Problems and major sources of pollution

Bulgaria has the worst quality of air in EUChemical pollution

Effects and Impacts

Damages the health of millions of people annually

Risk is higher for older people, children, and infants

Diseases- lung cancer, heart disease, bronchitis

Air pollutants- ozone, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide (Air Pollution,Effects [3])

Page 6: Air pollution 1

Solutions

Two main types of pollution control- input and output

Input control- limits the negative effects of the pollution; more expensive and more efficient method

Output control- tries to fix the damages caused by the pollution

Current attempts- ineffective (Air Pollution Solutions [4])

Examples

Mexico City the biggest city in the world. It has suffered a drastic change in terms of air pollution. The amount of Nitrogen dioxide and ozone in the air is twice bigger

than the maximum allowed. In 1959 there was a book called “Where the air is clear” written

about Mexico City, nowadays it is one of the most polluted cities in the world. (Air Pollution in Mexico City [6])

Causes of Air Pollution in Mexico City

Main cause of air pollution is the population of Mexico City - 8,841,916 people

Old automobiles are common in Mexico city, which pollutes the air more compared to New York for example

Another main problem is that the city is surrounded by three mountains which causes the polluted air to stay in a “trap”.

There is one recycle bin for every 21 people in the city, which is one of the worst rates in the world. (Air Pollution: Control Solution [5] )

How will they stop the air pollution?

The government created a law which makes every driver required to put a gas cleaner on his car.

There is a project of a law who will make every person drive his car maximum three days a week.

The government is trying to require the companies to make fuels which do not pollute the air that much.

There is also a law which says that old cars should stay away from the roads and should not be in use because they cause air pollution. ( Air Pollution in Mexico City [6] )
