Bar Code OverviewWhat is a Bar Code?A bar code is a graphical representation of alpha and/or numeric information. A bar code can be compared to a ‘word’ that is easy for a machine to read. This ‘word’ can be written in different ‘fonts’ or bar code symbologies. Some of these symbologies offer low space requirements and large character sets which minimize error incidence. All you need is to choose the ‘font’ or bar code symbology that best suits your specific application needs.One-dimensional (1D)1D bar codes, usually called ‘linear bar codes’ typically store one set of 10 to 20 characters of alphanumeric information in a external source. A 1D bar code can be compared to a ‘license plate.’ The license plate travels with the car, but the data on who is the owner, etc. is stored elsewhere. The most common linear bar codes include Code 39, UPC, Code 128 and interleaved 2 of 5.

Why Bar Code?Increases profit margins and revenueImproves labour, inventory and time management

Key Components of a Typical Bar Code System:

Design – Design your own custom labels using label design software. Include text, bar codes or graphics in your design. You can access data from your existing databases.

Print – Print bar codes from laser, dot matrix or thermal printers. Bar codes can be printed onto labels, tags, forms or cards.

Read – Read bar codes using an input device such as a wand, CCD, laser scanner or card reader. The scanned bar code is ‘decoded’ and appears on the screen as though you typed it.

Collect – Collect data away from your computer with a portable data collector.

HP USB Barcode ScannerUsed in conjunction with HP Point of Sale Systems, the HP USB Bar Code Reader is a small, lightweight hand-held scanner, which scans industry-standard bar codes for fast and easy input of retail information.P/N: EY022AT

Did you knowA well-trained data entry operator will usually make a data entry error once every 300 keystrokes (1 in 300). According to a study by Ohio University the worst case scenario for a bar code scanner is one in three hundred ninety four thousand (1 in 394,000).

Bar Code ScannersA Bar Code Scanner scans and translates bar codes into ASCII text (human readable). May be referred to as wands, hand-helds, projection / vertical or in-counter scanners.Bar Code Scanner Items to Consider:

◊ Single Line or Omni-Directional ◊ Bar codes on flat or curved surfaces ◊ Scanning environment (convenience store, gift shop, warehouse, retail, grocery, etc.) ◊ Durability (environmental requirements, drop test, etc.) ◊ Scanning range (distance, width, etc.) ◊ Hands-free operation ◊ Decoded or non-decoded scanner output ◊ Scanner Interface (keyboard wedge, RS-232, etc.) ◊ Quality and density of bar codes to be scanned ◊ Symbologies to be scanned ◊ Application software to be used (PC or UNIX, etc.)

Printers – Bar CodeA Bar Code Label Printer is specifically designed to print bar codes, text, and graphics on rolls or fanfold stacks of labels or tags made from a variety of materials ranging from paper to polyester. These printers come in print widths of 2, 4, 6 or 8 inches wide, with 4” wide being the most common. Print speeds are quoted in “inches per second” and range from 4 ips to 12 ips. (A laser printer at 20 ppm (pages per minute) calculates out to 3.66 ips.) Today’s bar code printers produce all the popular 1D (i.e.UPC, Code 39, Code 128) and 2D (i.e. PDF417, DataMatrix) bar codes. The main advantage, unlike a laser or ink jet printer, is that a bar code label printer can print one label at a time “on demand”.Bar code label printers use two types of thermal technology: direct thermal and thermal transfer. Most thermal transfer printers can be used in direct thermal mode as well.

Direct thermal labels cost more than thermal transfer labels, but do not require ribbons – an additional factor that must be calculated into your consumables costs. Direct thermal labels offer the user a simpler printing experience – there are no ribbons to load into the printer. The disadvantage of direct thermal is the labels are in direct contact with the print head which tends to wear out the head faster (print heads are a consumable item which must be replaced periodically). Thermal transfer ribbons provide the printhead more protection from wear and tear.

CL-S700The CL-S700 series is built with durability and ease of access in mind. Featuring a large, programmable front LCD control panel and a revolutionary Cross-Emulation control board, the CL-S700 is designed for years of service.

Printronix T4MThe T4M industrial and commercial thermal bar code printer delivers reliability and dependable performance with its rugged metal design. Can be installed seamlessly into other printer brand environments. Comes standard with Remote Printer Management and is upgradeable to RFID.

P/N: TT4M2-0100-00

B-SX4TIncorporating the most advanced thermal head technology in the industry, the B-SX4 delivers long head life that triples the longevity of conventional flathead technologies. The B-SX4 and B-SX5 combine ease of use with a very low total cost of ownership making them the ideal choice of flexible industrial printers.

P/N: B-SX4T-GS20-QM-R

Did you knowThermal transfer printers, over time, can accumulate a “baked on” layer of material on their print heads. This material can cause printed images, including bar codes and graphics, to appear “ghosted” or smudged. Instead of replacing print heads, sometimes a quick “sanding” with a specialized film solves the problem.

Page 21: AIDC Technologies - SYNNEX Corporation

Printers – Bar CodeThe key to selecting which type of printer to use depends on the label application. Direct thermal labels, since they use a heat sensitive label stock, degrade if exposed to further heat / sunlight / UV rays. If the label has a short life span – shipping labels, bakery product labels, food labels – direct thermal is the way to go.Product identification labels, hang tags for clothing, asset labels, labels to be used outdoors – all these require a thermal transfer label because of its long lasting images and resistance to such environmental factors.Items to consider before selecting a bar code and label printer:

◊ What is the label application? ◊ Is the label going to be used indoors or outdoors? ◊ What size is the label? ◊ How many labels are going to be printed a day / week / month? ◊ Where will the printer be located? Office / Warehouse / Retail Store / Hospital

Software – POS, Barcode & AssetPOS Software can create a retail management system which integrates traditional sales transactions with accounting and financial planning information. As well as typical cash register functions, integration of cash drawers, receipt printers and scanners, POS software can also provide business tools to track inventory and accounts.POS Software Items to Consider:

Assets are “permanent” objects that a business uses internally, such as computers, tools, or educational material. Although employees may check the object in or out to go out on an assignment, or even use at home, an asset ultimately belongs to the company and must be returned to the company. Keeping track of these items can be very laborious and difficult to do. The use of asset tracking software protects a company’s investment and enables them to determine what they have with a minimal amount of effort.

Bar Code and Label Design Software assists users in the design and printing of their labels. Using an intuitive WYSIWYG graphical interface, there is no need to learn the proprietary language of the bar code label printer to produce labels containing bar codes, text and graphics. With today’s labeling software packages, user’s can quickly design bar code, compliance or RFID labels. There are software packages that offer wizards that walk the user through the design and print process, while others are targeted for the IT department and come with advanced features such as ActiveX and OLE Automation capability and multi-language support.

Questions to ask before selecting a bar code and label design software package: ◊ How often will the user be designing bar code labels? ◊ Who will be using the software? ◊ When printing, where will the date be coming from? ◊ What operating system is being used?

◊ Is integration with accounting and inventory needed? ◊ End-of-day sales reports ◊ Cash drawer reconciliation

◊ Are estimates or bids being used ◊ Operating system

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a flexible technology that is convenient, easy to use and well-suited for automatic operation. It combines advantages not available with other identification technologies. RFID can be supplied as read-only or read / write, does not require contact or line-of-sight to operate, can function under a variety of environmental conditions and provides a high level of data integrity. In addition, because the technology is difficult to counterfeit, RFID provides a high level of security.RFID is similar in concept to bar coding. Bar code systems use a reader and coded labels that are attached to an item, whereas RFID uses a reader and special RFID devices that are attached to an item. Bar code uses optical signals to transfer information from the label to the reader; RFID uses RF signals to transfer information from the RFID device to the reader.Radio waves transmit data between an item to which an RFID device is attached and an RFID reader. The device can contain data about the item, such as what the item is, what time the device traveled through a certain zone, perhaps even a parameter such as temperature. RFID devices, such as a tag or label, can be attached to virtually anything—from a vehicle to a pallet of merchandise.

B-SX Series RFID PrintersTo take the risk out of buying printers that have pre-fitted proprietary RFID read write units, the B-SX series printers can be fitted with modules from some of the best known names in the RFID field. For the user the B-SX series takes the mystery out of RFID by treating the addition of encoding as just another barcode.

RFIDRF technology is used in many different applications, such as television, radio, cellular phones, radar, and automatic identification systems. The term RFID (radio frequency identification) describes the use of radio frequency signals to provide automatic identification of items. Radio waves are classified by their frequencies, which are expressed in kilohertz, megahertz, or gigahertz and are usually LF, HF and UHF. RFID is used in applications such as:

◊ Electronic toll collection (ETC) ◊ Railway car identification and tracking ◊ Intermodal container identification ◊ Asset identification and tracking ◊ Item management for retail, health care, and logistics applications ◊ Access control ◊ Animal identification and more!
