  • Aims of BlueNet

The central aim of BlueNet is to:

Provide a data management, discovery and access system that will facilitate maximal use of the collective national investment in marine science research.

The specific aims of BlueNet are to:

    • build an on-line repository for marine science data that will support current and future marine research and management

    • provide a secure archiving facility to

deliver long term curation of marine data from the Australian region

    • extend and enhance existing

infrastructure to enable universities and others to become part of the Australian Ocean Data Centre Joint Facility’s network

    • add significant value to Australia’s

higher education sector and other arenas of marine research through improving data management, discovery and access

About BlueNet Researchers at universities around Australia have spent a great deal of effort collecting information about the marine environment. However, other researchers can find it difficult to locate and access this information. This can lead to duplication of effort and a failure to consider data from all relevant sources. BlueNet was established to address the problem of marine data discovery, and management specifically within the university environment. The marine community within the Australian Government is in the process of establishing infrastructure to facilitate data sharing on the internet, and BlueNet is funded through the Backing Australia’s Ability program managed by the Department of Education, Science and Training to integrate data from the Higher Education sector into this system, and to participate in the extension of the infrastructure.

BlueNet will allow deposition of all kinds of marine data into secure, professionally managed repositories that can be accessed through a purpose-designed metadata system or a web-based portal that will allow cross dataset queries. Before an end-user has access to data they will agree to acknowledge the data creator in any resulting publication.

Benefits of BlueNet Some of the direct benefits to university researchers will be:

    • Long-term curation and management of marine datasets in secure systems

    • Inclusion of data into a searchable, Australia-wide marine web portal

    • Provision of a standard metadata entry tool that will facilitate easy discovery of the data record

    • Wider dissemination of research results and researcher profiles

    • Controlled access to the data with researcher-defined restrictions

    • Easier access to more information from a wider range of sources

    • Identification of potential collaborators

    • Access to online tools that have been developed specifically for research in the marine environment
