Award and a grant in the National Theatre Artist Residency Program funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts Her theater work has garnered a Joseph Jefferson Award a Kudo a Drama-Logue Award two American Theatre Wing Awards an Obie two Drama Desk Awards and two Tonys for The Cherry Orchard and Jerome Robbinsrsquo Broadway She was the recipient of the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize in 2001 and the Jerome Robbins Prize in 2003 In 2008 she became a United States Artist ldquoGracierdquo Fellow and a MacArthur Fellow Ms Tipton is also on the faculty at the Yale University School of Drama

Sascha Radetsky Guest Artist (September 27-28) Brief Fling

Sascha Radetsky was born in Santa Cruz California and began ballet training in the San Francisco Bay Area with Damara Bennett and Ayako Takahashi He was invited to study in Moscow at the Bolshoi Academy at age 15 and the following year went to the Kirov Academy in Washington D C on scholarship He also attended summer programs on scholarship at the School of American Ballet American Ballet Theatre San Francisco Ballet School and the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Vail Colorado

Mr Radetsky joined American Ballet Theatre (ABT) as an apprentice in 1995 became a member of the corps de ballet in 1996 and a soloist in 2003 He has performed the principal roles in most of the companyrsquos repertory both classical and contemporary as well as created leading roles in numerous works He is an original member of the troupe ldquoStiefel and Starsrdquo and has been a frequent guest performer and teacher around the world

In 2000 Radetsky starred as Charlie in the movie Center Stage as well as Mandy Moorersquos music video ldquoI Wanna Be With Yourdquo from the filmrsquos soundtrack He has appeared in television and print commer-cials and has performed starring roles in the PBS movie Home at Last and in NBCrsquos Midnight Caller Mr Radetsky has written for Newsweek Dance Magazine Dance Spirit and World Arts Todaycom In 2008 he joined Dutch National Ballet as a principal dancer Mr Radetsky is married to ABT soloist Stella Abrera

Santo Loquasto is a designer for dance theater and film Twyla Tharprsquos Push Comes to Shove marked the beginning of a long-term relationship with American Ballet Theatre He also collabo-rated with choreographers Jerome Robbins Mikhail Baryshnikov Kenneth MacMillan Agnes de Mille James Kudelka and Mark Morris As designer for the Paul Taylor Dance Company he has designed a total of 49 pieces

AIR TWYLA In this mixed bill Pacific Northwest Ballet presents three works by its first artist-in-residence the legendary Twyla Tharp

Waiting at the Station is a world premiere commission for Pacific Northwest Ballet This new work also features a commissioned score by Allen Toussaint the New Orleans songwriter producer pianist and singer who will perform his original score with the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra Nine Sinatra Songs created by Tharp in 1982 in homage to ldquoOld Blue Eyesrdquo and ballroom dance has become a popular classic that presents a view of 1950s social dancing through the nostalgic yet sharpened eyes of the 1980s Brief Fling with music by Michel Colombier and Percy Grainger makes its Pacific Northwest Ballet premiere The piece which debuted in 1990 offers spirited movement with a Scottish motif and rounds out a program of contrasting styles for which Ms Tharp is known

Emil de Cou assumed the full-time position of Pacific Northwest Balletrsquos Music Director and Principal Conductor at the start of the

2011-2012 season He was associate conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra and conductor of the NSO performances at Wolf Trap Festival Mr de Cou debuted at Carnegie Hall as guest conductor for the New York Pops and has also conducted the orchestras of Philadelphia Chicago Houston Saint Louis Detroit Montreal and Boston Pops among others He was Principal Pops Conductor for the San Francisco Symphony and served as musical consultant for NASA In 1985 Mikhail Baryshnikov hired Mr de Cou to conduct American Ballet Theatre and in 1994 he joined the staff of San Francisco Ballet Other ballet companies he has conducted include New York City Ballet National Ballet of Canada Netherlands Dance

Theatre and Hong Kong Ballet Mr de Cou was born in Los Angeles and studied at the University of Southern California He was the subject of a documentary on National Public Radio and was chosen from 200 candidates to study in Leonard Bernsteinrsquos master class at the Hollywood Bowl

A native of Greensboro North Carolina Allan Dameron graduated from North Carolina School of the Arts and studied

conducting at the Pierre Monteux School in Maine Mr Dameron has been Music Director and Conductor for Chicago City Ballet and Assistant Conductor at Chicago Lyric Opera Prior to joining PNB he was a chamber music professor at Northern Illinois University As a chamber music pianist Mr Dameron has been a guest artist with the Vermeer and Audubon Quartets and is a member of Ariel Trio Mr Dameron performs piano solo work for PNB ballets including Dual Lish Duo Concertant Fuumlr Alina and Rubies

Norbert HerrigesTechnical Director

Norbert Herriges began working in Seattle theater after receiving a degree in Theatre Arts at Southern Oregon State College in Ashland Oregon

In 1984 he started at ACT as a scenic builder and in 1991 moved to Seattle Repertory Theatre where he worked for fifteen years as a shop carpenter and later as Scenic Coordinator In the course of his 28-year career in local theater Mr Herriges worked backstage for PNB in various capac-ities He became Interim Technical Director for PNB in February 2011 and assumed the position of Technical Director in July of 2011 Mr Herriges oversees and coordinates all technical

Larae Theige HascallCostume Shop Manager

Born in Spokane Washington Larae Hascall joined PNB in 1983 and became Costume Shop Manager in 1987 She supervises the creation alteration

and maintenance of all costumes worn in PNB productions Her own costume designs include Kent Stowellrsquos Dual Lish Quaternary Duo Fantasy Orpheus Portrait and Carmen as well as designs for guest choreographers Donald Byrd and Lynn Daly She has been the primary collaborator for costumes created by such renowned designers as Paul Tazewell (Swan Lake Seven Deadly Sins) Martin Pakledinaz (A Midsummer Nightrsquos Dream Cinderella Ballet Imperial) Theoni Aldredge (Carmina Burana) and David Murin (Silver Lining)

Otto Neubert has been PNBrsquos Ballet Master since 1991 Born in Munich Germany Mr Neubert received his training with Alex Ursuliak the

Stuttgart Ballet School the School of American Ballet and with Marika Besobrasova in Monte Carlo He danced as a soloist with New York City Ballet and at Stuttgart Ballet Mr Neubert assists the Artistic Director in teaching and rehearsing the Company and rehearses PNB School students in their roles for Nutcracker and other produc-tions He has performed as a guest artist in The Sleeping Beauty Don Quixote Swan Lake and Prodigal Son

Anne Dabrowski was named a PNB Ballet Master in 1997 Originally from San Diego California Ms Dabrowski received her training at California Ballet

School and with Truman Finney at the School of Hartford Ballet She danced professionally with Hartford Ballet and then continued there as Company Teacher and Assistant Ballet Master and as a principal faculty member for Hartford Ballet School Ms Dabrowski assists the Artistic Director in teaching and rehearsing the Company and prepares PNB School students for their roles in Nutcracker and other PNB ballets

Paul Gibson was appointed a PNB Ballet Master in 2005 Mr Gibson joined PNB in 1994 and was promoted to Principal dancer in 1996 Upon his retirement in 2004 he

A Pacific Northwest Ballet board member and supporter for seventeen years Peter Horvitz has affectionately earned the title at PNB of Uumlber Trustee Between tirelessly attending meetings as part of the executive leadership team and spearheading fundraising efforts as chair of the Major Gifts committee Peter is also a staunch supporter of PNBrsquos New Works Initiative Donors to the initiative fund the costs of creation and performance of new works at PNB

Peter and his wife Peggy have led the charge by sponsoring many of the incredible premieres you have seen at PNB in recent years They have sponsored six works in total including Christopher Wheeldonrsquos Variations Seacuterieuses Paul Gibsonrsquos Sense of Doubt and Mark Morrisrsquo Kammermusik No 3 Peter and Peggyrsquos generosity has been at the forefront of PNBrsquos effort to build a signature body of work by a variety of renowned and emerging choreographers

Over the past six months PNB has enjoyed its first ever artist-in-residence welcoming the inestimable Twyla Tharp as she choreographed a world premiere Waiting at the Station for the company Peter and Peggy have taken a special interest in supporting Twyla Tharp and they sponsored her first PNB world premiere in 2008 Afternoon Ball

2013 VAIL INTERNATIONAL DANCE FESTIVAL TOURAt the end of July 2013 Pacific Northwest Ballet returned to the Vail International Dance Festival in Colorado for the fourth time since 2007 Thirty-three Company dancers and 18 artistic staff from musicians to wardrobe staff to stage crew enjoyed the opportunity to perform alongside dancers and companies from around the globe at the Vilar Center in Beaver Creek and the Gerald R Ford Amphitheater in Vail PNB performances included Christopher Wheeldonrsquos Tide Harmonic and After the Rain pas de deux the second act of Kent Stowellrsquos Swan Lake and George Balanchinersquos Agon Apollo Concerto Barocco and Serenade We are grateful to both H David Kaplan and Mrs Patty Edwards for their part in generously underwriting PNBrsquos 2013 Vail Tour to help ensure its success and to PNB supporters Phil and Lesli Schlaepfer and Bob Benson each for providing warm and generous hospitality to PNB while on tour in Colorado

TouringVAIL INTERNATIONAL DANCE FESTIVAL JULY 28-30 2013This summer marked PNBrsquos fourth visit to the acclaimed Vail International Dance Festival in Vail Colorado The Company performed seven ballets by George Balanchine (Agon Apollo Concerto Barocco and Serenade) Kent Stowellrsquos Swan Lake Act II and Christopher Wheeldonrsquos After the Rain pas de deux and his Tide Harmonic which had its World Premiere at McCaw Hall on May 31 2013

WORKS AND PROCESS AT THE GUGGENHEIMPNB returns to the Guggenheim Museumrsquos ldquoWorks and Processrdquo series with ldquoPetipa Exotiquerdquo a program of dances by legendary French ballet Marius Petipa who often set his stories in what were exotic locales for 19th-century European audiences Revived from century old dance notation excerpts from Petiparsquos famed La Bayadegravere (India) and Le Roi Candaules (Lydia) as well as his staging of the swashbuckler Le Corsaire (Turkey) will be presented by PNB dancers with dancer historian Doug Fullington accompanied by two violinists performing from period scores in the traditional rehearsal medium of 19th-century St Petersburg Featuring Michael Jinsoo Lim and Brittany Boulding Concertmaster and Associate Concertmaster respectively of the PNB Orchestra
