Why do organisms interact with each other?

• In most ecosystems, animals live with other organisms.

• They live within a group of their own kind called a population.

• They live with other groups of animals called communities.

Organisms interact in 3 ways :

1. Competition

What are the ways that organisms interact?

Page 4: Aim : How can organisms in an ecosystem interact with each other?

Competition• Competition occurs when organisms

fight over limited resources

• These resources could be:

Food and Water

Territory

Mates

2. Predation- one organism kills and eats another

Predation involves a predator (the hunter) and the prey (the hunted)

3. Symbiosis- two organisms “live together”

There are 3 Types of Symbiosis:

1) Mutualism- 2 different species that live together and both benefit from the relationship

2) Parasitism-2 different species that live together and one benefits from the relationship while harming the other

3) Commensalism-2 different species that live together and one benefit from the relationship while the other receives no benefit
