WAITRO RESEARCHWAITRO RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPFELLOWSHIP PROGRAMMEPROGRAMME (WRFP)(WRFP)

AIDE-MEMOIRE

1. INTRODUCTION

WAITRO Research Fellowship Programme (WRFP) is a collaboration

programme among three organisations namely, The World Association of

Industrial and Technological Research Organizations (WAITRO), The Islamic

Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ISESCO) and SIRIM

Berhad, Malaysia.

The objective of the programme is to introduce scientists and researchers in

the early stages of their careers to research opportunities abroad at well

established Centres of Excellence of WAITRO Member Organizations.

WRFP is a good platform to increase the capability of young researchers in

their chosen fields. This is in tune with the three core thrust areas under the

WAITRO Medium Term Plan 2006 – 2010, which is to undertake activities or

projects that will strengthen the capacity of Research Technology

Organizations of WAITRO members.

2. FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME DETAILS

The short term research fellowship programme is a capability-building

programme for young scientists and researchers who are currently working in

research institutes and universities from regions such as the Asia-Pacific,

Middle East and Africa. Besides gaining some experiences, knowledge and

information on current development of technology and science, participants

will have the opportunity to network and collaborate with other scientists

working in their respective fields.

The duration of the fellowship is for one month (4 weeks) and will be based in

the Ceramics Technology Group (CTG), Advanced Materials Research

Centre (AMREC), SIRIM Berhad. CTG is actively involved in research and

development, providing industrial training, technical evaluation and

consultancy services in both clay and non-clay based ceramics technology.

2

Among CTG’s scope of activities are research & development on ceramics

technology, technical services on materials evaluation and consultancy,

industrial training and entrepreneur development programmes, incubator

programmes and ceramic technology transfer.

SIRIM Berhad is a wholly owned company of the Malaysian Government

under the Minister of Finance Incorporated. It was fully operational as a

corporate entity in September 1996 with the vision to be among the world’s

best in quality and technology. It has been the leading organization in

industrial research development, fulfilling the industry needs by blending new

innovations with quality and standards.

3. OBJECTIVE OF PROGRAMME

The objectives of the programme are: -

i. To provide the understanding on methods and process interactions

involved in ceramic processing.

ii. To give opportunity to trainees on hands-on operations in processing

ceramic materials, basic materials selection and processing conditions.

iii. To increase technical knowledge in order for the trainees to carry-out

product quality check.

iv. To provide trainees a good understanding of ceramic process control

towards a successful production of ceramic products.

v. To provide intensive technical training to the trainees to ensure they

can develop ceramics products once they are back in their respective

countries.

3

4. SCOPE OF THE PROGRAM

The Fellowship Program in the field of Ceramics Processing Technology will be carried out at the Ceramics Technology Group (CTG), SIRIM Berhad

from November 1 – 30, 2010.

The Ceramics Training Programme will focus on the ceramic processing

technology, controls of ceramic processing and products quality. The

programme will involve training modules consisting both theoretical and

practical classes on ceramics processing. The eight modules of classes

provided for the participants will include raw materials preparation, ceramic

fabrication using extruder, roller-head and powder press machines, model and

mould making, fabrication through slip casting technique, drying and firing,

glazing and decoration. The materials to be used for the training will be

based on stoneware.

5. CRITERIA FOR PARTICIPATION

The criteria for acceptance of participants for all the training modules of the

project are as follows: -

a) General

Participation is only open to WAITRO and ISESCO member organizations.

b) For the Participants

The candidate must have a combination of qualifying high school

education and minimum working experience of three years. The

person should preferably have technical or scientific background in the

areas of chemistry, mathematics or physics. Candidates having artistic

or designing skills have added advantage to be offered fellowship

sponsorship.

4

6. PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The training programme will comprise of both theoretical and practical classes

on processing techniques from raw materials processing stage until the

product fabrication, firing, glazing, product evaluation, inspection and safety

practices.

Ceramic fabrication will be based on slip casting, plastic forming and powder

pressing methods for stoneware bodies. The training will be carried out in 9

modules for 20 man-days. Laboratory or practical work and demonstration

classes involving a wide range of ceramic processing methods will be

conducted to develop strong understanding of the relationships between raw

materials, processing methods, product properties and its control measures.

The proposed modules for the training programme are:
