Marc h New sUn i t I nspec t i on: March 18 Fred Ham, Texas Deputy State Director of Texas

Wing, inspected the squadron. We received a favorable review, and all our

    members should be proud.

Glider O-Fl ights: Our third scheduled trip to the Gliderport on March 15 and

16 was a success! Eight cadets participated in a total of 15 glider flights over

the two-day period. The older cadets were able to demonstrate their driving

skills in a standard transmission pick up, driving the glider recovery vehicles on

the landing area. All the cadets participated in movement and recovery of

gliders. Many of the senior members attending also elected to pay for theirown demo flights, which they enjoyed. Cadet Capt. McElvaney caught the

most thermals managing to stay up for 57 minutes. Our thanks go to the

tireless O-Pilots, Lts Ed Toohey and Weyland Savre. Come and join us on the

next visit, April 12-13. The sign up sheet is on the notice board!

Woodvi l le FTXThe squadron deployed to Woodville, TX (Tyler County Airport) February 28,

through March 2 for a field training exercise (FTX) involving EmergencyServices training. 19 cadets accompanied by 5 senior members conducted

varied ground team training to meet the standards set in the 'Ground & UrbanDirection Finding Team Tasks' manual.

The weekend training included establishing a wilderness camp using tent orsurvival shelters for two nights.

Skills related to the safe removal or extrication of a victim from a field site to apoint of further aid were practiced and evaluated.

The use of compass navigation was also practiced as part of the victim field

extrication exercise in moving a simulated victim from the field to the airportterminal building for aid.

The weekend closed with a Basic Communication class being conducted tointroduce the cadets to the operation of communication equipment, differentaspects of communication net operations and the general dos and don'ts of

    radio usage.

The successful FTX closed as camp was struck for the weekend and a visit to

McDonalds enroute home to get some civilized food, as the cadets would say.We did have to stop and get all that red Texas mud and sand cleaned from thenew CAP van.

    Profile on Capt.Douglas

Com m ander s Corner by Capt Stephen Dicker

In our recent move into the Department of Homeland Security, several new

mandates were issued to the Civil Air Patrol. One of these mandates was toimprove the overall communications capability of CAP. Fortunately, in our first

project as a squadron, we were already addressing communications issues and

as a first step, purchased and placed a repeater in east Montgomery County(New Caney) about 700 feet in the air, providing never before provided

communications on the north side of Houston. Since the Houston repeater hasbeen failing, our repeater is now servicing the entire Houston area. Project

number two has been the securing of a 70-foot radio tower for the unit toreplace the smaller 40-foot tower and improve communications to the north.Senior Members disassembled the donated radio tower and transported it to

the U.S. Army Reserve Center last week. The Cadet Members will be in charge

of cleaning and repainting the tower before it is assembled and being put inthe air. The 70-foot height of the antenna for both the U.S. Army and CAP will

greatly assist the 7-6 Air Cavalry Composite Squadron in meeting thosemandates. Senior and Cadet Members are encouraged to obtain their Radio

Operators Authorization (ROA) cards. The 7-6 Air Cavalry CompositeSquadron will begin participating every Tuesday night in the Group 13 radionet held at 2000 hours. Personal radios can be licensed through CAP if theymeet the current radio specifications. A list of radios meeting the

specifications is located on the National website

(https://ntc.cap.af.mil/comm/equipment/wb_summary.cfm). My goal is toestablish a large radio network within our squadron and to make us the most

    communications effective squadron in CAP.

prodded. In fact I am the prod." Sir Winston Churchill

Prof i le s: Osc ar DouglasPlease join us on April 1st, 2003, to celebrate the retirement of one of the 7-6Air Cavalry Composite Squadron's aviators, who has decided to retire aftermany years of service. Capt. Oscar Douglas will be retiring as of April 1, 2003,

after many years of service as a Cadet Orientation Pilot, Safety Officer, and

Aerospace Education Officer. Oscar has been an avid Cadet Orientation Pilotwho loves to share his passion of flying with our Cadet Members.

Captain Douglas started out as a trainee Navy Pilot during World War II in the

V5 program. He instructed in the US Air Force for 4 years training pilots.

Later he joined for Pan American Airlines and flew DC-6 and 7s then the 707,720, and finally 747s on long haul routes (Africa, Atlantic, Pacific and SouthAmerican). He is a councilor for the FAA Aviation Safety Foundation lecture

meetings at the Huntsville Airport, where his Cessna 140 tail dragger is based. He first joined CAP in November 1997, attaining master level at Flight

Operations and Safety in the senior specialty tracks.

Oscar is very active in other volunteer work, as Scripture Chairman for the

Gideons, a member of his Churchs sound committee, and on his residents

association board. Oscar will be sorely missed!

In times of national crisis, emergency, or, as we find ourselves today, at War

we are compelled to pray. How should we pray? What do we say? Jesus was

once asked that question (Luke 11:1) by the apostles. Just think if the 12

apostles had to ask how to pray, it is not a silly question for us to ask. Jesus'

response is in Luke 11 and Matthew 6:5-14. Jesus said (Luke 11) to pray like

    this:

"Our Father" - acknowledge God is in control, and that He cares for us as His

children. He cares for our family and friends who may be in harm's way in the

    services.

"In heaven" - acknowledge He is greater than this sinful, broken and often

mean world in which we live. God is not weak nor is he aloof from our

struggles, but He is likewise greater than all this mess that we humans live in.

"Hallowed be your name" - God's name represents who He is and what He is

like. God is holy, pure, righteous, and trustworthy. We can reliably trust Him,

    and those we love.

"Your kingdom come" - Trust God that He is accomplishing His purposes. Trust

that the trouble, pain, sorrows that we may experience is worth the price as

God fulfills His purposes in our lives and world. Pray for our National decision

makers, the President, our Generals and commanders, and all other leaders.

Pray that they will lead and do what is right in God's eyes.

"Give us each day or daily bread" - Ask God for what you need and for the

needs of those for whom you are praying. Be specific. For ourselves, family,

and soldiers abroad pray that God would provide all that is needed.

"Forgive us our sins," - Confess your failures, oversights, wrong things you

have done. Commit yourself to do what is right next time.

"For we also forgive everyone who sin against us." - It would be silly to ask

God to forgive you if you do not forgive others. This can be tough. Jesus

commanded us not only to forgive our enemies, but love them. Forgiveness, in

a time of war can come tough, but to ask God's forgiveness requires that weforgive.

    Maintenance

Our Cessna 172P, N235TX is out from its very thorough 100 hour inspection. The crack staff at Holleys found and corrected many discrepancies, some of

which were potentially hazardous. The aircraft looks and flies great and willlook even better when the interior is refurbished later this year. It was used

extensively at last weekends SAREX. Lets all do our part to take care of this

fine airplane and help keep it in top condition. Unfortunately the Direction

Finding (DF) equipment is still not working fully.

Profess iona l Developm ent by Lt Col Bi l l Wi l l iams

It is with much pleasure that I find most seniors have chosen a specialty track.

The technician level must be reached to be promoted to 1Lt and the senior is

required for promotion to Capt. This is in addition to meeting all other

    requirements.

During the month of March, eighteen (18) senior members completed the

study and test for the Aerospace Education Program Senior Member Award

(AEPSM Yeager Award). This is a great achievement for the Squadron.

Hopefully the remaining seniors will be inspired to complete the requirements

    for this award.

It is time for the senior members to start thinking about the ECI courses for

advancement. These courses are needed for advancement in rank unless

equivalent studies were completed in the military. See your friendly

Professional Development Officer (Bill Williams) to get full details and to sign

up for the courses. During the past month 1Lt Tessitore and 2Lt Elliot have

completed the course with at least two other members waiting for study

    materials.

Congratulations to all the members who have completed new goals.

Lt Tessitore is scheduling ROA training for SMs over the next two evening

    meetings.

How do I know when my child can get his uniform, there is

no set time or day for this to be accomplished? The Cadet

Staff is implementing a new program, now that we haveenough new Cadets joining the program, which will handle

getting the new Cadets their uniforms within the first twoweeks after a paid application has been received. No

uniforms are issued until the membership fees have been received.

I am a new Senior Member. How do I complete the Cadet ProtectionPolicy Training (CPPT)? There are two videos, which cover this (the

CPPT) and the Orientation (CAP History) information. The videos can

be obtained from 2Lt Sylvia Brumlow, and once viewed the training is
