Preliminary background area air sampling was conducted at the Vertac

plant work sice from August 10 to 14, 1984. Contaminants sampled for

were dioxin and total volatile organic hydrocarbons. North, south,

east, and west perimeter monitoring sites were set up at the plant

perimeters for this and subsequent area monitoring. Dioxin results are

None of the samples taken for 245-T or 24-D have been analyzed yet by ITCorporation's Middlebrook Pike laboratory in Knoxville, Tennessee due toa heavy work load. Results should be similar to those found for dioxin.

Middlebrook Pike is also doing volatile organic hydrocarbon sample

analyses, but results are not in yet for the same reasons.

Organic vapor analyzer sampling is being done continuously during sicework and has not shown any results.

All resul ts of samples not yet analyzed shall be reported as soon asthey are received.

Dioxin and volatile organics sampling shall be continued for allremaining phases of site work.

Subject Air Sampling Results - Vertac C

Sample extracts from air sampling conducted August 10 to 13, 1984, which0

consisted of background area air sampling, were analyzed for pesticides2,4-D and 2,4,5-T in addicion to dioxin (TCDD). The dioxin results werereported October 9, 1984. The results for 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T from these

samples are as follows:

Filter and reagent blanks also showed none detected.

All less-than indications show none detected. "None detected" standsfor both front and back sections of the charcoal Cubes.

Two samples fron this background sampling period were run by pulling' volumes of air through charcoal absorbent tubes. The sample numbers,

dates, and locations were:

SAMPLE NUMBER DATE LOCATION ;

<These two samples underwent a series of analyses for the following:

1. Acid extractable organics - priority pollutantanalysis

2. Base-neutral extraccable organics - prioritypollutant analysis

3. Additional organic pollutants - no extraneouspeaks detected.

(See attached results from laboratory.)

No detectable levels of any contaminants were found in these samples. All less-than indications are below the detection limit.

During the course of work activities at Vertac (pond sludge removal andslurry wall construction) conducted September 12 to September 14,sampling was conducted for dioxin and volatile organics. Dioxin resultsfrom this period have already been reported. The following are resultsfrom samples taken for volatile organics using charcoal-absorbenttubes. Tubes were analyzed for all volatile organic priority pollu-

tants. The only numbers that will appear are those of compoundsdetected.
