What is a doubloon?

The doubloon was a Spanish coin used from the mid 16th to the mid 19th centuries. It was stamped from gold and hence it is commonly referred to as a gold piece.

How the Doubloon got its name

The doubloon comes from the Spanish “doblon” which means to double: Thus a doubloon is a coin of double value

How doubloons were made

Spanish money was originally minted by hand. The silver and gold were melted down and then poured out into thin strips. As the metal strip cooled they were beaten to the desired thickness by hand. Then they were cut out to an approximate size. Because doubloons were made by hand no two doubloons were exactly alike.

Pirates Doubloons were carried on

Spanish galleons throughout the Caribbean and across the world to trade for highly sought after goods such as silks and spices. As they made their way across the vast seas and oceans, the captains of these ships were always on the lookout for attack from pirates.
