Going….going….almost gone!! Summer, that is. It seems as though we have been in a constant state of anticipation, waiting for the summer to arrive and now I hate to have to tell you that it’s fast disappearing.This should be your wake-up call to get into your Healey and drive somewhere… anywhere! Here are some of the places members have been taking their cars so far this year.Conclave is behind us and a great time was had by all who attended from AHCSO. The wine tour, ably planned and hosted by Ed & Anna, is in the books for another year and a great weekend in Bobcaygeon was had by those that made the trip. A big thank you is owed to Gary & Marie for organising that weekend. Coming up is a BBQ in Tottenham at the home of David & Marilyn, followed the next day by the Port Perry British Car Day and hot on the heels of this is the salmon BBQ hosted again by the Wilfords. Hopefully Laurie catches enough salmon for everybody, otherwise it will be tube steaks all round!By the time these events are done, so will August be. So you can see you don’t have a lot of time to waste. I have been in Canada for 46 years and every year, except two, we have been treated to snow in October. So don’t wait any longer…..

I would just like to take a moment and ask you to give a thought to Bob & Jean Slater. Bob is not very well and I am sure an e-mail to Jean would be appreciated by them both.

As I can only speak for ourselves, even with this very odd summer weather we have been experiencing, we still managed to get a fair bit of ‘Healey driving’ in! Our trip to Conclave this year was ‘memorable’ to say the least – the host location – the beautiful mountains of Virginia was truly thrilling – I especially loved the Inglis Airport – whose elevation was surprising – where Gymkhana, Funkhana, & Speed runs, were held, was the perfect place to see how fast your LBC can actually go! PS: Our ‘Misty Blue’ was not ‘up’ for racing that day and had a comparatively poor showing!, however quite a few of our members did very well here. Wow! who would have guessed that Len Thomas was a ‘speed demon’!! Anyway just one of the terrific events we have attended this summer. We still have two more August events and at least one in September – and maybe we can squeeze in acouple more if the weather co-operates. Maybe our Events Co-ordinator can put together a “Run for the Leaves” in late September – we will keep our fingers crossed.

BritS iN the Park - LiNDSaY, ONtariOAn early morning drive to Bobcaygeon (yikes! I hate that traffic across the top of Toronto!) got the Orrs and the Wilfords to Gary and Mary Stokx beautiful home in Bobcaygeon on Saturday, July 19th., just in time to meet the rest of our Healey budds and enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by Gary and Marie. We then left for a drive to Sturgeon Point – a most beautiful summer home community on the water. After making our way back to Bobcaygeon – just in time for ‘Happy Hour’ at the motel, we were whisked off to “Just for the Halibut” in Bobcaygeon for dinner! Next morning we all drove to just outside Lindsay and enjoyed a great breakfast and then headed into town for the most enjoyable “Brits In the Park”.

“HUGE THANKS” to Gary and Marie for hosting a great week end!! P.S. AHCSO also brought home 2 trophies – Blue car went to Jim Phythian and Red car went to Heather Doust.

‘WiNe tOur aND POt Luck SuPPer’ SaturDaY, JuLY 26. 2014 – hOSteD BY the Orr’SAlthough the weather forecast was pretty gloomy for Saturday, July 26th for our Annual Wine Tour – we gathered at the Orr House in Winona under sunny skies and headed off for our 1st. stop – “Mike Weir Winery” in Beamsville. Had a delicious and interesting tasting in the vineyard by employee “Grayson” – a dynamic and very knowledgable young man – then off to our 2nd. stop – in Jordan – which was not a wonderful experience however our 3rd stop at Stoney Ridge Estate Winery in Vineland was a very pleasant visit and also enjoyed their in-house Cheese Shop. A sudden shower made us dash for our cars to drive back to the Orr Ranch and by the time we got there the sun was shining!! Everyone seemed to enjoy our delicious Pot Luck supper in our backyard – those ‘Healey Gals’ are so good at Pot Luck get-togethers. All in all a wonderful day with just the best cars and the best folks! AHCSO you rock!!

1910 FOrD & StatiSticSThe year is 1910, over one hundred years ago.

What a difference a century makes!

Here are some statistics for the Year 1910: (applies to the USA)

The average life expectancy for men was 47 years.

Fuel for this car was sold in drug stores only.

Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.

Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.

There were only 8,000 cars andonly 144 miles of paved roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower !

The average US wage in 1910 was 22 cents per hour.

The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year.

A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year,

A dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year,

And a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME.

Ninety percent of all Doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION!

Instead, they attended so-called medical schools,

Many of which were condemned in the press AND the government as ‘substandard.’

Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help.

There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A. !(yes, people have changed)

UPDATE ON FELLOW HEALEY MEMBER BOB SLATER WHO IS FIGHTING A SERIOUS HEALTH ISSUE

I have been in touch with Jean Slater, Bob’s wife andshe has given me the following updates on Bob’s conditiion.

Bob is presently in Kitchener/Waterloo Hospital undergoing treatment for cancerand is hoping to be able to return home once his condition stabilizes.

We all join together in sending our very best wishes to Bob and his family andhope that in the very near future he will be well enough to be able to come home to recuperate. Jean said she will keep us informed of his progress and hopefully we will see them both soon.

ROCKTON BRITISH FLEA MARKET - SUNDAY OCTOBER 19th Upcoming 3rd Annual British Flea Market is to be held once again

at the Rockton Fairgrounds at 812 Old Hwy 8 in Rockton on Sun Oct 19 2014. Vendors can get in for set up @ 7:00 AM and open to the Spectators @ 9:00 AM.

Admission price is $5 for either a vendor or spectator and the tables are still only $15 each. Outdoor vending is permitted with a 20X20 spot for $20.

This year we have set aside 10 tables for any registered club to use at no charge to the club. These will be issued on a first come first serve basis.

The annual BC salmon fishing trip this year is August 19 to 23. Please join Diane and I on Saturday, August 30th for a Healey tour and Pot Luck Salmon BBQ.

If you are able to join us, please RSVP (healey3000@sympatico.ca) or call Diane at 519-624-0861 by Wednesday, August 27th latest so we can prepare. If I don’t catch salmon, it will be burgers and sausages on the barbie! The pool will be heated to 85 so bring your suits if the weather is nice. Kids are welcome in the pool as long as an adult is responsible for them.

This will again be a pot luck dinner with the club supplying small amounts of beer and wine. Please let us know whether you will be bringing an appetizer, salad, or desert.

We are preparing a two hour country tour before the BBQ. We will let you know the details at Tim Hortons. This will leave from Tim Hortons on Market Drive in Milton (just off Hwy 25 South of 401). We will start cars just after 2:00 and should end up at our place before 5:00.

If you are unable to join us for the drive, please come directly to our house for dinner. Our address is 11 Lee Court, Cambridge. 519-624-0861.

From 401 Westbound exit at Townline Road South. Stay in the right lane and take the first exit on the roundabout to Canamera Parkway. Take Canamera for about 3 kilometers, then turn left (South) at Franklin Boulevard for about 1 kilometer, then turn left on Avenue Road. Turn Right at the first street (Beasley) and then Right to 11 Lee Court.

From Eastbound 401 exit on Franklin Blvd. and go South to Avenue Road, turn left on Avenue, right on Beasley, and right on Lee Court.

This year Hagerty Insurance has donated a trophy and ballots for a “People’s Choice” award. Only Healeys will be eligible, so make sure to bring your Healey! The only rules are: one vote per person attending and you are not allowed to vote for your own car! The trophy will be awarded just before dinner.
