Barak Hussein ObamaBy Ahmed Hussain
Introductiono The first African American to be
elected President of the United States.
o Barack Obama elected 44th President of the United States
o Extraordinary because it was only 40-50 years ago when Martin Luther King was campaigning for black rights.
o This shows a change of racial views in modern America.
Oppositiono He was up against Republican
Candidate John McCain and his running mate Sarah Palin.
o People at first did say he was going to have a tough time due to his race but he managed to turn his weakness into a strength.
o Other issues surrounding him was his age. He was much younger than McCain but people also said McCain was too old to bring new ideas into the White House.
The Raceo Obama received 52.75% of the
votes and this meant he won by a wide margin.
o To win he had to gain a minimum of 270 electoral votes which is half.
o He managed to do this with relative ease.
Prejudiceso Many were first worried about
the fact that people in America had not yet reached a stage where racial prejudices will have no effect on their judgement of people.
o Due to this fact many people very early on counted Barack Hussein Obama out of the race.
o They said he would only get the black vote.
The Factso He managed to get 97% of the
black voters on his side.o 57% of white voters also voted
for him.o 47% of elderly white voters
however voted for McCain.o This suggest that America
hasn’t completely gotten rid of all its’ prejudices but the youth do show that America might have a bright future.
