(APWINC) of Sookmyung Women’s University, Korea;

In the presentation, Dr. Myonghee Kim covered two major themes: 1) characteristics and impacts of the 4th industrial revolution, and 2) new possibilities of women’s economic empowerment or entrepreneurship in the era of the 4th industrial revolution.

The 4th industrial revolution is characterized by technological innovations and a convergence of new technologies, for example, Internet of Things (IoT), big data analysis, autonomous vehicles, 3D printing, artificial intelligence and accelerating automation. A close look at these characteristics reveals that information and communication technologies (ICTs) lie at the core of all these revolutionary changes.

It was indicated the main impacts on Business:

- Digital transformation in all aspects of economy (new consumption patterns)- New business models provide tailored service for individual customers andcreate new value chain (e.g. platform business (e.g., Uber, AirB&B)

- Creation of new business environments leads to lower barriers to entry into business and higher possibilities of new businesses in more diverse areas (e.g., cleaning, tourism, shopping);continuous emergence of high value-added products and services

- Pessimistic view of growing gender inequality in the workforce

- Changes in the job market

With regard to the possible impact of the 4th industrial revolution on women, there is a widespread pessimistic view that gender equality in the economic sector will be growing, particularly because many of the low-skilled, manual jobs currently taken by women are likely to be automated by machines.

Women’s economic empowerment and participation in 4th Industrial Revolution

An opposing view is the 4th industrial revolution is creating favorable environments for women’s economic activities for several reasons. First of all, in the current economy, women are becoming more important economic agents as they participate in labor force and their purchasing power is getting stronger. This change has made tremendous impacts on business strategies. For example,

companies are making efforts to identify women’s tastes, needs, and preferences, and hire more women employees. Besides, due to an increase in automated household work, women can use their time and skills in economic activities. Most importantly, ICTs, which are the driving force of the 4 th

industrial revolution, offer numerous benefits for women as enabling tools in digital economy. For example, women can start an e-commerce, which can function ‘anytime, anywhere,’ and participate in digital economy in various ways using ICT skills and knowledge.

Worth noting is that in the era of the 4th industrial revolution, creativity and soft skills are increasingly perceived as significant assets of individuals and nations, and this has created favorable social, economic conditions for women’s entrepreneurship. Women in general have unique experiences and capabilities, which can be valid, rich sources of business ideas, and, thanks to ICTs, women can become able to transform these business After discussing these, Dr. Kim gave specific examples in which women entrepreneurs around the world actively participate in digital economy with a help of ICTs.

‘Women, Climate Change and the Greening of the Economy’.Today, gender inequality is still considered one of the most pervasive threats to sustainable development; it has negative impacts on access to, use of, and control over a wide range of resources; It also affects our ability to meet human rights obligations with respect to having a clean, safe, healthy and sustainable environment.Сlimate change is not gender neutral: Gender-based inequities lead women to face more adverse climate change and disasters

impacts than men (Women and children are 14 times more likely than men to die during a disaster);

Whether environmental change is fast and acute, or slow and chronic, it has very different impacts on women and girls than on men and boys;

Women are particularly exposed to disaster risks and are likely to suffer higher rates of mortality, disease and post-disaster ruin to their livelihoods.

Women’s vulnerability to the impacts of climate change is exacerbated by:

Restricted access to information, education and basic services; Limited livelihood options; Lack of resilience and limited capacity to absorb disaster situations Discriminatory social, cultural and legal norms and practices lead to lack of resilience, in

life and in business;

Lacking the capacity and assets needed to deal with various shocks and stresses; Austerity measures and public spending cuts in recent years have intensified gender

To encourage more women to participate in economic activities in the 4th Industrial Revolution, it is necessary to provide them an access to the information and market via eco system (technological infrastructure) that should be created as electronical platform (global, regional (economy based) and local (regions inside the economy)

To helps women entrepreneurs to find each other and to get the information in business product, service, support, skills, and motivation it’s necessary to create:- the program of the new communication channels popularization;- digital literacy educational programs for girls and women;- the automated educational infrastructure in APEC

Women have relative competitiveness.in the sectors of human resource, education training. To deep and extend native competences it’s necessary to create educational programs in the field of communication, cross-cultural cooperation, presentational skills improvement etc.

Women extend their ideas and the new ones as the results of discussions between each other’s. Extending the collaboration of different unions and societies, economies associations (for example APEC and BRICS or another) will give the positive impact to women empowerment to economy.

To create an institute of champions or ambassadors on global, regional (economy based) and local (regions inside the economy) base to empower man (not depends on cultural code) and women to promote and spread APEC PPWE ideas, the best business practice.
